Exclusive Undad prints and artbook - a Quickstarter campaign (Canceled)
Producing custom zombie-family-drama artwork, and adding a new title to the acclaimed Undad series in the process!
More than just another zombie story, Undad is about the challenges of being a husband/father while being (literally) dead inside.
Brett Buckley was a normal family man once. When he unexpectedly turned undead, he found himself struggling to regain the love and respect of his wife and kids. While balancing his horrific cravings against his need to be a good role model for his children, Brett learned that honesty is the only glue that can bind a family together.
Undad was written entirely by me and my wife Katie Walsh-Smith, with a different artist or art team attached to each chapter of the series.
The Undad books are by far my most popular books to date, and also my best received, as the series was shortlisted for both the Australian Shadows Award and the ACT Writing and Publishing Award (the first comic to make this shortlist).
The books have been funded by two successful Kickstarter campaigns, and a grant from Creative Partnerships Australia. They've been showcased in articles and features all over the internet.
Readers have been asking me for years whether there would be a third volume of the book (even after Santa Clarita Diet hit the airwaves).
That's where this campaign comes in.
Just the other day we received word from artsACT that Undad Volume Three will be funded by a generous grant.
The grant will cover the page rates paid to the writing and art team for the book. But it won't be covering incidental costs, such as publication fees, artist auditions, and a few other minor costs. That's where this Quickstarter campaign comes in.
At this stage, we're looking to hire four artists to produce work for Undad Volume Three. Ideally, I'm hoping to receive applications from at least a hundred (we're nearly there already), and commission sample artwork from at least twenty, in order to make this final decision.
We're looking to assemble a crack team of artists who want to work on the next volume of Undad. This process involves a paid audition, where artists create a custom piece of Undad artwork as their application.
What we're funding with this Quickstarter is the production of a digital Undad artbook and a series of prints featuring this custom art. The artbook will contain all the custom Undad art produced in the past, as well as all the artwork commissioned as a result of this campaign.
This artbook will also feature a wealth of behind-the-scenes content alongside the artwork, including interesting trivia, notes about the production process, script samples, and much, much, more.
Here's a sample of what's been produced to date (audition art for Undad and Undad Vol 2), along with all the different visual styles that Brett Buckley has worn over the course of the series.
My name is SHANE W SMITH, and I'm an Australian graphic novelist who uses genre to explore and uncover some of the deeper meanings of human experience. Four of my graphic novels have been shortlisted in awards, including the fan-favourite Undad.
I've got a Bachelor Degree in creative writing, I'm the first Australian from any discipline to be invited to Kickstarter's Drip program, and I might be the only person in the world to get a comic published in a refereed academic journal.
Earlier this year, I delivered my millionth comic page into the hands of my fans. My awesome (and growing) fanbase is incredibly supportive of my work. I'm so appreciative: we only crushed this milestone because of you.
Submissions are open right now for artists wishing to join the Undad creative team. We'll be making announcements here about every piece of custom art we commission for this project.

Risks and challenges
This is my seventh Kickstarter project, and by far the simplest in terms of fulfilment. Funding the project means we'll have the money on hand to pay artists for their work. I'm confident that delivering rewards to backers will be no issue - we'll probably even do the usual Shane W Smith thing and over-deliver!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
