About

The Idea

The Nocturne Project has a simple goal: Create a compelling and exciting dark fantasy-roleplaying experience in Second Life©.  Tailored to meet the needs of Bloodlines© players, Nocturne will create a world in which vampires, werebeasts, humans, and supernatural characters interact in an ever-evolving story-based game.

We're hard at work building up the necessary resources to bring you an immersive experience in the virtual world inside Second Life.  The story will feature the ongoing struggles of visitors to survive in the post-apocalyptic town of Nocturne, a community formed after the fall of human civilization and its subjugation by Supernaturals.

What IS Nocturne?

After the fall of human civilization a few years from now, the creatures of the night rise up to reclaim Earth for their own.  They have walked among us since the dawn of time, watching as we grew in numbers, wrecked the environment, and destroyed everything in sight.  When we are at our weakest they emerge from the shadows and wage a war of conquest.  Unable to withstand the supernatural onslaught, humanity is overwhelmed by sheer power.

In the time of rebuilding everything begins to revert back to the Middle Ages.  Castles are rebuilt around new villages built up from the ruins of modern cities and towns.  Modern construction mixes with medieval as the new world order solidifies.  One hundred years after the Conquest, vampires, werebeasts, ghosts, demons, and Fae Folk dominate the planet, competing for control as each race seeks to re-establish its own power.  Humans are little more than servants and cattle, with pockets of resistance.

In the mythical European town of Nocturne, a large castle sits atop a hill.  The hill is surrounded by trees, and at the base sits the village.  As a new visitor you find yourself in a strange mix of medieval style houses and the remains of 21st Century buildings.  Technology is still present, however.  Shops sell radios, televisions, and computers, but transportation is more by horse and buggy than the automobile.

Nocturne is ruled by the warlord Draygorn.  Centuries old, he dominates the town as his personal fiefdom.  Though his rule is harsh on human inhabitants, he is nevertheless just and fair.  Draygorn's clan, a motley collection of vampires and werewolves, enforces order in Nocturne.

The Vision

We are confident that Nocturne can entertain, involve its guests and members in terrific role-playing, and provide enjoyment to everyone who loves sci-fi, horror, and fantasy.

On the business side of things, we plan to present and market Nocturne utilizing multiple media and offer returns to creators and investors. A successful venture also will allow us to be able to fund ideas not only to improve the game and the region that will be home to it, but expand activities to include humanitarian causes both inside and outside Second Life.

In short we are confident that we are creating an exciting vehicle that blends the best of creativity and storytelling.

We are absolutely committed to creating something awesome that Second Life residents will enjoy.

Where We Are Now

We have written the back story, rules, and collected many of the building components we will need to create the sim in Second Life.  As the video, recorded by my friend Draygorn (that's his SL handle) using FRAPS demonstrates, with regional windlight settings adjusted the atmosphere takes on a rather spooky tone.  The castle is a prefabricated construction purchased earlier this year and will serve as part of the main action of the game.

We also have a night club in Aquatica region, where we are utilizing that aspect both to help raise money toward our goal and to increase awareness of our team.

The location in-world is here:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Aquatica/220/103/24

Currently we hold themed events Thursday through Sunday, from 6PM to 8PM U.S. Pacific Time.  The nightclub is new, about a week old, but traffic is already ranging between 1,000 and 3,500 depending on the night of the week (weekends usually average higher).

Timeline to Completion

Once we meet our fund-raising goal, it should take less than a month to obtain the region simulator for the game, gather and place all buildings, foliage, props, and roleplaying elements, and begin advertising our presence to the grid.  Orders will be placed with jewelers to craft the rings and necklaces, and writable DVDs, cases, and mailing supplies obtained to ship items to donors.  That will all be completed by November, should we meet our fund-raising goal.

Summary

With engaging roleplay, along with our other assets, we believe that we can get the attention and generate the interest of dedicated role-players and deliver Nocturne's immersive world and experience to the right audiences. We envision interactive game play, retail, and online merchandise, sponsorships, and more.

FAQ

What is Second Life?

Second Life is an online virtual 3D world in which users can interact with each other through the use of avatars.  People who use Second Life approach it from a variety of perspectives, places, and intentions, and make of it what they will.  Many use SL as a social platform for meeting new people, and many even fall in love and become married within Second Life, and sometimes meet and marry outside SL as well.  Many others use Second Life for role-playing purposes, using their creative talent and imaginations to generate story-based RP experiences that evolve over time.  One prominent RP region within SL is Kingdom of Sand, a "1,001 Arabian Nights"-style role-play experience.  Another is Raglan Shire, which was created by a community of SL users and funded via Kickstarter.  The Nocturne Project hopes to create a role-playing experience within Second Life.

What is Bloodlines?

Bloodlines is a system in Second Life that allows users to role-play as vampires, werewolves (called lycans within the system), humans, and combatants.  A full guide to playing it may be found on the web site.  The War aspect of Bloodlines is an easy-to-use combat system that involves a capture-the-flag-style method of achieving status within the game, as well as racking up ranking by way of kills.  The object is to capture a majority of pylons and in turn capture pylon bases, while defending your own from invaders.  Fight to stay alive while capturing as many bases as you can to earn points within the system.

Why Second Life?

Second Life is more than simply a gaming platform.  In fact, it is an opportunity to network with others, form social relationships, and share one's creative vision and content, among its many uses.  It has even been used by nonprofits as an educational tool to reach people in many parts of the real world, and by for-profit corporations as a marketing and networking tool.  As such, Second Life is not limited to only gaming, unlike other platforms such as WoW or The Sims.  As the oldest and most fully developed of the virtual grids available, it has the best potential for fully realizing our vision.

Why is the fund-raising goal so high?

Although it is free to sign up and use, Second Life has its own fully functioning economy, and virtual land on which users may take up virtual residence, build entire mini-communities, and even sell items and virtual real estate as fully established in-world business from which one can potentially earn a real-world living (Nocturne's goal is to create a role-playing experience, not necessarily to earn huge sums of cash).  Linden Lab, the corporation that created and owns Second Life, charges $295.00 USD per month to maintain full-sized simulated islands.  The fund-raising goal was calculated so as to allow us to pay for the role-play region for its first year, with continuing donation drives planned both in-world and off the grid to help pay for it beyond.

What is this "game" about?

As the story description above reveals, Nocturne is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and other supernatural beings have conquered humanity.  Visitors (SL users) create their own characters and develop them for use in the RP.  This is not, however, like D&D, where a game manager oversees game play.  Instead, users create their own characters and stories within the overall narrative of Nocturne, and interact with each other in an evolving process.  This will take place primarily at "ground" level.

A Bloodlines War arena will be set up in the sky for Bloodlines players to use.  Weekly tournaments will be held between competing teams to win prizes, and one-on-one battles can be carried out throughout the week.  Prizes may include in-world cash, Bloodlines items such as casks and prisms (which store the "food" Bloodlines players need to remain active within the system), and in-world gift cards to sponsoring vendors within Second Life.

At "ground" level, in addition to the role-play experience, village houses may be rented out for users who wish to take up long term residence within the virtual region.  A store will provide items for use by visitors and long term residents alike, and a night club will provide entertainment for a set number of nights during the week.
