What is this project about?
The San Francisco Neighborhood Portraits project seeks to preserve the cultural and architectural authenticity of select San Francisco neighborhoods and provide unseen perspectives, often underlining the city’s unique geologic landscapes. Original San Francisco architecture may be altered to conform to the needs of new incoming businesses and residents, or destroyed in natural disasters such as earthquakes and fires. Despite the constant refashioning of the city, the relationship between the people of San Francisco and its unique geologic foundation is ever changing.
By isolating select fragments of the entire cityscape, I have captured significant aspects of San Francisco neighborhoods that may continue to disappear due to the effects of gentrification and cultural shifts. My neighborhood portraits project has given me the opportunity to archive the unique culture and architecture of the city as documents of what I have been so fortunate to experience from living here. My film, The Mission, is my first portrait profiling the Mission district of San Francisco, and functions as the template for the entire project.
Neighborhoods of immediate interest for future portraits include The Presidio, Chinatown, Russian Hill, Potrero Hill, Bernal Heights, Telegraph Hill, Pacific Heights, Nob Hill, Lower Haight, the Tenderloin, and those neighborhoods suggested by donators. The finished production will consist of at least seven San Francisco neighborhoods in the form of single channel video and/or video installation. Upon completion, I will begin to travel beyond SF city limits, and attempt to construct portraits of cities around the world through simple observations, digital compositing and diegetic sound.
As a recent graduate of Massachusetts College of Art & Design, I no longer have the same access to camera equipment and facilities that were available to me as a student. Your donations will be used to purchase a camera, lenses and additional equipment necessary for me to resume production immediately.
I thank you in advance for your consideration and contributions. I hope to be in your neighborhood soon, and, in the near future, cities across the globe.
