Hi! My name is Sean, and I'm the founder of Wooj. Wooj is a small product design firm focusing on small to mid-scale manufacturing of useful objects. We utilize a combination of traditional woodworking and modern, digitally assisted manufacturing.
For our first product, we want to perfect some of these hybrid techniques, so we're launching with the Wave Knife Rack, a simple, durable, and locally produced knife rack in Brooklyn, New York.
Elegant - We've spent a significant amount of time considering the design, making sure it is simple, straightforward with no superfluous details.
Sustainably Sourced - We are using domestic American ash and walnut, and our design makes the best effort to waste as little material as possible
Durable - Ash and walnut are very durable hardwoods, so you can be certain that it will last and stay useful.
Locally Produced - The rack is produced in our own workshop in Brooklyn, New York, using a combination of CNC machining and careful hand finishing.
The Wave Knife Rack ships with all the necessary hardware to mount it to the wall. A small, printed template will allow you to align everything correctly.
We've spent a long time making sure that this design fits in a variety of interior styles. Whether you live in an urban apartment where space is precious, or a country home, the Wave Knife Rack will fit in.
Walnut has an appealing, chocolatey color. It is a durable hardwood, and will resist nicks and scratches. It is domestic (American) and FSC certified meaning that you can feel comfortable that you are receiving a product which is sustainably sourced.
After the pieces are assembled, they are then finished with a combination of tung oil which brings out the grain and color of the wood, after which they are coated with a polyurethane finish, which provides an important layer of waterproofing and durability. Finally, they are lightly hand rubbed with wax for a final layer of protection and sheen. We are partial to a satin finish, which brings out the color. These finishes are all fully food safe.
The Wave Knife Rack is only the first in a line of products that we hope to produce using our hybrid of traditional and digital methodologies. While a knife rack may not seem like an exciting project to some, it is an important first step for us to test and prove our methodologies on a smaller scale than we intend to arrive at with some of our other products. We are already applying lessons we've learned in this project to some of our upcoming projects (like the Wave Table below) which we are equally excited about.
Risks and challenges
We've carefully budgeted to make sure that we can provide you with the best product possible. We know that people have been let down by unfulfilled Kickstarter projects, and we certainly do not want to be a campaign that does not follow through.
We already have a workshop and all of the tools we need to execute this project. We may have slight errors in our production, but we will not ship those items out to backers. Instead, we will treat those mistakes as valuable learning opportunities (and if not too mangled, as Christmas gifts for our friends and family)
We also want to be accountable to you! By that we mean we intend to post regular updates of our progress with videos for all of the backers who are interested in seeing what goes into a design project like this. We do not anticipate any major production issues. If we have too many orders for our shop to handle on our own, we have a network of other local shops that we can work with to make sure we can fulfill all orders.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
