Legendary Forgotten Realms creator joins the Shadowlands!

We are extremely excited to announce that legendary Ed Greenwood, the creator of The Forgotten Realms will join our Shadowlands kickstarter project! We told you that we wanted to bring back that old school Forgotten Realms campaign setting feel and there is no one better to do just that than the very person who wrote the book!

Ed has been a huge inspiration to all of us here at BlackStar Studios and we know that his brilliant imagination, creativity, and inspiration will guide the Shadowlands project into something even greater than we all could have hoped for!

Please spread the word and let old school fans of The Forgotten Realms know that they should check out the Shadowlands!

We are also hoping to make another major announcement once we reach the $13,500 mark. This will be another epic announcement, sure to get you excited!

Let's all reach for the Goals!

Ed , all I can say is WOW! When I thought what the FR revelation was gonna be I didnt even thibk it might be something this great!

Having just read his newest Elminster book and hisFR supplement detailibg life in Realms, I know he will make those places in Shadowlands have Forgottenrealms feeling for sure while still remaining true to Shadowlands.
You guys are really getting your big guns out, heh.. Cant wait what the 13,5k is gonna bring us..

Considering how big the world of Shadowlands is, how much detailed info is each area gonna have? Is it 1 page now? And if we hit stretch goals its plus 1-4 pages?

      Hi Thompson,

My pleasure! I am *slightly* faster after having returned from PAX and gotten a good night's sleep! The proof will be in the delivery I suppose. I can say this, the Shadowlands remains an amalgamation of a lot of different ideas. Some ideas are better expressed and described by others, and different ones by others. I am exceptionally proud of the team we have because of how their strengths compliment one another, something exceptionally important to me and to everyone at BlackStar.

Morality and ideology are hugely important to us in the setting and we want the moral choices and beliefs of PCs to really matter. Our target audience consists of mostly 30+ year olds who are a little more mature, who like and appreciate complex ideas and situations, and whose gaming roots are in 2nd and 3rd Edition. We’re hoping that through creating complex cultures, factions, and religious organizations, we can encourage players to grapple with these more adult oriented themes. These are elements that are present in the great writing of yesteryear, but for various reasons were toned down.

We don't think of adding Ed, or anyone else, to our team as watering down our vision, but of going back to our roots and adding the very best to an already great idea. We're a small studio and no doubt always will be (I don't have any ambitions of us becoming big), and so it's my pride and vision of my world which drives us forward. I think that Ed will bring a *great* strength to that, augmenting the already wonderful ideas with years of honing his craft and developing wonderful ideas. We're looking very forward to working alongside him!

      Thanks again!

      Chris

      Chris,
Thanks for the prompt reply! I'll remain cautiously optimistic and supportive of the project. Looking forward to it.

      Hi Thompson,

Right now Ed's role will be to specifically develop those areas of the Shadowlands that are most influenced by The Forgotten Realms. The world of Saemyyr is VAST and takes its influence from both gaming and real world sources. Ed's work speaks to one specific aspect of the campaign world, but not to all of it.

So I would say, worry not, the end result will be that Ed will work on what he does best! The world itself is still what it is, an incredibly large, complex, involved, and multifaceted world where many different cultures, ideas, and people interact. Ed is one piece in that giant and beautiful tapestry, but we would never sacrifice the greater feel of Saemyyr and the Shadowlands, no matter how big the celebrity.

I've spent almost 20 years dreaming and imagining the Shadowlands and we will make sure that it comes out as the rich world we've promised!

      All the best,

      Chris

I... uh... How big a role will he have? I know he's the all-father of this huge world, but I backed this because it seemed like something different from the standard fantasy setting. Ed Greenwood is the gold standard for the standard, and I respect him for that, but it's also the reason I like to keep several arms' lengths between his work and anything I run or read. His contributions to fantasy are much the same as the contributions of Madame Tussaud's to the world of celebrity. His involvement immediately makes me want to retract my support, not because I think he'll be the one writing the rulebook or anything, but because it makes me wonder why the architects of such an interesting and innovative world don't have see him for what he is: a paragon of too-ordinary fantasy.
