About

SerialPi5! brings you 5 serial ports on a Raspberry Pi! The idea for this project came about after we worked on several Pi projects requiring a lot of serial comms.  Single serial adapters didn't always work, were power hungry, has messy wires, often required a USB hub - not cool!

The idea for SerialPi5 was born! No running out of on-board USB ports, no messy/bulky wires, no USB hub, We've packed it all on one board and created something perfect for intensive communication tasks. It works with all versions of the Pi - notice the cutout for the video connector of the early Pi's!

Our solution is based on the Future Technologies USB Serial core to create 4 new fully featured RS232 serial ports with the usual DB9 connectors.   We also connect the on-board serial port up - giving 5 serial ports in total! The PCB is mounted with 10 way headers, and we supply header to DB-9 connectors. Sadly connecting to the USB bus isn't glamorous and we make a little wire adapter that plugs into the USB socket. We've made a request to the Pi foundation for future versions of the Pi to give access to the USB bus!

We're quite advanced with the project. We did a prototype already - the photo is the real thing! Our electronic design and the PCB layout was done in-house. The PCB is manufactured in the UK by a company we've known for years. They also do the surface mount assembly for us. We complete the final assembly in house, inspect and test each board individually, and then ship directly to you!

When can you have it? Having done so much prep, we don't have a ton to do once we get funded. The only mistake is already corrected. We have to add the Recognition Rewards names, and it may be good for everyone to incorporate any brilliant suggestions. We'll aim for to be done within 4 weeks; to deliver in late Septembet. We will keep you updated through Kickstarter.

We're excited to offer a Recognition Reward, where the names of 80 backers can have their names immortalised on the silk-screen of the PCB.

We have some stretch-rewards in mind, but to honest we're trying not to get ahead of ourselves. Reaching our funding goal on its own will be fantastic. We can talk about this if it becomes reality. Suggestions welcome :-).

One of the most fantastic things about Kickstarter is the opportunity to get feedback. Our current design has a regulator circuit on - but it does take up real-estate and add a little cost (about £4); if there is massive demand for a smaller board without this, do let us know. That might leave room to mount some DB-9 connectors right on the board. Or maybe we could do a second HAT to provide the DB9 connectors. We could also create RS422/RS485 versions. Or NMEA versions. Please give us feedback here, in your order, or contact us at info@seventhsector.co.uk.

We've included an OEM version of SerialPi5! in the rewards - this gives you a version without our name on it, and without the Recognition Rewards names on it. There is some room for minor customisation of the design, and in the reward we'll deliver 5 fully made boards. If you need greater customisation, are looking for quantity discounts, or want to look at licensing the design, we can discuss once we're funded - just make your interest known in the notes of your order.

We've implemented a highly efficient DC regulator that powers the Pi - allowing it to run on anything from 6-18V DC - perfect for battery operations or in a car, boat, RV, etc.

Risks and challenges

We've tried hard to address any risks and challenges before we kicked off this Kickstarter project.

The most significant thing is we've already had 10 prototypes made! And Hoorah! They work! There are a few things we can improve on, and we'll be happy to get feedback before we order the production versions.

This is also our second project using the same core technology at this density. Our previous project and this prototype has allowed us to refine things with our UK supplier for the PCB manufacturing and surface mount assembly. They're a long-established ISO-9001 registered company that we've known for years. Being in the UK helps too - no major shipping and if needed, we can actually meet - novel in this day and age!!!

If demand from the US/Canada is strong, having lived in both countries for several years, we're also ready with vendors that side of the pond. Bring it on!

I think the key is we're in control of our own destiny so any problems that come up, we can dive right in and sort it out.
