In this game, you are a pilot, with your own "Paladin" one-man ship, sent out to explore space and defend Humanity! Together with other pilots, you'll form a squadron and head out into the black...
This game offers rules for space combat, salvaging materials and upgrading your fighter, a list of bases you can visit (both friendly and not-so-friendly), space-based dogfights and a variety of weapons from bullet-based to plasma cannons!
If you like games such as Homeworld, Freelancer or Elite: Dangerous, this is the RPG for you!
Note: The Digital Version is available in Era d10 (Compatible with other Era Games), Savage Worlds or FATE! While the Era d10 version of the book contains all of the rules needed to play, Savage Worlds and FATE require the Core Rules from those systems.
All Backers who join before 5th September will gain an additional bonus reward to celebrate the launch of the second Voyager probe and the Projects of Earth Initiative!
I'm a Sci-Fi kind of guy. I love it, and I'm always building Science Fiction universes with aliens, exploration and other weird and wonderful things!
When Kickstarter launched their Project of Earth initiative for the anniversaries of the Voyager probes, I was inspired not by what Earth is today, or what kind of message I might send into space, but by what might happen to a probe when it arrived on an alien world. What reaction would aliens have to it? How would they respond to this thing appearing?
I felt this idea was an amazing opportunity to create a game I've wanted to create ever since my first - a game where the player lives in space, seldom landing on planets and explores. Of course, the addition of angry aliens who took the probe's arrival as an attack was an interesting twist on the idea, and resulted in this game being really rather unique.
In Era: Balam, your ship is a part of your character, as much as the pilot.
It defines most of your physical statistics, providing a duality to this game which I've never explored before: while a pilot may technically survive without their ship, it will feel like they have lost a part of themselves.
The Paladin ships which appear in this game are fully upgradable, and provide various options as the players progress, including painlessly changing "Class" by replacing the Main Module!
Era: Balam is a Tabletop RPG based in a far-off solar system.
When our space probe arrived on an alien world, it crash-landed on one of their power stations and the resulting disaster rendered their world uninhabitable. Seeking revenge and a new world to live on, the aliens escaped from their world on a massive ship and set a course along the path of the probe...
They encountered Humanity at a remote outpost many years later, in a system known as HX-7371. More recently, it's come to be known as the "Killing Fields", as the war between the aliens' superior forces and the fighters the Humans have been able to cobble together has now lasted two years.
The main colony in the system, Balam, is well-hidden, but if the aliens were ever to find it, they would be able to find their way to Earth... and that might mean extinction.
You'll have the chance to explore various planets and the space around them: Fly over icy plains to track down an important salvage opportunity, brave the depths of space for scouting missions and land on the moons of a spectacular Gas Giant as you explore and attempt to stop the aliens from completing their mission...
Your Choice of 3 Rule Sets:
Era d10, Savage Worlds and FATE!
This game is being produced in 3 rule sets to allow as many people as possible to enjoy Era: Balam!
You can choose to have your Digital Version of the book in Era d10, Savage Worlds or FATE!
The critically-acclaimed Era d10 Rule Set is our core system and is compatible with all of the other Era games. It uses a system of Attributes and Skills to create a Success-counting dice pool system. In it, you roll Attribute + Skill in d10s and the difficulty of the task determines which numbers count as Successes. Many rolls are opposed, with whoever gains a greater number of Successes being deemed the winner, which provides simplification in these actions.
Era d10 is a fast, easy-to-learn system that anyone can pick up, while still having enough complexities to keep mechanically-minded players interested! It provides support for narrative and rewards roleplaying, so it's perfect for this game.
Era d10 Character Creation Video
We've used the Era d10 Rule Set on many other games, and we're thrilled to be finally expanding the options for space combat further for the first time since Era: The Consortium's Core Rulebook.
Savage Worlds is a widely-recognised rule set and the amazing Dave Blewer who is helping us to produce the Savage Worlds version of the game has previously worked with Pinnacle Entertainment, so we're sure it'll reflect what you will be expecting to see for a Savage Worlds game!
The Savage Worlds book will require the Savage Worlds Core Rules to play.
FATE is something which Ed Jowett is very familiar with, having worked with Sanchit Sharma on Marked For Death, as well as playing various other games. As a result, we're going to be offering this game in a FATE version as well!
The FATE book will require the FATE Core Rules to play.
Most of the artwork is complete, done by the very talented Leonardo Ardila. The small number of extra pieces we're working to produce will be done in good time for the delivery date!
Ed Jowett is the Lead Writer for the Core Rulebook and the Editor for the rest of the material. Now a veteran of game creation, this is Ed's seventh Tabletop RPG Setting, including the critically acclaimed RPGs Era: The Consortium, Era: Survival and Era: Lyres.
Leonardo Ardila has produced the fantastic artwork you see through this campaign, and will be adding to it as needed for the Campaign Expansions! He asked to say to everyone that he thoroughly enjoyed this project and hope that you enjoy his art as much as he does!
Dave Blewer is working with us to ensure the Savage Worlds version of the game is as awesome as the Era d10 version! As a veteran of Savage Worlds (Sundered Skies, Achtung! Cthulhu), we can't imagine anyone better than Dave to be on board for this project!
Darren Pearce is the writer for the Mission Pack 1. Fresh off the Judge Dredd RPG and the upcoming Era: The Chosen, Darren can't wait to get stuck into missions for this game!
Graeme Penman has been working with the Shades of Vengeance team on several projects, particularly the Patreon Sessions which we release monthly! As a Campaign-writing veteran, he's looking forward to the chance to make the Era: Balam universe come to life in Mission Pack 2!
Keith Draws has, once again, done an amazing job on the layout and graphic design for Era: Balam! He's laid out all of our books so far and become practised at making them reflect the themes of the game perfectly!
Alexander Korchnev has done all the graphic design for this Kickstarter once again, and it looks great, if we say so ourselves!

50% Development and Fulfilment - Experience has taught us what it takes to fulfil a game is always more than you think... but 50% has proven right for us, in general, so far!
10% Kickstarter - Kickstarter takes 5%, plus 3-5% payment processing fees. As always, we assumed 10% and anything extra gets put into Stretch Goals to ensure they are the highest possible quality!
40% Stretch Goals - We have some ambitious Stretch Goals from some brilliant writers on this project. We'll be putting a 40% of the money from this Kickstarter into that portion to make sure they are as awesome as we envision!
We have loads of Stretch Goals planned and we will be happy to add more as and when we need them!
Risks and challenges
Shades of Vengeance has been creating roleplaying games for 6 years now, and we have previously run 20 Kickstarter projects. From the beginning, we have shown we will keep on supporting all of our roleplaying game lines with their own adventures, supplements, free downloads and/or podcasts.
If we reach one or more stretch goals, we can reward our team members with more work and opportunities to showcase their talents in great-looking extras!
Additionally, we will continue our commitment to you to inform you if anything is delayed, as soon as we know ourselves.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
