Sekai Project and Spicy Tails are teaming up to bring the rest of WORLD END ECONOMiCA to the West. Due to episode 1 of WORLD END ECONOMiCA's success on Steam, we would like to localize episodes 2 and 3 of the trilogy so fans can enjoy the entire story, but we need your help!
Spicy Tails completed all episodes of this game in 2013, but it has only been available in Japan and for Windows. Spicy Tails would like Sekai Project to provide a complete professional translation of episodes 2 and 3, and release it on Steam for Windows, OS X, and Linux. We're looking forward to bringing this amazing game to a wider audience!
What is WORLD END ECONOMiCA?
Written by Isuna Hasekura, the author of Spice and Wolf, WORLD END ECONOMiCA is a three part visual novel set in the far future on the moon, 16 years after humans have begun to colonize it. A young boy named Haru has been chasing his wildest dream -- to stand where no man has stood before. To do so he needs capital... a ludicrous amount of capital. What better place to get that much money than by using the stock market?
Who is Spicy Tails?
Spicy Tails is a doujin group formed by some of the best talent in the Japanese anime and game communities. The group was founded in 2011 with the goal to make WORLD END ECONOMiCA a reality. Its main members are:
Isuna Hasekura: Most famous in the West for the Spice and Wolf series of light novels, Hasekura is also the author of the manga Billionaire Girl and Magdala de Nemure. He is the mastermind behind WORLD END ECONOMiCA's engaging economics story.
Isshiki Uwatsuki: Uwatsuki is a freelance doujin artist, and the person responsible for converting Hasekura's brilliant setting into the beautiful scenery and lively characters you see below.
Taira Katou: Katou is a freelance artist specializing in background art. Some of the best examples of his ability can be found in games such as BLAZBLUE -CONTINUUM SHIFT- and Ar Tonelico. All the background art in WORLD END ECONOMiCA is done by Katou.
Ryuuka: This is the guy responsible for the eyecatching opening videos for WORLD END ECONOMiCA. A master of using Adobe After Effects, Ryuuka regularly contributes to the Vocaloid community by helping artists animate their music. He also contributed to the PV for Michie M's "Birthday Song for Miku."
KISHIDA KYOUDAN & THE AKEBOSHI ROCKETS: Formed in 2004, this rock band is most well-known in the doujin community for their Touhou Project music rearrangements. In addition to performing the opening songs for all three episodes of WORLD END ECONOMiCA, their talent can also be heard in the opening of the anime Highschool of the Dead and Strike the Blood.
-PF AUDIO-: Since their debut in 2009, this group has made regular appearances at M3 and Comic Market. The beautiful music heard throughout WORLD END ECONOMiCA is created by its two members, Fuyu and prkr. They also perform the ending song for WORLD END ECONOMiCA episode 3.
Evemoina: Most of the art coloring in WORLD END ECONOMiCA episode 2 and 3 is done by this skilled artist. Evemoina mostly does freelance work and has been hired in the past to contribute her talents for big titles such as STEINS;GATE Senkei Kousoku no Phenogram.
Who is involved in Sekai Project?
We are a startup based in Los Angeles with members across the globe working together on a single goal of getting greater exposure to indie creators. We utilize various social media platforms to connect to both the fans and creators to the content and goals they want.
Raymond Qian: Believing in the vision of joining fans and creators in the Western market, he founded Sekai Project. He has built the foundation of the company on accessibility for all peoples and cultures. As the founder of Sekai Project, he is primarily responsible for the well being of the company's staff, finances, and direction.
Chris Ling: He has worked in the Western anime industry for nearly a decade, building the links necessary for an undertaking as large as Sekai Project. As the co-founder, he uses his experience, wisdom, and finesse to get the job done. Without his help, Sekai Project would not exist today.
Why are we using Kickstarter?
The success of this Kickstarter will help complete the WORLD END ECONOMiCA universe for western fans. Ever since the release of the English version of WORLD END ECONOMiCA episode 1, Spicy Tails has gotten many emails asking for translations of episode 2 and 3 but did not have the time or resources to commission a translation of those episodes. Recently they decided that Kickstarter is the best way to see if there is enough fan support to get episode 2 and 3 finished.
Who are the characters?
What does it look like?
What is the cost breakdown?
Spicy Tails is currently attempting to raise $22,000 USD, which includes localization, editing, and programming costs. The base cost breakdown is as follows:
- $14,000 for translation of both episodes
- $4,000 for editing
- $2,000 for programming work
- $2,000 for Kickstarter and credit card fees
Typical market rates for translation of games from Japanese to English is 10 cents a character, WEE ep2 and 3 totals roughly half a million characters. So at normal market rates it would cost $50,000 to translate. Editing rates is usually half of the cost of translation so that would equal $25,000 to do the editing.
We're still a very small company so we can offer a reduced rate on translations and editing. Everyone involved in this project is willing to make some sacrifices for the greater good of having more Japanese visual novels out for the West.
Regarding the images, the game interface for all 3 games were designed for the original 720p graphics so we have to adjust all the interface to support the newer resolution.
Porting the game to Android is cheaper than porting to Unity because the engine we're currently porting the game to supports Android but not iOS. So if we were to port the game to Unity we would have to redo the entire game script and build a visual novel engine from scratch. Also for that Vita goal we have to pay large licensing fees to Sony and Unity to use the engine on their platform.
What do we get for backing?
$150 - Receive everything in the $99 tier above PLUS a B1-size tapestry featuring one of the designs below. Only backers in this tier will be able to vote on the design when the KickStarter finishes.
Proposed box art
$250 - This is the same as the $150 tier above, but available to a limited number of backers. These lucky few will receive their copy of the game with Isuna Hasekura's signature personalized with their name on the game disc or case.
To help achieve the ultimate $80,000 goal, we're adding more incentives and rewards to the campaign. These can be added on to your existing pledge, simply hit the “Manage Your Pledge” button and add the appropriate amount to it.

Artbook + Short stories - Once we reach $60,000 Spicy Tails will localize the WORLD END ECONOMiCA Official Guidebook. It is 124 pages full of background information about WEE, character designs, rough designs, and interviews. Spicy Tails will also localize the short stories that were set between the different episodes. Every additional $10,000 after $33,000 we'll show more samples from the artbook. All backers from the $45 tier and above will get a digital version of the artbook and short stories. Physical versions will also be available as add-ons once the goal is met.
iOS/Vita - Once we reach $80,000 we will port the game to Unity so WEE can be enjoyed on almost every platform.
Risks and challenges
With over half a million characters between episodes 2 and 3, translating WORLD END ECONOMiCA will be a large undertaking. We'll do our best to ensure that the quality of the translation reflects the amount backers invest in to the Kickstarter.
We hope to have both episodes translated by May of 2015Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
