About

My bike shapeshift project

I want to create simple human powered machines that can provide enough energy to power a cellphone. This can be used in wilderness settings, rolling blackout urban settings or disaster settings. The shapeshift format of using recycled items was uncanny timing because I was already brainstorming the idea of trying to obtain and use recycled bikes to easily harness human power for these simple machines.

My plan

I have the first bike I will butcher already lined up, it is shown in the picture of my project.

My plan is to sketch a couple potential designs and consider what parts I can salvage at a local salvage yard and what parts will need to be purchased new. Once I decide on an electric motor to generate the energy I will need to draw up the plans for how the mount (that will replace the back wheel while stabilizing the bike frame) and the axle shaft of the generator will connect to the existing bike structure.

I plan to have more projects after this based around similar concepts. I will attempt to find local businesses and institutions willing to collect old bike donations once a year so more people can easily participate. A makerspace to facilitate these meetups is a long term goal.

Rewards

Maybe you would like to build a simple machine out of a bike too, or see the many paths this project might have taken as it happens? My goal here is to instruct as I am creating and I will try to upload videos of my progress frequently. Even if you don't want to do this project yourself you may want to watch my videos to gather more of an idea of what is involved if you need to manually generate electric power some day.

Risks and challenges

I don't know much about the kickstarter community, my greatest challenge will be promoting this project online and in person.

Environmental commitments

Visit our Environmental Resources Center to learn how Kickstarter encourages sustainable practices.

Long-lasting design

My design will consist of mostly weatherproof parts and will be tested both indoors and outdoors.

Reusability and recyclability

Completed simple machines are intended for donation to those in need or disater recovery efforts.

Sustainable materials

The unused old bikes are being upcycled into human powered electricity generators.

Environmentally friendly factories

I will choose salvage yards and parts providers who pledge their dedication to environmentally aware practices.

Sustainable fulfillment and distribution

These are large objects, scouting the right placement and shipping them will be a major percentage of the budget.

Something else

I am looking into grants that would mutually benefit this project and people who are interested in working on similarly mentally stimulating, hands-on construction projects.
