SCHMUCK is a 168-page trade paperback autobio graphic novel about one man’s awkward coming-of-age-quest to find love in New York City, written by SETH KUSHNER with design by ERIC SKILLMAN, forward by JONATHAN AMES and art by 22 great cartoonists.
SCHMUCK is my own honest story. I wrote it to shed a brutally honest light on 20-something relationships. Adam Kessler, our “hero,” is based on me – a pop-culture-obsessed photographer torn between pleasing his Mom by finding a “nice Jewish girl,” and figuring out what He really wants. I've been working on this project for years and posting and beta testing at TripCity.net. The book will feature stories not seen in the online version and all the comics have been re-mastered (in many cases colored) and restructured to tell a complete narrative.
SCHMUCK is My story, but I believe it’s also a universal story and it's the tale I HAD to tell.
SCHMUCK is awkward, pathos-filled, extremely schmucky and for adults only. It features frank language and sexuality and it is prone to induce cringing and laughter.
SCHMUCK is an anthology series and features the work of a host of talented artists, who illustrated short schmucky stories, which together tell a complete narrative, including; JOSH NEUFELD (A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge), NICK BERTOZZI (The Salon), DEAN HASPIEL (The Fox), KEVIN COLDEN (The Crow), GREGORY BENTON (B+F), LELAND PURVIS (Resistance), SEAN PRYOR (Pekar Project), BOBBY TIMONY (Night Owls), NOAH VAN SCIVER (The Hypo), OMAR ANGULO (Hurricane Wilma), SHAMUS BEYALE (The Grimm Fairy Tales), RYAN ALEXANDER-TANNER (To Teach), NATHAN SCHREIBER (Power-Out), STEPHAN DESTEFANO (Lucky in Love), GEORGE JURARD (Beacon Lights), GEORGE SCHALL (Dark Horse Presents), TONY SALMONS (Vigilante), JAMES SMITH (Gang of Fools), SKUDS MCKINLEY (Rumble Moon), JONATHAN ALLEN (Vacationland), PIERCE HARGAN, CHRISTA CASSANO (Breakers) and cover art by JOSEPH REMANT (Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland) and book design by Eisner Award winning designer ERIC SKILLMAN (Tales of Sand) and forward by JONATHAN AMES (HBO’s Bored To Death, The Alcoholic).
Influences on SCHMUCK include; Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor, Bob Fingerman’s Minimum Wage, Jonathan Ames and Dean Haspiel’s The Alcoholic, Philip Roth’s Portnoy’s Complaint, Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, works by Nick Hornby, Woody Allen, Adrian Tomine, Jeffrey Brown, Chester Brown and Joe Matt. If you’re a fan of any of the folks or projects I just named, the SCHMUCK is for you.

“While SCHMUCK is packed with humorous anecdotes I feel that the relate-ability of this book is the most powerful aspect of it.” – Justin Fah, Spandexless
““SCHMUCK” drips with self-loathing, near-sightedness, and sexually frustrated Ashkenazi goodness. In “SCHMUCK,” Kushner tells “true” stories based on his own mishaps and mortifying memories, which are energetically illustrated by the cream of the indie comix crop.” - Megan Sass, Heeb Magazine
“…Brutal and honest.” – Brett Schenker, Graphic Policy
“The results for Kushner’s avatar Adam Kessler are stark, dark, humorous, resilient, and persistent, and make Schmuck a narrative with bite as its drama unfolds, speaking to readers on a very personal level of identification in the mad, mad world of looking for a soul-mate."-
Hannah Means-Shannon, Bleeding Cool

Risks and challenges
The Kickstarter for SCHMUCK exists to make my labor of love project a reality. I need your help to make this book come to fruition. By supporting me, you will not only be supporting my personal schmucky endeavor, but also helping to launch HANG DAI Editons, the independent publishing imprint started by myself, DEAN HASPIEL, GREGORY BENTON and JOSH NEUFELD, to publish our signature, creator-owned works, with SCHMUCK being our debut book.
Supporting this Kickstarter will help to create both the Kickstarter exclusive edition of SCHMUCK, which you will be getting (with exclusive cover art by DEAN HASPIEL) and the mass-market edition (with cover art by JOSEPH REMNANT). I will print the exclusive Kickstarter edition only for the folks who back this project. This will be the only way to get this exclusive, limited edition book. It will be printed in the USA on high quality, heavy stock paper and be designed by Eisner Award winning designer ERIC SKILLMAN. This Kickstarter project will also be the only place to get the package rewards offered.
As you can see with the reward tier list, there are several choices on how you can get the book. I will be adding more tier rewards as the pledge drive goes along, as well as stretch goals once the original goal has been funded.
I thank you greatly for supporting my personal project and HANG DAI Editions. I appreciate every pledge amount and take each as a vote of confidence. I promise to deliver the best quality product possible.
Finally, any additional help you can lend to support this campaign by posting, tweeting and spreading the word about this project will be greatly appreciated.
