MAD MANSION - A Tile Laying Game for Two Players
Place Workers and build rooms to construct a MAD MANSION in this fun and challenging new strategy game!
40 years ago, Madison Madly began building her home on a sacred Indian burial ground. To scare away any wayward spirits, she hired construction workers to add new rooms on to her mansion—building 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! She believed that the ghosts would be driven away by the constant noise of the hammers and saws, and as long as the workers kept building, the spirits would stay away. Her scheme worked, and Mrs. Madly never saw a single ghost!
MAD MANSION is a competitive tile-laying game for two players, ages 10 and up.
In the game, each player represents a team of 8 Workers. During the game, players place between one to three tiles per turn to build Hallways, Rooms, and groups of linked rooms called Suites to create an overhead map of the mansion. The Workers who successfully build and complete the most Rooms in the Mansion will win the game!
To score points, players place Workers on the tiles they build to claim Rooms and Suites that are Under Construction. At the end of the game, points are scored for the total number of Rooms claimed by each player... one point each for Rooms that are Under Construction, and two points each for Rooms that have been Completed (meaning that every door in the Room or Suite is connected to a hallway, or all of the rooms are bounded by solid walls.) When all of the available tiles in the game have been placed the game is over and the player with the highest number of points wins. It sounds easy, but look out…this is a contest of strategy and careful planning. Every room you place is important, and there are numerous opportunities to block your opponent's progress while paving the way for your own success.
The game plays in about 30 minutes, and every game is a unique experience as no two Mansion layouts are ever the same!
The theme of MAD MANSION is loosely based on the true story of the Winchester Mystery House, located in San Jose, California, a home built over the course of 40 years by Sarah Winchester.
After her husband's death in 1881, Sarah Winchester inherited more than $20.5 million. She also received nearly 50% ownership in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, giving her an income stream of roughly $1,000 per day, (equivalent to about $23,000 a day today!) This allowed Sarah to fund the construction of her home.
Newspapers from the time claimed that at some point after her husband's death in 1881, Sarah consulted with a medium in Boston. The soothsayer told her that she should leave her home in New Haven, Connecticut and travel West, where she should continuously build a home for herself and the spirits of people who had fallen victim to Winchester rifles. Sarah left New Haven and headed for California, purchasing an unfinished farmhouse in the Santa Clara Valley in 1884. Carpenters were hired and worked on the house day and night until it eventually rose to become a 7 story mansion. She did not use an architect and added on to the building in a haphazard fashion, so the home contains strange features such as doors and stairs that go nowhere, windows in the floor, and other oddities.

If you'd like to play the game ASAP, I've created a print and play file of the game tiles (the front side only.) You'll need a color printer, a sharp x-acto knife (be careful!), four 8 x 10 (appx.) pieces of card stock or matte board, and 4 sheets of inkjet sticker paper. And of course you'll also need 16 meeples or other markers, 8 in red and 8 in yellow (or any colors you prefer.) Here is the PDF file you'll need:
You may also play the game on Tabletop Simulator right now! (Requires purchase of the Tabletop Simulator software from Berserk Games.) Download Steam for your computer, grab a copy of Tabletop Simulator, and follow this link for the MAD MANSION mod. You and a friend can be playing today!
If funding reaches $15,000 I will upgrade the Worker figures to a custom design, featuring a hard hat and a hammer.
Though MAD MANSION was explicitly designed to be a two-player game, the rules will accommodate more players. I've decided to make the 3 and 4 player option a stretch goal. Each new player requires the addition of another 16 game tiles (each with a different color and floor texture), and I'll have to add more Worker figures so that each player has 10 instead of just 8. With 4 players, the game will truly be a MAD experience, as the board will be kind of insane (and will require a bit more table space.) But if you want to give it a try, I can provide the tools to make it happen! If the game reaches $20,000 in funding, I will add the extra pieces to every box.
Would you like more than just one game? Each extra game will cost $20, no matter where you are in the world. I will pay the extra shipping cost.
My goal with Sedentary Games is to create entertaining, innovative, and challenging games—and YOU play a huge role in making that happen! My Kickstarter goal is set at the lowest possible price to print and mail the game. Additional funds will support the production of the Stretch Goals. If I'm fortunate enough to receive additional funding, your generosity will help offset more of my costs and enable me to advertise and distribute MAD MANSION to a much wider audience.
Thank you so much for your support!
Risks and challenges
Any project that involves the printing and packaging of an item overseas, to be delivered on a boat to a port in the U.S., is bound to run into a few delays along the way. Fortunately, I have had many years of experience working with Chinese manufacturers, and have imported many thousands of copies of books and magazines without a hitch. I have long standing relationships with my suppliers, and a proven track record of producing high quality products on time and under budget.
MAD MANSION is completely designed and ready to go to press today, so once the funding is in place we'll be off to the races! I hope you will consider supporting this effort, and with any luck there will be many more games to come!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
