Shadowrift: Skittering Darkness is a new expansion to the heroic adventure game Shadowrift (also available through this campaign). Skittering Darkness reveals two new menacing Monster Factions to challenge even the bravest heroes, and a selection of new hero and town cards to aid you in your quest.
Backers of this campaign will be the first to receive this new expansion and will get it at a great price. More importantly, as a backer, you're helping to expand the world of Shadowrift by adding more content through a series of must-have stretch goals.
Shadowrift is a cooperative adventure game with deckbuilding elements, where the players are trying to save the town of New Haven from horrible monsters that have started spilling out of dimensional portals known as the Shadowrifts. You're trying to fight your way past them and seal the rifts shut, or hold them at bay long enough to build your town into an impregnable fortress.
Each of you will be building your own deck, but at the same time you will collectively be trying to build up and protect a Town deck which is common to all players. Building up your own deck is important because it more or less represents "leveling up" and is how you get the power you need to defeat the monsters, but your whole goal here is to protect the town, so you can't entirely ignore the town cards.
Every round, monsters will be attacking, trying to kill your villagers and generally cause trouble. Once monsters have attacked and new monsters have come into play, the heroes (that's you!) will get to attack, learn new skills, hire new workers for town, and so on, in any order you want. There's no specified turn order when the heroes are acting - instead players get to play cards in whatever order works best for them.
It's a fully cooperative experience. All the players working together to fight back the darkness - that sets Shadowrift apart from most deckbuilders, even among other cooperative deckbuilders. Each monster has an easy-to-understand plan for what they'll do when they advance, and the town deck provides not just a sense for how close you are to losing but also some theme and story, as guards give their lives to protect other villagers or the witch helps empower your spells.
Short answer: YES. To start off, there are six monster factions to face off against in the base game, and two more each in the Sickle Moon and Skittering Darkness expansions. Your core strategy against different factions can be radically different, to deal with the way they're trying to destroy your town. But even if you've faced a monster faction before, the way you deal with them will be different every game, because eight of the cards available to buy and improve your own decks also change from game to game. In the base game alone, there are more than a million valid ways to set the game up. This has only grown exponentially with the addition of expansions like Skittering Darkness.
As the game's designer, I can't really answer this question in an unbiased way, but here's a fact that isn't based on personal opinion: Almost everybody I've ever played the game with has bought it - most of them immediately.
