About

Welcome to our latest Campaign for Era: Lyres, the storytelling game where you try to convince a tavern full of people that you are an adventurer!

There are 100 copies of the brand new Definitive Edition Rulebook available, as well as another opportunity to get the Pocket Rulebook or one of the small number of remaining Deluxe Edition Rulebooks.

Era: Lyres is a hilarious, collaborative storytelling experience like no other.

You are someone who admires adventurers... or at least the gold and glory they get! But you don't want to lose your limbs, so the "heading out into the wild and fighting ferocious creatures" is something that gives you pause.

But what's an adventurer when they return to town? Just a person with a sword and a story!

So, you head to a blacksmith, buy a sword and head into a nearby tavern (not too close to where you live!). As you enter, you declare "I just killed a dragon on that mountaintop!", and the tavern falls silent.

Now, you must tell your story... and you'd better be convincing! It's lucky you have your friends to back you up, right?

In this game, the players work together as a group to tell a story to the GM, who plays as the audience of the tavern. The group can tell whatever story they want, but will have to improvise during the course of the story.

Whenever the players say something which the GM feels the audience might question, one of the tavern's patrons will interrupt the story to demand proof.

For example, the adventurer might claim to have punched a dragon so hard in the face that it fell unconscious! At this point, the audience member will call them out on that – no-one is that strong, surely? – and the player who made the claim will have an opposed roll against the best-qualified person in the audience.

The roll signifies a contest or demonstration: in this example, it may be an arm wrestle with the local blacksmith to prove they really are that strong!

If the adventurer wins, the patrons of the tavern will believe them, and the confidence in the story and the adventurers will rise. If not, some patrons may walk out in disgust, declaring them fake, or "Lyres".

At the end of the story, if the audience believe the story, they will reward the adventurers with gold and pass on the story, increasing their fame.

Of course, there will always be another story, and a new audience may not be so friendly to the adventurers...

Era: Lyres was the second game we published, so we were still learning at that time. Since then, we've never expanded the content of the book!

We feel it's time we gave Era: Lyres, now approaching four years old, some amazing new content, a revised version of the existing rulebook and more!

As a result, the Definitive Edition will include:

  • New stories, such as the arrival of Ann Trout, assistant to Professor Wilton-Smythe in his research into the magical creatures of the kingdom!
  • Several new Bestiary entries, including Vampires and Gnomes
  • The Traveller's Guide to Yarnolth and the Surrounding Lands (previously sold separately)
  • Two alternatives for character creation!
  • New Weapon and Equipment options
  • More advice for GMs for running the game, gained from years of experience with groups all over the world!
  • Example characters and backstories

We know you'll love the Definitive Edition Rulebook – it contains everything you could want to know about the game!

But there's more...

We are also offering some exclusive rewards, including a Lyre's Map of Yarnolth (printed on cloth, A2 sized), 3 Era: Lyres coins to get you started at your first Tavern and a signed copy of the Definitive Edition Rulebook.

These unique rewards are only available from this Kickstarter!

This wonderful map of one sector of the City of Yarnolth from the perspective of a Lyre will be printed on cloth at A2 size, for everyone in your group to enjoy!

The Era d10 Rule Set is focused on fast, fun resolution of actions and has been optimised for Era: Lyres accordingly. It is a multiple d10 dice pool system with a variable Threshold for Success.

Players roll a number of d10s, attempting to roll higher than a given Success Threshold. The more dice they roll above the Threshold, the more Successes they achieve.

The Threshold rises as the action becomes more difficult to accomplish and the number of dice increases as a player becomes more skilled. While one Success might achieve a positive result, the more Successes achieved, the better the outcome is for the player.

Of course, things can also go wrong - if you roll more 1s than Successes, you will Fumble. And of course, the harder an action is, the more likely it is you will Fumble!

The rule set has several specific optimisations for Era: Lyres, focused on fast resolution of the audience questioning adventurers through opposed rolls.

The number of dice is defined using an Attribute and Skill system, which each define their own areas of influence, you roll your dice depending on what you're attempting. Whether using Dexterity + Archery for a precision shot, Intelligence + Archery for assessing how good the bow you have been handed is, or Luck + Archery for a complete long shot, you'll have to adapt to your circumstances with the various combinations.

Unfortunately, as people who are not adventurers, you will not be quite as expert as you claim to be in certain areas... which will lead to some difficult moments at times!

Not long after the game first came out, I did a livestream with the amazing guys from Encounter Roleplay, which shows the dice rolls and gameplay very well (until we started having connection issues!):

We also have the usual set of videos showing one of the methods of character creation:

And here are some example rolls to show you how the Opposed Roll system works!

The amazing guys at Dice and Stuff also created some characters and these are the concepts they came up with:

As I'm sure you can see, there's no limit to the different characters you can create!

Interviews about Era: Lyres with the creator, Ed Jowett, will be coming very soon, so watch this space!

Ed at down with Eran and Uri (an existing fan!) from On the Shoulders of Dwarves about Era: Lyres, Shades of Vengeance and the RPG scene in the UK!

Ed joined Morrus and Peter on Morrus' Unoffocial RPG Podcast in December, talking about what is planned for 2019, including Era: Lyres Definitive Editon... Era: Lyres was mentioned again this week in their favourite game ever (23:11)

Ed did a Q&A with Dan Davenport on the #randomworlds chatroom. It's well worth a look if you want to know a lot about what the game is supposed to provide players!

We'll be on the amazing "We're Not Wizards" Podcast shortly!

Thanks to the amazing EraScapes team, we have been able to put together a few short stories about Professor Wilton-Smythe and his new assistant, Ann Trout! Enjoy!

More to come...

70% Rewards Creation and Postage
We’re pushing the boat out a little further than normal, producing a high-quality Definitive Edition for a lower price than we could normally. This means that the majority of the funds go straight into funding printing of the books and creation of the extra rewards!

20% Writers
The writers of the new material (it’s mainly Ed!) have not yet been paid for this work, so they will get a small amount of the Kickstarter profits!

5-10% Kickstarter
Kickstarter takes its usual 5-10% cut. Anything additional (where they only take 5%) goes as a priority to the rewards creation to improve the quality!

We're adding several new towns to the Kingdom of Yarnolth and explaining the local customs and population, thanks to the research of Professor Wilton-Smythe and his assistant, A Trout!

Risks and challenges

Shades of Vengeance has run over 30 crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter. While we haven't been mistake-free, we're very proud of our on-time delivery record (all but two Kickstarters have been fully delivered early!).

We use each successive Kickstarter to build on the lessons learned from the previous, and we learn fast. At this point, we're confident in our ability to deliver the rewards we're committing to and to keep you informed if there are any delays.

The biggest individual challenge for this Kickstarter is managing a team of artists and writers from all over the world. We all live in different timezones, so coordinating is a huge logistical challenge. Ed's a Project Manager by trade and has some experience in this area, however!

We're dedicated first and foremost to continuing delivering you the best material we can, and secondly to bring it to you on time. We hope you'll support our efforts to do that!

Please note that we print and ship from the UK, due to being based there, so prices are set accordingly!
