At 20k -1. Map of Gateway! - All backers from $10 and up will recieve a poster-sized Map of the City of Gateway, which will be produced after I have completed the Book of Wizards. It will feature important locations and landmarks mentioned in the book, and will even show where many of the characters from book lived.
The map will be a full-color illustrated map, not just a flat, boring map with straight lines, but lots of interesting details and points of interest.
If you prefer a digital version, that will be an option too. If your pledge level is $10 or $20 and you are outside the US or Canada, please add $5 for shipping.
New Pledge Level- $1250: BECOME one of the wizards in "The Book of Wizards!" Using you (your picture and your biography) as inspiration, I will create a new wizard for inclusion in the book. You will get a copy of the photoshop file, as well as a bunch of prints and copies of the book itself. (Check it out in the rewards section on the right for more details)
What is this?
The Book of Wizards is a book... an illustrated "field guide" to various famous practitioners of magic in a fantasy world called "Gateway". When printed, it will be about 100 pages long, and will have about 65 illustrations or more in it, mostly color, some black and white.
What is Gateway?
A little bit steampunk, a little bit fairy tale, and a big helping of fantasy, Gateway is a vast and wondrous city located in a world that I have been cultivating in my personal work and in my sketchbooks for over a decade now.
Growing up, I loved fantasy... it was my constant obsession and a dream of mine to create and develop my own fantasy world. But I decided that if I was going to do it, it had to present something fresh, something beyond the classic standards we have become familiar with.
Gateway is a lot like our own big cities of note: it is a place where people from every corner of a vast world meet, work, trade, live, fight and die. It is perfectly located at the mouth of a major river to be an important trade hub, but it also happens to be a very sacred place both spiritually and historically. But because this is a fantasy world, Gateway is also a place of intense magic, where lines of deep energy come together to create a nexus of arcane powers. As such, Gateway is the most important place in the known world for learning and practicing the Magical Arts.
During a particularly dark period in the History of the City of Gateway, its leaders decided that unchecked, unrestrained magic usage was becoming a thorn in the side of order and stability. It placed restrictions on the use of magic, rationed it, and made raw, un-filtered, un-registered magic illegal to practice. Over time, it became understood that the motives of "the powers that be" were in fact more sinister, and self-serving, so a protest movement began, and then escalated into a full-scale underground resistance.
"The Book of Wizards" will be written as if it was published during this time, as a protest and to highlight some of Gateway's most revered and accomplished masters of magic, most of which are either now dead, in hiding, or imprisoned by the Gateway Inquisition.
What is the End Product?
A beautifully illustrated, designed and printed book in both trade paperback and a special hardcover edition which will have some sort of special insert page unique to the hardcover. Aside from a physical version of the book, I am going to look into making an e-version available too.
My plan is to complete all of the text and illustrations over the next year, print it, and unveil it at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con.
Is there anyone involved aside from yourself?
Yes, so far there are 2 other major contributors:
Jim Naccarato - My publishing and printing consultant. With 35 years of experience in the publishing industry, including 21 years as a Field Account Manager for Simon and Shuster, Jim has all the right connections and the experience neccessary to help me make a very polished book and to advise me on how to get the book into the hands of people who will love it. Jim has already been a huge help to me in this process and I can't thank him enough.
Josh Siegel - Friend and amazing graphic-designer/artist, Josh will be handling the book design and layout. Josh has been making creative people and institutions look great for over 10 years, having designed material for MoMA, Scholastic, Bank of America, and tons of awesome rock bands including The Bogmen, Jucifer, Vic Thrill, and Camper Van Beethoven. I'm really excited that he agreed to do it, and I think he will do an amazing job designing the book. Check out his website here:
What does the money go toward?
First and foremost it goes to the cost of printing 1000 trade paper-back versions of the book, and 250 special hardcover editions. After that it goes to pay my designers and consultants, and for any additional materials needed to promote the book.
What kind of stuff do I get if I contribute?
Well, take a look to the right. At most pledge levels, you will get a signed copy of the book, at the higher levels, it will be a hardcover edition. At really high levels - original art!
If I exceed my funding goals there are several things I have in mind:
- A larger print run
- A book of sketches from my sketchbook
- An eBook/iPad version of the book
The Book of Sketches
If I meet the $15,000 stretch goal - I will publish a "Book of Sketches", which essentially will be 50 - 60 pages worth of sketches (3-4 sketches per page) pulled right out of my sketchbooks from the past couple of years.
If you follow my sketchblog (http://sketchsam.blogspot.com), you might be familiar with what these sketches look like. My sketchbooks are the place where all of the characters, creatures and locations of Gateway are born, so you will get to see how many of my finished pieces start off! Here is an example page:
If the stretch goal of 15k stretch goal is met, then everyone who pledges or has pledged $50 or more will get a physical copy of "The Book of Sketches" (along with everything else in their pledge reward package), and everyone who pledges or has pledged $10, $20 or $35 will get a PDF version of "The Book of Sketches" (along with everything else in their pledge reward package). If you need clarification on that, let me know.
Thank you, I look forward to hearing from those of you who take interest in the project, and I welcome suggestions and feedback. Thanks!
