The "Shithole" remarks earlier this year were the last straw for us. We're tired of the attacks. We can't just stand by and complain privately anymore. Our way of responding is to channel it into something productive.

Let's redefine "Shitholes" together and let something good come from this latest chapter of ill-advised commentary. The art we showcase will be a deserving tribute to places that are often assailed, ignored, or dismissed.

More About "Shitholes"

"Shitholes" is a one-day only art gallery brought to you by Le Chapeau Project, an organization that curates and organizes ephemeral exhibitions around the world to promote emerging and unknown contemporary artists not often featured in typical galleries.

Founders Fatène Ben-Hamza (currently Casablanca, Morocco) and Steve Garguilo (currently Ciudad Juárez, Mexico), both living in migration frontiers some depict as “shitholes,” want to challenge the current negative narrative spreading across the globe by showcasing the brilliant work of artists from these “shithole” regions.

The exhibit will present contemporary artists from at least 15 countries, including Haiti, Mauritius, Mexico, Morocco, Tanzania and Tunisia. Artists from the United States are also to be expected. Through this exhibit, the audience will get a unique chance to dive into “shitholes” like never before!

“Shitholes” will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States on September 28, 2018. Help us bring "Shitholes" to life in Philadelphia by supporting this dream with $1, $5, $10, any amount will help!

What will this Exhibit be like?

In a word: unique.

This will be much more experiential than a traditional art gallery. In addition to the gallery which will be open all day, in the evening we intend to have a live program with spoken-word art and music.

Nothing is off-limits. The experience will be challenging and educational, but we will also bring a big dose of levity. Appropriate and exciting for all ages!

Why Philadelphia?

Our intention with Le Chapeau Project is to bring various art galleries to different places around the world.

This seemed like an important exhibition for the United States for this moment in time, so we chose Philadelphia because it is "the City of Brotherly Love" as well as the first Capital of the United States as well as the only UNESCO World Heritage City in the United States. (We swear these are the real reasons; it's not because of the Ed Sheeran concert the night before.)

What is Le Chapeau Project?

Established in 2018, Le Chapeau Project curates one-day only art galleries around the world featuring emerging and unknown contemporary artists not often showcased in typical galleries. Monet, Picasso, Míro, Van Gogh. Great guys. We love them. But this is different. This is the vanguard.

Are we into art? Yes? But like most people, we often find ourselves standing in modern art museums wondering what the hell does it all mean. Still, it seems like art remains a language that can transcend boundaries. So here we are, building a new kind of art gallery for curious souls who crave new experiences.

Chapeau is French for “hats” and is commonly used as an expression to say “hats off” to someone for a job well done. We started Le Chapeau Project to take our hats off to remarkable, quirky artists in all corners of the globe. (We also really like to pronounce the word “Chapeau”. Say it with us: “sha-poh”.)

Le Chapeau Project curates and presents art like never before. With our galleries, we promise you culturally rich, fun, and powerful art, as well as novel performances, experiments, and “useless” art that will allow you to engage with something different. Something global. Something bigger than you. Chapeau, artists. Time for the world to experience you in a whole new way.

Our Plan

Over the next few months, we will finalize the plans for "Shitholes" The Exhibit:

March/April/May

  • Art Submissions: We currently have an open submissions process and are accepting submissions from artists through May 31, 2018.
  • Art Research: We are scouring the globe for the very best art and speaking with artists who we'd like to feature.
  • Finalize Venue: We are currently in discussion with a few promising options and will finalize the venue this Spring. It will be announced closer to the date of the Exhibit.

June/July

  • Curation: We will be going through all of our submissions and selecting the right mix of art for the Exhibit.
  • Design: We will be designing the experience including some surprises and interactive elements.

August/September

  • Shipment of Art: Art will be traveling to Philadelphia from various shithole countries.
  • Procurement of Supplies: We will be acquiring everything necessary to set-up the Exhibit.

September 28

  • "Shitholes" The Exhibit

Breakdown of Funds

All proceeds will go to the creation of this exhibition. The primary costs will be:

  • Venue: We are still exploring venues in Philadelphia to find the perfect space. This will be the largest cost.
  • Insurance: It's the law, so we'll have that.
  • Set-up Costs: Picture frames, wall-hanging materials, the little signs that you put next to each piece, rental equipment, and miscellaneous needs for making it real.
  • Art shipment: We will be working with artists from around the world to showcase their art. It would be nice if we could help pay to send it back to them after the exhibit is over.

Why Support Us?

We know that it's a big deal to ask for money, so we promise to be good stewards of your pledges. We have extensive expertise designing, hosting, and curating large-scale events and experiences. We originally met through the TED & TEDx communities, have traveled extensively, and have a genuine appreciation for people and art worldwide.

This exhibition will most definitely be something unique and something worth checking out. We hope many of you will be able to make it to Philadelphia, but if not, we hope to capture as much of the experience digitally as we can so that we can share it with everyone no matter where you are.

Risks and challenges

We will keep our backers updated every step of the way as we finalize a venue. That is the largest variable in the air at the moment.

The shipment of art from all over the world is logistically challenging, but we are confident we will be able to craft an incredible experience out of this vast assortment of pieces.
