About this project
The ArchMount is the first pocketable tripod mount for the iPad. It is our creative solution to a need we discovered when trying to record and produce video on the go. Our initial goal was to increase the functionality of the iPad for full video production with a small, lightweight, and convenient tripod mount.
What really sets the ArchMount apart, is that it is pocketable, lightweight, secure and quickly fitted / removed. We are proud that it is all these things, and still sturdy (again, see our video). We worked hard to make it easy to mount and remove, so you can still use your favorite iPad case and quickly swap to the ArchMount and back in just a few seconds. We have also designed the ArchMount to be inexpensive while still capturing the aesthetic of the iPad itself.
The ArchMount is:
• Minimalistic in design
• Small in form factor
• Sturdy and secure
• Stylish, even eye-catching
• Non-abrasive (won’t scratch your iPad)
• Able to attach to any standard 1/4-20 tripod screw mount
When mounted, the ArchMount is barely noticeable from the front, due to its low-profile and well-located clasps, and the back has a sporty modern look. When attached, the Archmount still allows full access to all of the iPad's ports, buttons, mic and cameras. It will attach to any normal (1/4 x 20) tripod mount, and wraps up into a tidy, little package that slides easily into your pocket or gadget bag.
We have endless possibilities for the colors of the ArchMount. This initial run will be a black base with your choice of these three bungee colors (black, red or blue):
In using our prototypes, we have discovered many other situations where a hands-free iPad is useful:
• Capture stable shots of family memories in HD
• Tabletop photo scanning
• Videoconferencing and video-chat
• Monopod-mounted nature shots
• Tripod-mounted time-lapse photography
• Hyper-local journalism
• Indie movie making
• Low light photography
• Sheet music and script reading
• 101 other tabletop uses if mounted on a Gorillapod
(small grasping tripod)
Steve at SerialKickers has been using the current prototype to mount his iPad to a Gorillapod (by Joby) for convenient Skype conversations, and even to clap the iPad to his leg while on his daily bus ride... it's a REAL bumpy ride. Our friend, micbergsma on Youtube is a pro-video blogger, and uses the iPad with a Gorillapod to display scripts while shooting video. We, as well as our friends, have discovered SO many new uses for our iPad now that we have the ArchMount. We'll show you more on our blog at www.SerialKickers.com and as updates here at KickStarter.
For those of you interested specifically in video production, you’ll share our appreciation for being able to record, edit, and submit video without requiring separate computer, camera, and 4G cellular modem. By mounting the iPad to a tripod, we gain the functionality of its high-definition video camera, editing capabilities, and, rapid data uploading – all while keeping a profile not much larger than a magazine.
We believe we have a quality product with our latest design, and are excited to bring this to the attention to the Kickstarter community, who might really appreciate a tripod mount that removes easily and slides into a backpack pocket, maximizing the iPad’s agility while out and about.
We are keeping our funding goal as low as we possibly can. All Kickstarter funding for the ArchMount will allow us to create the tooling, produce a round of injection molded parts, purchase hardware and materials, and cover Kickstarter plus Amazon fees. We look forward to getting these ArchMounts to our Kickstarter friends and giving them an extra special "THANK YOU!" for helping to get this exciting project off the ground.

Endless Possibilities – what will and what could be?
Risks and challenges
Our Experience: Casey at SerialKickers has 17+ years of experience working in manufacturing, most of which was spent in the field of Product Design and Prototyping, working with big names in consumer products like Dell, RIM, AMD, Nintendo and Texas Instruments. Never idle, he's constantly sharpening his skills in CAD and manufacturing design, resulting in a rare ability to take a design from concept to reality.
Aaron has professional experience delivering manufactured items on time, project management of technical projects, intellectual property development, and mitigating risk by developing a corporate quality assurance program.
Steve, has a long background in the technology industry (his first job was a computer sales rep for Apple followed by a rep position for Commodore (does anybody remember them?) He also has a background in audio / video production and journalism. For this project Steve plays the role “the great communicator”, and he will keep you all abreast of our operations on a daily basis, or MORE if need be.
The design for the Archmount prototypes were created, refined and tested using state-of-the-art software, but we have also produced and tested working prototypes using 3D printing or “Additive Manufacturing." The early proof of concept prototypes are gray and can be seen in the pictures and video. The newer, slimmer, studier designs are the ones in black. This production version is capable of being stripped down even smaller or expanded for even greater versatility.
To help with final design refinement and production, we have chosen a leading manufacturer with an engineering branch right here in Austin. This manufacturing branch has ISO 9001 and AS9100 certifications, and generates millions of dollars in revenue each year.
Date of Delivery
We are already familiar with the production process and have been testing our supply chain during prototype builds for half a year now. Our greatest risk for the ArchMount project is that, despite all our practice and precautions, the tooling and production steps may take longer than expected. There could be lead-time issues with the tooling, or perhaps quality issues with the trial molded parts. We have budgeted for these risks in our goal. Because of our experience and intensive research, we feel ready to mitigate any unforeseen delays.
The current design only fits 9-inch tablets. It was designed for the iPad 2, 3 and 4th generation, but can also be adjusted to fit other full sized tablets like the Kindle 8.9, and Asus tablets like Transformer. We are currently working on the designs for a smaller version made to fit thin, 7-inch tablets like the iPad Mini.
Currently the arch and clasps will be black with your choice of bungee (Black, Red, Blue). If we surpass our goal, we will be considering other options, including transparent / smoke color. According to our survey (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/S5P5DK9), right now the Black with Red bungee is the most popular color combo, followed by Grey with Black bungee. If you're looking for something REALLY custom, you should look at the Special Edition version with gold screws or the one-of-a-kind gold plated edition.
The ArchMount can be connect to any 1/4" - 20 screw just as it is. If you have a nice ball mount, you may not need the 90 bracket. If your tripod is a simple one with a mount surface that can only be kept parallel to the ground, you will probably want to spend the extra $5 and get the 90 Bracket... or get it anyway to be safe.
In case we do not make our goal, we will consider a variety of options to make the ArchMount available. These will likely be shorter-run productions, which are more expensive per part, but may get the ArchMount available very quickly! We will post an update here, letting you know how to give us your contact info, so that we may let you know our next steps in making the ArchMount available.
How secure is the ArchMount? We have mounts at my child's school and after a year the iPads just fall out.
Very secure! Now, I probably wouldn't mount my iPad to my scooter and take it down the highway, but if you've watched the end of our video, you'll see me swinging the ArchMounted tripod around like a tennis racket and the iPad doesn't budge. It holds the iPad from all sides, so there is no mounting position that is unsafe.
Yes! We designed the ArchMount so that if a tiny piece broke you wouldn't have to replace the entire unit. Even the bungees are secured behind a plastic door we call "the mustache". You can even use a screw driver to remove "the mustache" and replace the bungees with your own custom set.
