Hi! My name is Shadi Toloui-Wallace. Music has always played an active and integral part in my life. My parents have been huge advocates for the arts and made many sacrifices while my siblings and I were growing up so that we could explore our creative powers of expression.
Why I Make Music
What’s most important to me as a musician, is that I have a supportive community to be a part of and to be of service. As a teenager I began to read Baha’i Sacred texts and put them to music. It wasn’t until I started playing these songs for others that I realized the impact that putting the Sacred text to music could have on the human spirit.
The prophet founder of the Baha’i Faith, Baha’u’llah, says that: ‘We have made music a ladder by which souls may ascend…’. The combination of faith and music seemed very organic for me and I never really questioned their validity as a solid unit.
As I grew up I soon realized that there wasn’t much out there in terms of contemporary forms of Baha’i inspired music. I felt that if I created something relatable/relevant and readily accessible, others would be able to connect to the Baha'i Faith like I was, and I’d hopefully inspire them to start contributing to this reservoir of Baha’i inspired media.
Family & Collaborations
A highlight of my experience was working with my brother Josh on the title track Leather Bound Book and on Radiant Heart with my mum Shidan. Neither my mum nor I expected any of the attention we received for this track. It seemed so natural and timely to work with her and combine our two styles and cultures. Bringing the language of my Faith to a younger audience was important. A few years later I had the opportunity to sing on my mum's debut album Phoenix of Love. This collaboration was a bounty and privilege that I want to continue on my upcoming album.
The release of my first album 6 years ago opened undreamed possibilities to visit incredible places, and gave me the opportunity to meet the most fascinating people. I’ve made friends from all over the world and these friends have made it possible for me to continue to travel and share my music and inspiration based on the teachings of the Baha'i Faith.
I’m driven by making music and collaborating with other musicians to deliver high quality music that serves the community.
However, it is not very financially sustainable, therefore I need to work full time to support myself while I continue to create and share my music. I’m currently the Administrator of the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, it’s a non-profit music school that offers programming to children and youth who experience socio-economic barriers to accessing music education. Since moving to Vancouver I’ve grown and developed and spent a lot of time exploring various genres and exposing myself to a variety of artistic styles. This has informed a strong identity for my next project.
I have heard your requests for new music loud and clear and I’m finally ready to get back into the studio, and I need your help and support to bring my vision to reality. This music isn’t about me, it’s about engaging the community that’s brought me to this point and hopefully inspiring others. I’ve been so lucky to gain your support over the years and I want you to be involved in making my third album happen. Put simply, I can’t imagine doing this without you! I have been working on a number of original songs as well as arranging more Baha’i writings to original music.
I love the effect that music has on people and have been honoured to hear many uplifting stories over the years of the impact it’s had. This is what I am truly passionate about! I’m going to be doing things a little differently this time. I’m working with new collaborators (that includes you) and live studio musicians for the first time, in a new studio located in my neighborhood of East Vancouver. I have teamed up with some incredible artists, including my friend and producer of this project, Leif Thorseth.
In order to produce album #3, and do it with the integrity and excellence it deserves, it requires this thing called money. I want to use Kickstarter's innovative platform to bring my community of support together and join each other in bringing this music to life. The only way to make this happen is if we reach our funding goal of $27,000.
I know what you're thinking, $27K sounds like a lot. But this is the absolute minimum we need in order to make a great CD on a tight budget. Let me break it down for you.
What's In It For You?
In exchange for supporting the development of my third album I wanted to give you the chance to be the first to receive a copy of the work you helped create. Every single person who pledges will receive a FREE TICKET to my Album Launch Concert in Vancouver later this year, I can't wait to thank you personally! In addition to pre-ordering a signed copy of my album, I have a unique range of rewards in exchange for your contribution including, a curated Songbook of my music, Skype concerts and hangouts anywhere in the world, unique Calligraphy Poster Artwork, and for a lucky few I will travel and perform in your home (to big and small audiences) anywhere in the world. Risks and challenges
Backing my project is not the same thing as buying my CD. It is about backing my vision for a new collaborative approach to producing music. I love making music and am excited by the possibility of calling on my supportive friends and family to help make this project a reality, and share it with the world. However, if there are sudden unforeseen circumstances that affect the production of the album, we will be fully accountable to our backers. We will provide detailed reports of what issues exist and how we are addressing them. We will do everything we can to honor our commitment to our backers.
