Secret Unknown Stuff: Escape from Dulce
Fight your way through a base full of human and non-human enemies, as you attempt to traverse the seven nefarious levels of Dulce!
ALL MINI STRETCH GOALS HAVE BEEN UNLOCKED!!
Why? Because The Cow Loves you!!
Welcome to the bizarre and top secret world of 'Escape from Dulce', Sentient Cow Games first installment in our themed anthology board game series called “Secret Unknown Stuff", where the players are taken through science fiction adventures, supernatural stories and unexplained events.
'Escape from Dulce' is a collaborative, turn-based, sci-fi adventure game for 2 to 6 players (this can be played solo but requires that you play as two characters), ages 14 and up. Duration is 45-180 minutes depending on if you play the full campaign or a shorter scenario. The rule book will come with shorter scenario options and the board can be configured in different ways to play them. Players choose from 8 hilariously bizarre prisoners, including a two-headed mutant cow that can strap machine guns on its back, to an alien hybrid super soldier who dreams of being a normal teenager and hanging out at the mall. Each player starts with special abilities and different stats, which they can level up as they try to escape the base. 'Escape from Dulce' will be different each time it's played, because of how the player decides to customize their character, interact with the encounter cards, and how our 'artificial intelligence' combat system dictates how the enemies will focus their attacks. Story based encounter cards add an organic 'role-play' feel to game play, forcing the players to adapt to an ever-changing base full of traps and self-strategizing human and non-human enemies. The game thinks. It's alive. And it’s trying to kill you.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX?
Panda Games Manufacturing will be producing our first run of the game (should we hit our goal) and the incredibly talented Raul Tavares is sculpting our mini figures. Unfortunately he was busy with another project when we first contacted him but we knew he was worth the wait. We will be revealing the other minis as the campaign goes on.
Craig and Weller walk you through game play and a few of the rooms on Dulce Base!
Players can choose from 8 unique characters, such as Raylock, an outcast Grey Alien, or Snippy Von Bell, a two-headed weaponized bovine mutant. Each character has his, her, or it’s own special abilities, and stats that can be upgraded throughout the course of the game as you gain XP and level up. File folders are used to keep track of health, stats, and inventory, as well as equipped weapons, armor and other abilities.
As players make their way through the base, they’ll encounter a variety of enemies, enemy commanders and the dreaded Man in Black, before they can escape to freedom. Each individual enemy has it’s own card that dictates specific attacks or other abilities, and which player character they will target. There is no DM needed to run the enemies.
During your escape attempt, you might come across some potential allies, such as Blurry the Sasquatch, or Sir Reginald the Cleaver, a knight lost in the wrong dungeon. Play your cards right and they might join your little party for a while and help out along the way.
Every time players enter a new room, they draw a random encounter card based on the Act icon shown for that room. There are 4 different Acts, or decks, of Encounter Cards, denoted by Roman numerals in the upper left corner. Encounter Cards provide story elements, possible combat modifiers, and dictate the number and type of enemies encountered based on the number of players and the current alarm level.
Throughout your journey, you’ll find a variety of weapons to help you rid the base of pesky aliens and other atrocities. Weapons are broken down into 5 classes, and not every character can use every type of weapon. The number and type of damage dice are indicated on each weapon card: White dice for Melee weapons, green dice for Ballistic weapons (Pistols and Rifles), blue for Alien weapons, and grey dice for Experimental weapons. In addition to normal damage, some weapons have secondary effects, like completely melting an enemy’s armor!
Just like the weapons, Armor is broken down into 5 types, and not every character can use every type of armor. Armor reduces damage by the number shown on the card, but can be damaged by certain enemy attacks. Some types of armor can also provide your character with additional benefits, such as immunity to Psi attacks, or boosts to certain stats. Snippy Von Bell and the Smith Family can only use Specialized Armor appropriate to their character, as they are a giant two-headed cow and a conjoined nuclear family, respectively.
Special ability microchip implants have been developed over the years at Dulce and allow players to instantly learn and equip new abilities. You’ll find a wide variety of ability implants, that will allow your characters to use weapons or armor they wouldn’t normally be allowed to use, or generate powerful Psi Blasts that ignore an enemy’s armor. Abilities are broken up into 5 classes, and each character can only use certain types.
