Pixel Galaxy progress:

Over the past few weeks, we've gone back and examined some aspects of what makes this game great, as well as aspects that can be greatly improved. After talking with various game developer friends, looking at reactions from the press, and conducting more playtesting, we've made some great changes that will vastly improve the experience of this game.

You can see some of the changes we've made here:

Although we've decided to cancel this crowdfunding effort, we will continue to work on and improve the game until its launch; because we wanted to have this game made no matter what, we have a backup plan for funding in case Kickstarter didn't work out.

Not only that, but we're proud to announce that Pixel Galaxy is on its way to be on all three major current-gen consoles: PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U! We're at various stages of working with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo on trying to get the game on their consoles, and we'll continue to update you on the progress of each.

If you're still interested in this game, make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or the Pixel Galaxy mailing list.

What do you get when you combine the crazy clump-building of Katamari with the tear-your-hair-out twitch action of Super Hexagon, with a dash of Geometry Wars?

We're making Pixel Galaxy to find out.

You are a white pixel, and you're helpless by yourself. All the other prettier, more popular pixels can shoot bullets or have special powers. But there's one thing you CAN do: Latch onto other pixels and use their powers.

So, you can either be big or small; powerful or nimble. Just remember, every split-second decision could be your last.

Absorbing the powers and bodies of your enemies completely changes the way you play. You'll be experiencing the full effects of turning enemies into friends with the following features:

  • Six difficulty levels, ranging from "easy" to "normalest". All with unique enemy waves and bosses. Don't be fooled by the word "normalest"...
  • Enemy pixels that all have individual characteristics- some are much better for offence than defense, and vice versa. Your worst enemy can become your most powerful weapon in a split second!
  • Waves upon waves of enemies that all move in a specific pattern- it's up to your quick wits, intuition, and memory to survive as long as you can!
Sometimes, a strategic ramming is the key to survival.
Sometimes, a strategic ramming is the key to survival.
  • Bosses with a variety of unique attacks and movement patterns. They'll all be intimidating at first, but they ALL have weaknesses. You'll also get to tackle all bosses one after another in Boss Rush mode.
You can destroy parts of a boss to make survival easier.

THE STORM.
THE STORM.

This game started off as a project in Serenity Forge's internal Summer game jam. When we showed it off at Denver Comic-Con, we realized how much potential the concept had. After reprogramming it and assembling a design team to create even more interesting enemy waves and bosses, we're at a great place in development. What started off as a game-jam consisting of fifteen waves have now bloomed into around four-hundred waves and patterns

Some of the major work left to do in development include:

  • Creating and editing more waves of enemies.
  • Balancing out all six difficulty modes.
  • Introducing more modes: Boss Rush mode, possibly co-op mode.
  • Creating more intricate boss patterns!
  • Continuing to improve the visual effects of the game (Keeping with the rule that everything in the game must be made out of squares!)
  • Creating and refining the original chiptune soundtrack.
  • Optimizing the game so that it'll run great on everything.
  • Porting to consoles.
  • Leaderboards.

Devblogs!

The behind-the-scenes video we have at the top of the page is one of many video development blogs we've created. We've been making devblogs from the day our Creative Director, Z, came up with the idea for Pixel Galaxy. There are over 50 minutes worth of devblogs available to see on Youtube ... so if you're the type of person who loves to see game developers drone on, this is for you :)

The team consists of designers and programmers who are experienced creating unique games. Our first team collaboration was another Kickstarted game, Luna's Wandering Stars, which was released March of this year.

Serenity Forge seeks to create video games that challenge the way you think. We created Pixel Galaxy to make you rethink how you play shoot-em-ups. We thought to ourselves, "Why are the powerups in typical shoot-em-ups separated from enemies? What if the enemies could all become your friends?".

With Pixel Galaxy, we've been conducting external playtesting sessions since the summer of 2014. After getting amazing feedback from attendees at Denver Comic Con, we formed a solid team led by creative director Zhenghua Yang (Z) and lead designer David Forman, along with lead programmer Takumi McAllister.

In addition to needing the funding required to finish all aspects of game development, we're adamant on porting Pixel Galaxy to consoles as well. Our goal is to have it out for the Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One as close to PC/Mac release date as possible.

Other consoles, like PS3, Xbox 360, and Vita are also being considered, but we don't want to make promises to you that we can't keep. That's why we'll only start thinking about them after we go over funding; they will be subsequently added to our stretch goals!

Risks and challenges

Having run a successful Kickstarter campaign for Luna's Wandering Stars, which was released this March, we are confident in our ability to deliver the product that we promise you.

The game's core programming is done, and has been structured so that all of our designers can create and balance out any type of enemy wave patterns they design. We're set up a solid structure for development, with David handling the entire game's balance and fine-tuning, while Z handles the overall direction of the game.

For those of you getting early access to the game, you'll get to experience how much of the game we've already created!
