Shannon Gilbert | 'Here to There' at Contemporary Artist Center Woodside
I have been awarded a fellowship and residency for 1 month at the CAC Woodside in Troy, New York beginning in February 2014! While in residence, I am afforded the time and focus to create a cohesive body of work that will allow me to further my artistic practice.
Here is a summary of my statement of intent:
In my recent work, I am exploring the anxiety and tension born out of conflict between mankind, nature, technology, and our perception of reality and history in the information age.... My intention is to give the viewer a sense of déjà vu, and turmoil over how to reconcile the bizarre relationships... The deliberately ambiguous meaning is revealed within the juxtaposition of symbols, patterns, textures and colors and the interventions upon them.
The location of CAC Woodside is of particular interest to me, because of similarities to my home base of Richmond, Virginia. Geographically, Troy is adjacent to the Hudson, Richmond is on the James and historically both areas were settled by Europeans and both areas experienced a devastating fire in the 1860’s... I intend to create a new body of work which draws from these parallels.
In an effort to form a deeper connection with Troy, I will be prepared to offer several workshops to the community: A monotype print workshop,, as well as a collage workshop that allows interactive interventions to create a thread of commonality between works. Finally, I hope to initiate an artists’ postcard exchange... This type of exchange fosters cross pollination of ideas and can lead to collaboration and unabashed camaraderie among participants. The goal will be to nurture a creative exchange, culminating in two exhibitions, one in New York and one in Virginia where the ideas from these exchanges can be explored.
That was a mouthful!!!
What will I do with your money? Why am I on Kickstarter?
- Residency Fees $525 (after fellowship award)
- Travel Expenses from Virginia to New York $200
- Supplies $475
I have tried to be conservative. Any additional money raised will go towards photographic documentation, prints, framing, exhibition expenses, and the loss of pay while I am away from my job as museum guard at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
I love art. I work in an art museum, I am surrounded by artists, I have a very dusty studio in Richmond I share with 2 bands (as you can imagine that is why I need time and space to create!). I am extremely lucky to be awarded a fellowship and residency as an emerging artist.
In appreciation for your generosity, you will receive some nifty things like:

Risks and challenges
I will be traveling to New York in February. If there is a blizzard with 6 feet of snow, that might impede my ability to get to Troy, or get home from Troy. In the event that this happens, I will still be trapped somewhere making art for you.
I am a painter/printmaker and I am right-handed. My right hand is in good working order as of today. I won't be going skiing, but I have been known to slip on ice. I will bring along a bag of kitty litter so that I don't break anything if it's icy.
Kickstarter is ALL or NOTHING. The true cost of my supplies, travel and time off work are close to $3,000. I can achieve all the goals of the residency, and fulfil my rewards with the minimum goal of $1200, but there is a risk that I will be eating nothing but Ramen Noodles for next 6 months.
