A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

We try to push the principles of open-source development and open data access to an extreme, and guard our independence. This means that we have always been funded through donations. Our first Kickstarter campaigns in 2011 and 2012 were extremely successful, and helped us get our first hardware projects off the ground. Since our initial bGeigie radiation mapping units hit the field in Fukushima in 2011, the system has seen constant upgrades and improvement. The first bulky bGeigies were supplanted by others like the bGeigie Mini, and the bGeigie Nano, released in 2013. All bGeigies measure radiation with a 2" pancake sensor and write GPS-tagged data automatically to an SD card. This makes it easy for users to contribute data they've gathered to the Safecast dataset as open data. BGeigies can be used walking, driving, swimming, in aircraft, and for surface measurements. The bGeigie Nano has an Xbee expansion slot to enable uploads via Bluetooth. The bGeigie Nano has been professionally tested in labs in Japan, Germany and the US, and won the Good Design award in 2013.
The bGeigie Nano is the current workhorse of the Safecast radiation monitoring system, with over 1500 units sold as kits and in use worldwide. If you look at our online map, almost all the data you see there was collected by volunteers using this unit. The Nano is a very stable device, easy and use, and affordable for committed volunteers including citizens, schools, companies, and researchers. However, the time and skill required to build the kit, including soldering, has made some people who want to participate hesitate to take the plunge. This has particularly been the case with younger and senior volunteers.
As our community continues to grow, we’ve recognized the need for something even simpler, to enable more people to participate.
The next gen bGeigie Raku is our solution. Like the bBeigie Nano, it’s also a kit, but adopts a preassembled main board and plug/snap together components and housing to make it possible to assemble without soldering, as well as other improvements such as more processing power and a larger, more legible display, combined with onboard bluetooth to allow measurement uploads through iOS and Android devices. Like the bGeigie Nano, it is easy to hack and expand with a faster CPU and more memory while remaining Arduino-compatible. It has a larger, easy to read display, and settings are easy to configure with a joystick controller, eliminating the need for editing config files. Our first prototypes are very promising, but we need to fund development for another rev of prototypes, writing the firmware, and the manufacturing stage. We'd like to launch this by producing the first 50 units, which will be lent to individuals and groups in low income, poorly covered areas and developing countries to help new Safecast communities there.
In addition to getting the first wave of bGeigie Rakus into the hands of our community (that's you) and our $150k goal will help us with loaner units for many of the open spots on the map below. At a stretch goal of $200k we can double the loaner units we create, and at $300k we can turn some of our volunteer team into paid staff for even faster and more focus development of our hardware and software platforms.
Safecast has a lot of experience developing and delivering hardware, putting sophisticated technology in the hands of volunteers at a much lower cost than through the conventional market process. Nevertheless, as with any development project, particularly open-source hardware, timelines can slip and cost estimates can be exceeded. Sometimes components become suddenly unavailable, or the supply chain experiences glitches. Regardless, we're confident that we can deliver on our promises. In addition, Safecast is extremely transparent and keeps our community informed about what's happening. We're also fully independent and free of any outside commitments that might affect the process or its goals.
