The Seán Curran Company is commemorating its 15th anniversary with a season at New York City’s Joyce Theater. We hope to raise funds to cover the cost of everything from dancers’ salaries, costumes, lighting design, and to have live musical accompaniment. All support is tax-deductible and we offer wonderful rewards to our donors. Seán Curran Company (Curran Events, Inc.) is a non-profit organization as defined under Section 501(c)(3), and all contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent as allowed by law.
The company’s season will include two premieres:
Fireweather (premiere), choreography by Seán Curran in collaboration with the dancers, music by Charles Wuorinen, lighting design by Joe Doran. This work is a choreographic response to Wuorinen’s score for two pianos entitled “The Mission of Virgil,” inspired by Dante’s Inferno. Fireweather’s eccentric, off-centered virtuosic movement is informed by the literary roots of the music and visual art created around its themes, ranging from the lush, vibrant watercolors of William Blake to the grotesque and vivid engravings of Gustave Doré.
Left Exit (New York City premiere), choreography by Seán Curran in collaboration with the dancers, commissioned score by Jerome Begin (performed by Left Hand Path Ensemble), lighting design by Joe Doran. Left Exit examines spirituality, faith and religion, illuminating the common desire to search for significance and purpose in one’s lfie. For Curran, who was raised a strict Catholic, the subject is both intensely personal and universal. A 40-minute work for nine dancers, Left Exit features spoken word drawn from texts that examine the clash between secular reasoning and organized religion in the modern world.
Help us make this performance happen. We look forward to seeing you at the Joyce January 29 and 31, and February 2, 2013.
Risks and challenges
Running a professional dance company isn't easy; doing it in New York City is especially challenging. Some of our costs are obvious, some may be less so: paying the hardest working dancers in the city, renting rehearsal space, commissioning original costuming, lighting design, visual projections, and musical scores that we hope to have performed live. We are so lucky to be able to work with the most talented, innovative and passionate group of collaborators, and we are ecstatic to realize and share with you the final product of this work. The Seán Curran Company is utilizing kickstarter as a way to reach out beyond the New York dance scene and to ask the community at large to help us commemorate our 15th anniversary. Remember, if we don't reach our goal, we don't receive funding from all of you--our enthusiastic supporters! Please join us and let art do its job. Thanking you in advance,
The Seán Curran Company