There are a plethora of strange and wonderful items to be found during your escape attempt. There are First Aid items to heal your characters, Security items to help you keep the Alarm level in check, Tech and Misc. items with a variety of effects, and powerful Artifacts. Any character can use any type of item, but you only have a limited amount of space in your inventory, so choose wisely what you keep and what you discard!
All pieces of the game board will be 2mm press board and will slot together to form the 7 levels of Dulce Base. Once assembled, the board is solid enough to easily support pieces, a beverage or two, and is stable in all but the worst of table quakes! Each piece will be printed on both sides, with alternate layouts of each level on the flip side. The levels can be reconfigured in multiple variations to accommodate the additional scenarios we’ve included in the game manual, or make your own board!
While we discussed lots of stretch goal ideas we realized most of them were already in the game. Therefore we decided to just go with the two big ones. EXTRA MINIS! If we get enough requests for extras we may have overlooked we will add them as the campaign goes on.
Ah, shipping. That much loved Kickstarter topic. In line with many Kickstarter creators before us we have spent many sleepless nights watching shipping numbers dance before our eyes. We have also worked to make shipping as reasonable as possible and are working with several shipping and fulfillment centers to achieve that.
If we have learned one thing it is that we don't like shipping, you don't like shipping, no one likes shipping! It is expensive, often confusing, and can fluctuate day to day based on oil prices and currency rates. Unfortunately shipping is needed and we have decided to use a crazy model of charging what we were quoted for shipping and handling to each region. After watching shipping rates over the last year we're pretty sure we will wind up subsidizing some of it by the time we ship anyway. We know there is no easy answer that pleases everyone so we hope you understand that we are just trying to be fair. With that said, there are some regions and countries that are difficult to ship to due to import laws, customs fees, and high loss rates. If your country is not listed in the shipping drop down menu on the selected pledge or you are aware of these issues in your region and have further questions, please contact us and we will continue to try to find solutions for your area. (If your country is not listed in the drop down menu, please contact us for a rate. The "rest of the world" option on the menu is something I can not remove from the menu and I will work with our shipping partners to provide quotes for regions that were left off their lists)
Play tester feedback:
We beat the first level! Escape from Dulce had me and two strangers passionately discussing gear, combos, strategy, and lizard omelettes. Can't wait for the full game! -Ryan S.
The demo was awesome. I need to play a full campaign next. Samurai + lizard men + grey aliens = a memorable night of gaming. -Mike S.
A few things I love about Escape from Dulce: leveling up mechanic, theme, increasing difficulty mechanic, artwork, player sheets, and equipping stuff. -Dice at Dusk
It's hard to judge a game from it's demo but escape from Dulce was fast-paced and fun. Set up was minimal and would have been even more so with real pieces that will come with the full game. We are interested in seeing the finished product as well as a successful campaign!

Why fund us now? Yes, we are a fledgling game company with an ambitious first offering, but we’ve been developing Escape from Dulce for almost 2 years, and have taken the plunge to create games full time. What started as silly discussions about what kind of game we’d make if we could, turned into us realizing that we had the collective skill set to create a great game that we hope will bring people together to enjoy themselves and make them laugh. While we have funded this project to this point, we don’t have the money as a new company to produce the game without your help. It will not be available at your local game shop, or on Amazon, or anywhere else in the future, unless we meet our Kickstarter goal to get the first run produced. This is the first in the series of many planned games, but we need your help to get Sentient Cow Games moving! If we’ve learned anything from late night infomercials, it’s “Buy now and avoid future regret!”
Risks and challenges
As always the biggest challenge is the unknown. By partnering with well known manufacturing, shipping, and fulfillment companies that have been used successfully by other creators we hope to have eliminated much of that unknown. To eliminate back end delays we have completed our artwork, play tested, stress tested the board, gone through costing rounds with the manufacturer, talked to shippers, and checked the numbers over and over again. As we stated above, the one delay we encountered was waiting for our mini sculptor to be available. We have worked with him though to set a realistic deadline for completion of the sculpts that did not effect our desired shipping date by that much. Our next challenge is hoping, you the backer, likes our project and we can hit our goal. As always, we thank you for at least giving us a look and we hope to be able to share our game with you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
