All The King's Men: a massive anthology for sci-fi fans!

AU$ 2,703

ALL THE KING’S MEN is a comics and prose anthology focused on ordinary people struggling to make sense of their lives and dreams in a galaxy torn apart by civil war. The book is 700 pages long, printed in black-and-white, and contains two dozen science fiction stories, ranging from deeply personal character studies to action-packed parables.

The universe of All The King's Men is a cohesive one. This ambitious structure allows the stories to complement each other thematically, and to build in unison to an epic finale that brings closure to dozens of narrative threads.

Sometimes, it's impossible to mend what has been broken...

Each of them is fleeing something different, but they've all come to the same place. When their ship is attacked and marooned in deep space, three dozen refugees pass the time by sharing stories. Things that have happened to them, events they've witnessed, and rumours they've heard.

As time passes and despair sets in, they must rely upon each other to survive. But when the chips are down, will they all be pulling in the same direction?

Featuring stories from two dozen brilliant writers from around the world, All The King’s Men takes a look at the lives of those on the periphery, ordinary people struggling to make sense of their lives and dreams in a galaxy torn apart by civil war.

The primary purpose of this campaign is to get the book into your hands at an attractive and discounted rate, along with some incentives and opportunities to obtain some additional books.

A secondary objective of this campaign is to raise marketing funds.

All money raised by this campaign - after fulfilling rewards - goes towards funding launch events, artist alley tables, advertising, review copies  and other promotional opportunities for All The King's Men. The more it raises, the more events we'll be able to take the book to.

But there's plenty for you to gain too. Every stretch goal we unlock (details below) means even more great stuff just for you.

Our first stretch goal alone unlocks a total of about 900 additional pages of content, and our second stretch goal unlocks a further 1000 pages!

STRETCH GOAL 1: UNLOCKED!
If funding reaches $2,000 (or we get 91 supporters)

  • All supporters will receive a digital copy of the SHANE W SMITH ARTBOOK from 2015. That's nearly 300 pages of sample pages, character profiles, unpublished stories, and behind-the-scenes goodies.
  • Supporters at the $5 level will receive a digital copy of THE LESSER EVIL.
  • Supporters at the $20 level and above will receive a digital copy of JAMES FLAMESTAR AND THE STARGAZERS and UNDAD VOLUME ONE

CURRENT TARGET: If funding reaches $3,750 (or we get 150 supporters):

  • Supporters at the $5 level will receive a digital copy of PEACEFUL TOMORROWS VOLUME ONE and PEACEFUL TOMORROWS VOLUME TWO.
  • Supporters at the $20 level and above will receive a digital copy of ACADEMAESTHETICS, UNDAD VOLUME TWO, and the UNDAD JOURNAL.
  • Supporters at the $150 level will receive an additional copy of ALL THE KING'S MEN.

If funding reaches $5,000 (or we get 200 supporters):

  • Supporters at the $5 level will receive a digital copy of THE GAME.
  • Supporters at the $20 level and above will receive a digital copy of the unpublished TRIUMVIRATUS #1: CHOSEN.
  • All supporters at all levels will receive some additional digital content (TBD, but may include content written by other anthology contributors).

If funding reaches $10,000:

  • Supporters at the $5 level will receive a copy of JAMES FLAMESTAR AND THE STARGAZERS.
  • Supporters at the $20 level and above will receive TBD additional digital content.
  • Supporters at the $40 level will have the opportunity to get a second copy of ALL THE KING'S MEN for just $10 more.
  • Supporters at the $150 level will receive a second copy of a book of their choice (other than ALL THE KING'S MEN, which they will already be receiving two of).
  • A pool of $1,250 will be distributed evenly among the anthology's writers ($50 apiece).

For every further $10,000 raised, $1,250 will be paid out to the writers.

Referral bonus

Upon the conclusion of this launch event, all pre-orders will be filled by means of the usual Kickstarter backer survey.

One of the questions in the survey will give you an opportunity to nominate where you heard about All The King's Men.

If an All The King's Men backer is mentioned five times, they will enter into a draw to have their pledge increased in value to the $150 tier (or if they're already at the $150 tier, to keep the goods and have $100 refunded to them)!

This chance kicks in at $3,750 funding, and more chances to win will open up for every subsequent $3,750 raised.

So don't be shy about telling people about the great value on offer here. YOU could be the big winner.

Add-ons

Add a second copy of All The King's Men to your rewards by adding $25 to your pre-order (available only to those pledging at the $40 level and higher). Add a third copy (and as many thereafter as you like) for $20 per copy.

Give them as Christmas gifts; pool together with your housemates/ workmates; collect them for your book club; donate them and write off the cost; you even have my blessing to on-sell them if you want to.

If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, just look for the MANAGE PLEDGE button.

All The King’s Men is a project years in the making. It is edited by Shane W Smith, an acclaimed creator with a huge back catalogue of multi-award nominated work, and features the prose and comics work of two dozen talented writers from around the world.

We're Kickstarting All The King's Men primarily to provide generous bundle discounts and exclusive pre-order incentives for our supporters. Any money raised will be used to promote the book, and make further payments to writers (see Stretch Goals below).

The book itself has been made, and (thanks to a generous grant from ArtsACT) the writers have been paid for their work.

All The King's Men is ready to go, and will be sent out immediately upon the conclusion of this campaign.

All The King’s Men takes place in the same universe as Shane's previously published works The Lesser Evil, Peaceful Tomorrows, and The Game. However, this anthology has been specifically designed as a stand-alone title in the series, and can be fully enjoyed by readers who have no knowledge of the other books.

For completionists, this Kickstarter campaign offers you the chance to obtain the entire series at a heavily discounted bundle rate. Every pledge over $20 gets you more than 2,000 pages of epic sci-fi goodness!

The peaceful advancement of a small world is treated as an act of war.

A tourist destination meets its violent destiny when valuable minerals are found in its soil.

A young girl and her sole remaining friend struggle to survive in the ruins of a long-forgotten war zone.

An orphan, abandoned by the system and forced to make his own way through the galaxy, falls in love for the first time.

A young diplomat on her first assignment is sent to negotiate with a group of dissatisfied rebels who have a secret weapon and a plan to rebuild the entire galaxy.

A secret facility on the edge of space gathers addicts from around the galaxy for the purpose of conducting experiments upon them.

A famed hospital ship is doomed to a slow and undignified death, its decommissioning used as a symbol of a peace that no one truly believes in.

A small group of malcontents, fed up with their world being caught in the middle of ongoing war, take drastic action.

An estranged father and son reunite in the midst of a violent conflict between a mining conglomerate and its unionised employees.

Forced to spend every one of her birthdays huddled underground waiting for an annual natural disaster to pass, a young girl sneaks above the surface on her tenth birthday, and uncovers an appalling truth.

A washed-up one-armed fighter returns to the ring for one last fight; a fight he can't win; a fight he must win.

A small regional community on the fringe of civilisation must learn to deal with the sudden introduction of a Senate garrison to their world, and the violent enforcement of new bylaws that clash with their traditional, peaceful way of life.

These stories and many more, make up All The King's Men.

In recognition of the logistical difficulties facing an anthology with a multinational team, we are offering a wide range of digital rewards in addition to print copies of the anthology.

For backers seeking a paperback copy of the book, printing and distribution will be taking place simultaneously in Australia, the USA, and the UK, to minimise the impact of exorbitant international postage rates.

We're using a simple stacking reward hierarchy here. The more you pledge, the more you get.

NB. If you want to build your own bundle, pledge a buck (so you don't miss out on updates), and get in touch with me. We'll make it happen.
