I am making a fully produced EP, 5 additional bonus singles (hopefully even more), and my first professional music video!
I'm Shanna in a Dress, aka Shanna Hoar, aka your quirky bff who refuses to wear pants, and I'm a folk-pop songwriter in Boulder, Colorado. Think Jason Mraz meets Regina Spektor meets Phoebe Buffay. People have told me my songs are fun, clever, honest, relatable, funny, moving, thoughtful, witty, and "SO TRUE." My songwriter life began when I was a freshman at the University of Virginia secretly writing songs in my dorm room and singing silly songs at skit night during band camp, and now I'm a private music teacher, host of the monthly show Women in Song, and performing roughly 100 shows a year.
My main three tenets for myself are: have fun, include others, and always keep growing. In order to keep growing, I can't put off recording my songs any longer. I have 114 performable songs, and beyond the people who hear them when I sing them live, they have no way of living in the world, on radio, in film and tv, or so that other people can sing them. I've been scared to take the expensive plunge into choosing the right songs and flushing out the details of them so they are record-ready, but I can't let that stop me any more. So I’m putting myself out there and asking for your help.
Justina Shandler is a talented musician and songwriter, and my very good friend, and will be producing the EP! She is an adjunct songwriting professor at the University of Miami with a masters degree in media writing and production, and I trust my songs fully with her ear and taste.
In addition to the EP, I will be working with several different musicians to each produce a digital single, including Kyle Donovan, Sawyer Bernath of Copper Leaf, Mike Trimble, Megan Burtt, Dan and Carolyn Hunter of the Heartstring Hunters, and Mark Venezia at Wind Over the Earth studio.
Peter Garland of Brave Knight Media will lead a team in creating a beautiful high-quality music video for me, and I will finally have songs recorded to choose from for a video!
Every dollar raised for this campaign will go directly towards the creation of the EP, the 5 bonus digital singles, a professional music video, and to compensate those who contributed their time, talents, and resources. Here’s a general breakdown of the budget:
Pre-production: rehearsals and arrangement sessions with producers, recording demo tracks, studio rental hours: $2,000
Production: paying audio engineer, producer, and studio musicians; recording, tracking, production for a minimum of 10 tracks: $5,000
Post-Production: hours of overdubs, re-tracking, mixing, mastering; production of actual CDs, digital distribution of the EP (getting it on Spotify, iTunes, etc.), registering ISRC codes for songs and full EP, United States Copyright fees: $3,000
Promotion: Graphic designer fees (logo design + album art), publicist for wider outreach, radio promotion, print promotion, and photos: $1,500
Fulfillment Fees: Any supplies needed to create and ship rewards, postage (Ordering and shipping physical copies of the CDs, dresses, ukulele, guitar, etc): $1000
Kickstarter/Amazon Fees/Taxes: Kickstarter and Amazon collect nearly 10% of your successful funding goal, and Kickstarter earnings are considered taxable income: $1500
Professional Music Video: Videographer shooting and editing fees: $1000
TOTAL: $15,000 (with conservative estimates)
I’m setting the goal to be less than the total cost because of the inherent risk in choosing Kickstarter’s all-or-nothing approach. If we clear the goal, there’s more art to be made!
STRETCH GOAL: If we reach $20,000, I can afford to make the Boulder Song music video!
Help me spread the word by sharing this campaign, following me online, and using the hashtag #FannaShanna. Bonus points if you post a video holding up the words and saying "I'm a Fanna Shanna!"
Projected EP Release date: November 2018
Projected Music Video release date: January 2019
Projected singles release dates: 1st one in July 2018!
I can't keep my room clean, I'm terrible at dating, I could never eat one plate at a buffet... but I can write great songs. I was made to be a songwriter and for you to help me get these songs into the world would be the greatest gift. Thank you for supporting a girl following her dreams, and for believing in the value of art on our planet.

Risks and challenges
In any recording project, timelines and deadlines are at the mercy of the health and schedules of the players involved, but I purposely set conservative release dates in order to set realistic expectations. Other than this, there shouldn't be any risks. You will get your rewards. I ran a successful Kickstarter in 2011 and overwhelmed myself with rewards like t-shirts, mugs, jingles, and thank you cards have since learned from those mistakes and haven't put anything in the rewards list that I'm not truly EXCITED to deliver on. I will be posting regular updates to all my backers throughout the project letting everybody see what actions are being taken to fulfill on the project promises!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
