About this project
Ever wish you had a second monitor for your laptop that is lightweight and can easily fit into your bag? This was my thought when inventing Able-HD. I often found that monitors are bulky, no matter how slim they claim to be.
Today, most people choose to use a laptop, tablet or other gadgets. I currently use a laptop because it's good with a mobile working environment, it's portable and most importantly it fits in my bag. But how does it help with productivity? I usually have two or three monitors working in my office. It's impossible for me to travel with my second or third monitor in my bag along with my laptop. Thus, the problem with a laptop is limited portable productivity.
In this case, what if there was a monitor that weighed less than an iPad, with a 17" inch screen and comes with HD 1080p resolution? A quality HD device can often times cost outrageous amounts of money, but Able-HD able to offer lower price!
Experience Able-HD: The Portable DIY HD Monitor
The Able-HD is a monitor that gives you HD 1080p resolution, is 17" inches but weighs less than iPad.
The Able-HD is a good companion for your laptop -- it fits in your backpack, can be placed beside your laptop and travels easily.
The Able-HD playing a 1080 HD movies.
The Able-HD monitor can even be used to watch movies from your smartphone or DVD player.
Just think the Able-HD as an ordinary monitor but slimmer, lighter and still able to provide same HD quality as big bulky monitor.
How can a monitor have all of these cool features?
While I am not inventing nor producing the LED screen. I am able to use it with an adapter board to create the Able-HD.
The board has more connection ports/features than any of the common LED/LCD monitors on the market. It includes HDMI / DVI/ VGA ports, a universal charger port and an Audio In/Out on the board. The universal charger allows an ease of travel as only one cord is needed.
It also comes with a stand so you may place it next to your laptop. The foldable stand also allows you to adjust the monitor degree angle.
Although this product is designed to be plug and play, please note that this monitor is a DIY electronics project geared towards more advanced tinkerers and users. Basic knowledge of LED monitors and HDMI or VGA ports is necessary for use.
TRI-STAND: Able-HD best accompanion
I've found the perfect, unique accessory, called Tri-Stand, to accompany the Able-HD monitor. The Tri-Stand is able to hold the Adapter Board, allowing consumers to adjust the monitor to any angle, offering a better user experience. The cost to source the Tri-Stand is a bit higher, as it is strong, reliable, and lighter than other stands I've tested. There are two reward options to choose from for supporting our project: the standard version (UPDATE: ALL GONE!) or the Tri-Stand version.
Planning and Future Projection
I'm aware that the Able-HD is far from perfect. Its main weakness is fragility. There is no external case or box to cover the adapter board. While any LED monitor will break when dropped, the Able-HD might be even more fragile as it does not have an external case to shield it. Improvements must be made in regards to this.
In order to improve the Able-HD, I need funding. Similar to a factory mass producing products, I need a minimum quantity and to cover upfront costs.
We are now ready to mass manufacture, but we need your help. We have mass a production hardware design and have already finished the complete blueprint. The Able-HD prototype has been in beta testing for my personal use for many weeks and will be tested throughout the entirety of the campaign. During this time, we will be receiving quotes from several factories and will need to choose a main vendor. The factory will likely be from China, Taiwan or Korea to keep prices low.
All of funds collected on this site will be used to pay the MOQ (minimum order quantity) required from the factory to do the custom work of my blueprint. To make sure all backers are satisfied, I have already made an arrangement to ship the goods from a Hong Kong third party fulfillment company.
After beta testing is finished, we will decide on a manufacturer. From there, we expect to have the production finished in three weeks. This is very fast compared to other custom mechanical hardware projects. We can do this because the main function of the adapter board is already there. What we done to the board is just some optimizing and tweaking, so it can be more portable and the optimizing also set to focused at mobile gadget such as laptops, smartphones, etc.
Able HD: Best Small Portable HD LCD/LED Monitor for PC and Laptop
The custom design that I've created includes an OS menu and switchboard to adjust brightness, contrast, etc. Below is an example of the tweaking necessary.
Before shipping the Able-HD to all backers, I plan to inspect the first batch of products directly in the factory and will perform extensive tests once it reaches our station in Hong Kong.
However, we do expect revisions to be necessary along the way. I will expect to ship the prototype version to all backers in October.
If the first version is successful, I promise to perfect the next version created. I have already begun planning for the next version of the Able-HD. It will contain an automation feature and be usable the second you open your laptop. But all of these progressions need monetary backing!
We are a start-up organized to invent and design new mechanisms to boost current technology. In the past, I developed other high-tech products such as cable specifically for gamers, ceramic knives and an infrared thermometer. It is in our vision to continue developing new products and gadgets for the future. We won’t stop unless people stop patronizing our products. So please support our project! That way we can continue to invent newer and more helpful products.
We give our promise that our inventions are the best, if not at par with all of the premium products in the market. We are committed to using the best of technologies to create a product that we are proud of. We consider ourselves the best in the market and assure that we will satisfy your needs.

Stretch Goal Update
We continue to be overwhelmed by the awesome support we’ve received in reaching our initial goal and it has motivated us to keep going! We are excited to announce that we have set a stretch goal of $75,000 and we are offering a gift to everyone that helps us get there! We are offering a screen guard for everyone that has already backed us and for those people that will back us in the future. Please note: if you are getting a size 17-inch monitor, you will be eligible to receive a screen guard. However, if you have requested a custom size that is too rare (for example a 15.3”), then we are not able to give a screen guard when the stretch goal is reached. Please leave a comment if you have a question.
Risks and challenges
I currently use the prototype myself in the office, and have found that it works flawlessly. But in order to bring this prototype to the market, there are many challenges--mostly related to resources. But thanks to big LED producers like Samsung, Chi Mei, LG, AUO, Hannstarr, etc., we do not need to worry about LED screen supply and quality. We are able to apply Able-HD technology on all new versions of LED monitors.
One problem with the screen, however, is cost. Another is the lack of external casing for the Able-HD. I am planning to put a PU or an aluminum case on the next version so it has a higher survival rate. I am also still considering the best way to put together the adapter board—combine it with the LED screen or use separate box. Any of your input is highly appreciated on this topic.
I will also try my best to eliminate the need of charger in the next version. I know some monitors can be powered with a USB port, but the drawback is a small and very low resolutions monitor (about 600 pixels).
My biggest goal is to make the Able-HD monitor usable instantly as you open the laptop's lid. I need to brainstorm a way to make the monitor stick together with laptop's screen side by side. However it also need to be easily unattached like a cellphone case. I already found something like this out there, some monitor able to do this but it need an adhesive tape which is sucks (in my opinion).
Moreover, in the future. My ultimate goal is to make an Able-HD set. So that users can work not only from 2 or 3 monitors but a minimum of 4 monitors at once with their laptop.
If you support this campaign, I promise you that I will bring the best HD monitor that you can dream of..
