About this project
As an avid gamer you undoubtedly have many favorite games featuring a diverse and colorful range of favorite gaming characters. Perhaps you have spent years customizing your game character to perfection through upgrades, in-app purchases, or by spending countless hours solving puzzles and quests. Or perhaps you just have a few favorite games that features cool looking character art that would look great as figurines on your desk, but none are available for purchase anywhere…
Shapeit is a small specialized company currently developing a unique in-game API for game developers, through which gamers can select, customize, order, and manufacture real-life 3D printed figurines from the comfort of their chair!
This crowdfunding campaign aims to provide the necessary funding for the completion of our work, and as a bonus for supporting our campaign, you have the unique and exclusive opportunity to get a cool custom figurine made from your favorite gaming character, own sketch, or a selfie! Pledge now to get a glorious one-of-a-kind figurine shipped directly to your door!
The process of building your own custom figurine could be summarized into three easy steps:
- Step 1: Take and Send screen captures of your character
- Step 2: We turn screen captures into 3D model
- Step 3: We 3D print your gaming figurine
WILL THE FIGURINE I ORDER MATCH MY GAME CHARACTER 100%?
It will be close, but not exactly the same. Please remember that to create the figurines, there are several stages that our artists and machines must complete to translate game data to a physical model. We transform in-game screen captures into a physical representation of the character.
This interpretation includes increasing the resolution, identifying and thickening certain aspects of each model that are too thin to print, brightening the colors, and sharpening small details to enhance your statue.
During the final pass our artists may tweak the angle and position of some parts to make a stronger and more aesthetically pleasing final figurine. They may also need to add additional support elements to make sure that the print is stable. Be aware, that all figurines are hollow, so there will be some little escape holes usually at the bottom.
WHAT ARE THE SIZES OF THE FIGURINES?
We are offering figurines in three sizes: 4" (10cm Large), 2.75" (7cm Medium), and 1.5" (4cm Small).
The large figurines come in full-color whereas the smaller ones are in one color of your choice or entirely plain, which is great for paintjobs.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE THE FIGURINES MADE OF?
The large figurines are built out of a gypsum-based powder (Fullcolor Sandstone) with Z-Corp printers. The smaller sizes are made out of high-quality plastic, ideal for hand paint and very durable.
Check out the finished 3D print of the Beast. We've joined hands with The Object Shop to ensure all our reward figurines come out as perfect as possible, and definitely best in class.
And 360 degree view ...
CAN I USE THESE ON A BOARD GAME?
Yes, of course! You are only limited by your imagination. The smaller figurines are especially well suited for board gaming. The larger full-color figures can be used as props.
CAN I USE OWN SKETCH OR A SELFIE?
Yes, you can!
We have created two Rewards for backers who are looking to turn their own sketch or selfie shots into a large full-color figurine! Pick either Selfie or Custom Sketch pledge from the Reward list on the top right of this page. The base pledge covers a SINGLE large full-color figurine. For additional prints of the same figurine, simply add $40 to your pledge for each.
WHAT'S IN THE COST?
Most of the cost is tied to manually turning your in-game or sketch art into a 3D print ready model. This is why rewards with more than one figurine cost less per item.
Remember, this project is all hand-made stuff. You get a figurine made after your own personalized in-game character or art that you cannot get anywhere else, not even at your local Hobby Store :)
We've spent considerable time analyzing the cost of production at every step to make sure we come up with the pledge amounts that we can afford to work with and at the same time give our backers exclusive, one-of-a-kind rewards at the lowest price possible.
For this Kickstarter, all models are crafted by hand. It's painstaking and tedious process but it's all worth it in the end.
First, we take the artwork submitted by our backers and build 3D model as close to the original as possible.
We've uploaded our model to SketchFab (http://bit.ly/shapeit-model) so that you may look at it from each every angle you want :)
Once everyone, most importantly the backer, is satisfied with the model, we set out to optimize it for use in a 3D printer. We use specialized software to identify specific problem areas on the base model:
The process involves making sure there are no holes in the model, excess volume, or thin walls that may compromise the structure.
The actual print process takes 2-3 hours to complete. Figures are then sent to The Object Shop where they optimize location in the print using special software so that many models can be made in a single print, allowing us to get them to you as soon as possible.
Finished prints are extracted from the printer, de-powdered, dipped in an infiltrant to bring out the colors and then treated to a bath in a special type of wax which will seal and brighten the colors..
Optionally for backers who chose the “Showroom Finish” add-on, we will spend the time it will take meticulously smoothing, polishing, and detailing every square millimeter of the figurine to give it truly exceptional appearance and texture.
On the right-hand side of this page we have listed reward options suitable to fulfill almost any need and budget. We have rewards specific to 2D games with simpler graphics and therefore lower price tag as well as for more complex 3D games. But not to worry because in both cases we can build fine looking 3D printed figurines you'll be proud of!
Before we can determine if your favorite gaming character can be brought to life, we need to learn about your character, artwork and requirements. For this reason we will need you to provide a series of screenshots or images representing what you wish as a figurine. The more screenshots you can provide the better as they help us determine the degree of complexity, which has an impact on delivery estimates.
