About

Deadly Sins? Going to Hell in a game?
Tell me more!

 Reviewed by Tabletop Gaming News!

"The Seven Deadlies card game takes the things we do (or the things we can think about what we’d do) and brings it to a party near you."

Be the first to get to Hell by collecting at least seven Sin Points before everyone else! You’ll earn Sins by any or all of the following:

  • Committing Deadly Sins through short-answer responses to the Evil Temptation scenario cards and having yours selected by a Devil’s Advocate;
  • Stealing or otherwise coming into possession of others’ Sin Points as directed by certain cards;
  • Disappointing God and incurring his wrathful Divine Intervention (the lightning-bolt-smiting cards), which clearly should be your intent if you’re playing this game in the first place.
  • Eight-sided Dice of Fate;
  • A deck of Evil Temptation and Divine Intervention Cards; Deadly Sins definition cards; Sin Point cards (120 cards total); instructions sheet
  • Number of players: 4-8
  • Average game time: 30-45 minutes.
  • What you’ll need: Paper or notecards and pens/pencils (and a vicious sense of humor!)
  •

To begin the game, each player receives one Sin Point because, thanks to Adam and Eve, we’re all born with the taint of Original Sin, aren’t we? Next, the player with the highest roll of the eight-sided Dice of Fate serves as the first round’s Devil’s Advocate or judge.

Step 1: Each round begins with the Devil’s Advocate drawing a card and reading it aloud. Most cards are Evil Temptations: situations that set up the sin the other players will be “committing” in their short, written responses.

Evil Temptation cards set up the Deadly Sins the other players will need to commit.

Step 2: The Devil’s Advocate then rolls the Dice of Fate to determine which Deadly Sin the players must commit (i.e. the sin of Envy, Lust, etc. See the included Deadly Sins explanation cards for reference.) For “Free Will,” each player chooses which sin to commit.

Step 3: The other players then take 2-3 minutes to write brief, wild/creative/raunchy responses–in an easy-to-read print–and hand them to the player to the immediate right of the Devil’s Advocate to be “confessed” aloud. Dramatic flair is up to the round's Confessor, so have fun verbalizing the sadistic wonders your friends have written!

Step 4: The Devil’s Advocate then picks the best response, thus awarding one Sin Point card to the appropriate player. The round then ends, and gameplay moves onward in clockwise fashion.

It's one thing to stage a game for the sake of a promotional video, but the guys stuck around after the shoot to play on their own. Here's a video of how the Seven Deadlies really plays when there's no script to follow! You might put on headphones if you're catching this at work; the language gets delightfully colorful quickly!

Mingled in the deck are Divine Intervention cards that give God a chance to influence the game through any number of means. You’d think it would be wise to stay on God’s good side in most matters, but... well, you’ll see. Such are the Almighty’s endlessly touted “mysterious ways.”

With so much sinning going on, you know you're going to attract the attention of a "certain Someone."
With so much sinning going on, you know you're going to attract the attention of a "certain Someone."
  • Digital Deadlies: People’s handwriting, in general, often sucks, and it can break the flow of a game when struggling to read what others have written. Never fear! You could use your handy smartphones to write your responses and send them to the round’s reader by whatever messaging service suits your collective fancy.
  • Pure Evil: In order to win, the player must collect at least one Sin Point from each of the Seven Deadly Sins. Granted, this will make the game last longer, but Rome wasn’t burned down in a day. Wait... maybe it was?
  • Speed Sinning: In a time crunch to get to Hell? Instead of rolling the Die of Fate each turn, play a seven-round game of each Deadly Sin. Whoever is in the lead at the end wins!
  • God is Dead: Remove all the Divine Intervention cards from the deck and proceed, you adorable, little atheists.

Want to try the game before you buy? You're in luck!

I've put together a print-and-play Little Devil Deck to give you a feel for how the game plays. Just grab a few friends, an eight-sided dice and get to the sinning!

No dice? No problem! There are plenty of online resources for random number generating, such as www.random.org. Or you can just ask your phone to give you a number between one and eight!

Why create a game based on the Seven Deadly Sins? Well, to answer that, allow me first to reference an obscure and shyly blushing little game some of you might have heard of before: Cards Against Humanity* (CAH).

All kidding aside, this astonishingly successful, gaming juggernaut showed me that casual games work best when they're easy to pick up and play, require very few rules, and don't take themselves seriously. The point of playing a game, after all, should be to have fun, and CAH has unquestionably become a party-game standard over the past few years. I even developed my own expansion deck for CAH to share with friends because my deviant brain, I'm proud to say, is wired for such vulgar hilarity, and I'm fortunate to know many others who share that same vibe.

