About this project
Lacuna is a comic by game designer Ed Jowett, and veteran writer Amy Allworden. Together with dialogue consultant Johnathan Lewis, Penciller and Inker Rudi Rillf and colourist Sathit Kaew, they have brought Ed's "Era: The Empowered" universe to life in what, we hope, will be the first in a number of comics following individuals in that Universe.
The goal of this Kickstarter is to raise funds to complete the comic and to get it printed, as well as getting up on various digital sites such as Comixology and Amazon.
By supporting this comic, you're not just bringing a comic to life about the kind of coming of age we always imagined superheroes would have in the modern world. You're helping us get comics out into the world that aren't just the same old thing with superheroes.
The Empowered universe is huge, with a weight of history that will be explored in the rulebooks, but there's not much time to focus on individual characters within that, to really watch them grow (because players want to do that themselves!). We want to give you the chance to help shape this universe with your comments and feedback, as it's being created.
Chris is a typical teenager. He's headstrong, rebellious and has been in trouble with the law more than once.
When he discovers he has superpowers, he begins to use them to fight the kind of criminals people believe he is becoming.
"Lacuna" has operated for several months but has never met another Empowered before... that changes on the worst day of his life when, abandoned by his family, he finds someone else just like him...
This is going to be a full-colour comic! I apologise that some of the pages we're presenting here in the preview are inked rather than coloured. We'll be giving you a view of what's going on in the Kickstarter's Updates.
Ed Jowett is a tabletop roleplaying game creator, with several games and a few comics under his belt. This is the first comic in his Era: The Empowered universe, but there are already 2 (with a third on the way!) in his Era: The Consortium universe!
Amy Allworden has been writing for years! She met up with Ed during Era: The Consortium and the two have been working together ever since!
Johnathan Lewis has been in the industry 15 years and ghostwritten extensively, along with producing his own works like Peeved! He's been consulting for us on dialogue and also will be doing the lettering.
Rudi Roelff produces some great superhero artwork and leapt at the opportunity to join in this project!
Sathit Kaew is an experienced colourist with a lot of work under his belt. He's lending his touch to Lacuna #1 to bring it to reality for you!
10% Kickstarter + Processing fees - Kickstarter takes its cut and processing fees are 3-5%... Anything that's extra on here will go towards Lacuna #2!
40% Artists and Writers - Some of the people working on this project are being paid based on funds from the Kickstarter!
20% Lacuna #2 - We all love Lacuna as a comic and want to bring you another instalment in his story. If we can get enough from this remaining 20%, we'll be bringing you Lacuna #2!
Risks and challenges
This is our 9th crowdfunding project on Kickstarter.
While we haven't been mistake-free, we've always delivered on or ahead of time (except for Lyres where a delay was agreed with Backers to give them more content!). Each successive Kickstarter builds on the lessons learned from the previous, and we learn fast. At this point we're confident in our ability to deliver the rewards we're committing to and to keep you informed if there are any delays.
The biggest individual challenge for this Kickstarter is managing a team of artists from all over the world. We all live in different timezones, so coordinating is a huge logistical challenge. We have several more pages of production art to get through before this book is finalised, but Ed's been doing this for several years (and is a Project Manager by trade)!
We're dedicated to delivering you the best material we can, with Roleplaying Games, Lacuna and all our other projects!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