Next we will evaluate your choice of game characters to ensure they don’t infringe on existing intellectual property or trademarks, and more importantly, has the required quality and prerequisites to become a great real-life product.
Now the process of turning screenshots into genuine 3D-Model required for the process to work begins. This prototyping process involves a combination of 3D modeling, rapid prototyping, and even hand sculpting to some degree. We may involve you at this stage to seek your approval and blessing, and once the model is approved by you, we can schedule it for print as a 3D figurine.
And finally, when everything is ready for production we manufacture your figurine based on your choice of reward for this campaign, and deliver your one-of-a-kind figurine directly to your door.
As enthusiastic gamers we have a desire to bring our virtual characters into the real world. To proudly display a grand achievement on our work desk, or pit them against adversaries in a tabletop game.
About a year ago, we started our business and came up with an idea that seemed brutally simple: bring the power of 3D printing to the gaming world. We wanted to build technology that would allow a gaming enthusiast like you to transform their virtual character or other in-game item that they’d worked so hard to nurture, develop, and fall in love with into reality. A real 3D printed figurine in full color and incredible fine detail.
Today, we have made significant headway towards that goal. We are in the final stages of development and testing of our core 3D print technology as a service toolkit. The base API we are developing will empower game developers of all sizes to quickly and cost-effectively deploy this service in their existing and future titles.
Shapeit today is a small but growing company based in Vancouver, BC and Portland, WA. We are a talented team of passionate developers and 3D-designers with many decades of combined experience in the field of enterprise software development, marketing and sales.
For 3D print manufacturing, we've teamed up with our friends at The Object Shop, a small start-up located right outside of Tampa, FL. Here is some information straight from The Object Shop regarding their awesome full color Z Corporation Zprinter 650:
The Z Corp machine produces detail objects by incrementally layering and bonding successive cross-sections of a fine powder. Accuracy for full color objects is very good at 600 x 540 dpi with layers as thin as .0035" or .089 mm (the typical thickness of a sheet of paper).
Once the object has finished printing it is de-powdered and infiltrated to have a sandstone finish. For this kickstarter we are applying a special finish that will bring out even more depth to the color of these models along with removing any trace smell of the infiltrant which is cyanoacrylate based (Super Glue).
This finish will make the pieces more resistant to UV and water, but they are still not approved for fish tanks or submersion. This extra step is made completely possible because both The Object Shop and ShapeIt are smaller companies and we are working together to bring the highest quality models directly to you all, the backers!
The printer relies on color jet modeling which spreads layers of powder near the thickness of a human hair (89 microns) and every layer it also applies a binder material through inkjets much like a standard printer.
Layer by layer powder and binder is spread and applied until the print is finished.
After a drying time the models are carefully excavated from the print, all unused powder is recycled, and once the piece has been fully de-powdered it takes a quick dip in a super glue based infiltrant to not only strengthen the model but to bring out the true vibrancy of the color.
Once the model has dried it undergoes a finishing process custom made for this Kickstarter to ensure the best quality and clarity of these pieces.
What we’re looking for now are backers to support our project. This could be by sharing our page on social media, telling your friends about it, or by selling your house and giving us all your money.. kidding of course :P
Our goal is $50,000, and every penny helps. We’re only a small start-up, and every penny that we get can go a long way to help us achieve the ultimate goal of bringing in-game 3D print to every gamer a reality!
We will use a large part of the funds raised through this campaign to work together with our designer and 3D print teams to create 3D models based on the artwork we receive from you (in-game, sketch, or selfie).
We have already successfully manufactured a number of prototype figurines as showcased on this campaign page capturing a wide range of design complexities, and we are ready to kick it in high gear as soon as we successfully complete our campaign.
While we are working hard to process your rewards, we will direct remaining portion of the funds towards developing the necessary in-house capability, software and hardware, to deliver on our strategic goals. We want to complete the API that would allow us to better integrate with game developers and set up the necessary infrastructure to provide smooth end-to-end character print experience for the gamers, along with the great savings!
Before kicking off this campaign, we wanted to ensure we could make good on our promises. So we started early – we designed, developed and produced a number of prototype figurines that we released to a select group of QA testers and friends.
We continued the cycle until everyone was satisfied. Shortly thereafter, we’ve analyzed and sourced a dozen 3D print providers, completed product assembly and order fulfillment ourselves, and pulled off operations for our early supporters.
If you join us with a pledge, we’ll be able to go the last mile and beyond! The road from the start has been an adventure, and we’re ready for larger volumes and new expansions. Our team is assembled, the technology is tried and tested -- all we need is you. We hope we can get the personalized gaming figure you've been wanting for so long into your hands, finally!
We've got a bunch of cool rewards over on the (top) right to express our thanks to you for helping us fund this project!
We can turn your in-game character screenshots, own artwork such as sketches and drawings, or even selfie shots into awesome figurines.
Go ahead and indulge!