Creating that CAH expansion deck was loads of fun for me. And the gasps and drink-spraying laughs it's brought out of so many other players over the past couple of years has been its own reward. Out of respect for the creators of CAH, though, I have no intention of selling this expansion. However, I wanted to come up with my own idea that captured the same casual gaming elements I listed above and then bring it to the world to enjoy.

Thus, the Seven Deadlies Game was born!

I chose the concept of sin because I have to believe that most people possess some kind of attachment to or preconceived notion of what it is to do something they know they shouldn't... but they do it anyway. And this devil-made-me-do-it thrill is what I wanted to be at the heart of my game. Giving people a license to come up with wildly inappropriate things to say aloud that, in reality, they'd only entertain in the dark recesses of their beastly minds is what makes a game like this fun to play! And that's what I'm most proud of with the Seven Deadlies Game; there's no "card dumping" or hoping each turn that you'll draw the next kickass, offensive card to score a point in the next round. The "good cards" will all come from you, the players!

To be sure, it's not my intention to offend anyone whose religious sensibilities might lead them to find this game not to their taste. In spite of how popular such games like Cards Against Humanity, Monopoly and even charades might be, they're not for everyone, nor should they be. In one, you're going to jail; in mine, you're going to Hell!

Please become a supporter of the Seven Deadlies Game! It's been such a blast for me to bring it this far! I've enjoyed the numerous game tests over the past year that all helped to shape, refine and enhance it to make it the game I'm wanting to share with you now. I'm very grateful to everyone who helped out in this project and encouraged me to see it to its completion. With your help, I'll make that happen!

Every sin has a story! I'm looking forward to finding out yours!

  • November 2015 // Kickstarter campaign launches
  • November - December 2015 // Promote the Seven Deadlies Game and its Kickstarter at various public venues as well as through social media. During the first week of the Kickstarter campaign, I'll be an exhibitor at the Midwest Gamefest in Overland Park, KS, November 12-15 at the Overland Park Convention Center. Find me there, if you're planning to attend!
  • December 2015 - January 2016 // The Seven Deadlies Game goes into production! (provided the Kickstarter campaign is successful) And, of course, CELEBRATE!
  • January - February 2016 // Shipment of the Seven Deadlies Game to Kickstarter backers begins!
  • Spring 2016 // Facilitate commercial sale of the Seven Deadlies Game through Amazon.com.
  • Unlike other, "concept" based Kickstarter campaigns that ask backers to support the idea of a project that might (or might not) later come into being, The Seven Deadlies Game is a completed, ready-for-production game! Rest assured, if we make our goal, you WILL see the results!
  • How will we use the funds raised by our Kickstarter campaign? Almost half of the budget will pay for getting the cards and the game box printed and assembled. This will be an all-American-made product, too! The other half of the funds will go toward shipping costs and the various rewards tied to the backer levels, and to account for the fees Kickstarter imposes on successful campaigns as well as state and federal taxes. My primary goal is to produce this game and share it with the world, not to pocket the proceeds and vanish.

Risks and challenges

As the game itself is already completed and ready for printing, any pre-production risks should be minimal. Also, the Seven Deadlies Game will be printed in the U.S. by a local printing company in Kansas City, MO. Granted, my opting to print domestically has resulted in a slightly higher price tag. However, I'll have the unique advantage of being closely tied to the entire production cycle from start to finish to ensure everything stays as close to the projected timeline as possible. Cutting out the risks of potential shipment delays from an international printer should hopefully more than justify the differences in cost. After all, the faster I can get your set(s) of the game delivered to your doorstep, the better!

Admittedly, creating the Seven Deadlies videos challenged me, as I'm definitely an inexperienced film maker. To keep our production costs as low as possible and still make our projected Kickstarter launch date, we opted to create the videos with available equipment (i.e. our smartphones) and run with it. I do apologize for the iffy audio quality in certain segments, but I added in closed caption tracks that hopefully help!

Developing the budget for this project certainly proved challenging as well, since there are many moving parts to its promotion, production, delivery and the various fees that are associated with each of these. Shipping charges account for a significant portion of my budget, as it includes not only what deliveries will need to be made to individual backers but also to Amazon for retail sale. The devil is certainly in the details, even for a game designed to get you to Hell!

Depending on how successful the Seven Deadlies Game turns out to be, an additional challenge awaits me in the future: coming up with new cards for you to enjoy! I say, bring it!

Happy sinning! I look forward to keeping you updated along the way!
