A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

No More Musty Towels.
Towels have two basic jobs: dry my naked body, and dry itself.
So why is it that most towels represent a compromise between softness, absorbency, and quickness to dry?
Not only did my towel have to be luscious and thirsty, it needed to feel fresh and dry before showertime every day. And, of course, continue to deliver over time.
Meet the Onsen Towel.
Dry Towel = Clean Towel
The longer a towel stays wet the more vulnerable it becomes to that musty smell (which means bacteria).
The Onsen Towel is designed to maximize surface area exposure so that it dries faster to avoid the growth of bacteria.

Early in my research I tested a diverse horde of towels. From the seemingly straightforward to the luxuriously pricey, all ended up disappointing.
Buying towels (online and in-store) is a frustrating experience with the overwhelming number of options and their lacking descriptions.
Sure having some options is great, but this was just ridiculous. So I decided to cut through the confusion to offer a single, simple choice.
The waffle weave is what makes the Onsen Towel uniquely qualified to do its job well. Effortlessly absorbent and quick to dry, this is how a towel should be put together.
It's surprisingly lightweight without compromising that soft, luxurious feel. Don’t let all that lusciousness fool you, it’s just curvy in all the right places.
The Onsen Towel weaves the perfect balance of softness, absorbency, and quickness to dry — three of the most lust-after towel attributes.
Lusciously Soft: Premium cotton is woven to feel like something you'd experience at a swanky hotel.
Exfoliating Texture: It's plush with a satisfying texture, the best of both worlds in a single weave.
Airy Curves: Maximized surface area exposure so it can dry itself faster.
100% Premium Cotton: High quality long staple cotton is not only softer, but also stronger.
Softens with Washing: Unlike most, our towel actually gets softer over time.
Certified by Oeko-Tex®: Because you deserve peace of mind.
Generously Sized: 40 x 70 inches (bath sheet), 31 x 57 inches (bath towel), 14 x 33 inches (hand towel), and 14 x 14 inches (face towel).
Colors: Cinder Grey and White
As creatures of habit our days are defined by the basics in life. So isn't it worth paying attention to the tools we rely on for our daily routines?
I started Onsen because better basics make for better living.
I obsess over quality materials and purposeful design so that you end up with something exceptionally useful. It's my mission to help you achieve your best life possible.
The Approach - You, Me, and Japan
Growing up I was greatly influenced by the Japanese culture (it's in my blood!). It wasn't until later while working in Tokyo when I noticed how much value was placed on product quality. Instinctively quick to criticize, both users and makers expect products to be crafted with care and get the job done.
This taught me two things about quality: Learn what people love/hate about a product, and then craft the solution with purpose.
With valuable feedback from friends and family in hand, I turned to the specialists in Japan for inspiration.
By the way, I'm Shane. My love for well-made products grew exponentially while working with Japanese distributors importing international brands. They were very picky about the brands they'd work with, but even more so with each product offered by the brand. Without compromise, it was all about getting the basics right.
My eyes were opened to a whole new way of looking at products, and I've been obsessed ever since.
The more towels you buy, the more you save.

A Better Process
The mill we work with is known for their time-tested processes to deliver higher quality products. Although it takes a little longer and has a higher cost we think it's worth the wait and investment.
Dyeing the cotton fibers in multiple colors before spinning them into yarn is a custom process that takes over a month itself. This is something that isn't readily available, but doing this makes for a truly unique look and ensures the color is more permanent. The yarn is spun at a lower speed to ease the stress on the cotton, this adds to the softness and strength of the final product.
Woven with great attention to detail, the Onsen Towel makes showertime better every day.
The Onsen Towel is certified by Oeko-Tex®, an international association focused on textile safety and sustainable production. Oeko-Tex® tests for known harmful substances and chemicals as well as for acidity and color fastness. All components of the product must comply with stringent Oeko-Tex® standards to achieve certification.

Risks and challenges
Our factory partners are ready to go. We’ve worked hard over the last several months to build up these relationships and expect to hit all of our delivery deadlines as planned.
With that said, there are inherent risks in the production process that may be beyond control. At any rate I will keep backers updated throughout the campaign and manufacturing phase to ensure that I stay as true as possible to the proposed delivery schedule.
We have already produced a small sample run – and some of our lucky friends are already enjoying them.
