We are incredibly excited to announce that Screenland Armour will be expanding into the former flower shop next door! We will be adding two additional screens, a larger lobby and more amenities! As one of Kansas City's only remaining historic theatres, we are thrilled to give our customers more options when it comes to the number of movies we can show at any given time. In addition to more movies and screens, you will be able to relax in a larger lobby area with more food and drink options!
The expansion does come at the high cost of approximately $250k for new projectors, sound systems, theatre build out, seats and labor. So we are asking for your support to help offset some of these large costs.
HISTORY OF THE THEATRE
In 1928, the Armour Theatre was opened as one of the only movie theatres in all of Kansas City, MO. The theatre showed silent films and eventually talkies and sat over 600 customers. On December 25th, 1963 it reopened as the Centre Theatre until 1984 when it became the Paradise theatre. In 2008, Butch Rigby restored the building and reopened it as Screenland Armour as well as adding an additional screen in 2010. In 2013 with the help of you, we went digital! Now, in 2018, 90 years after the original doors opened and 10 years after the renovation, we are expanding our historic theatre to become more competitive and give our customers more entertainment!
WHAT IS THE MONEY GOING TO BE USED FOR?
The project includes opening up the wall between the original Armour lobby and the new space (previously Tanan Floral), two new theatres with seats, flooring, brand new projectors and speakers as well as rebuilding the original bar area to fit the new layout. We anticipate an overall project budget of approximately $250k.
While we have already sought funding from our lenders, for a small business to continue to thrive and remain healthy we are reaching out to our customers to help offset some of the costs by purchasing rewards.
In 2013, new operators Adam Roberts and Brent Miller came into the theatre with an enthusiasm to bring in diverse programming, unique live events and built two popular film festivals (Panic Fest, and Arts and Crafts Fest). While we have enjoyed significant growth over the years as well as being ranked the best reviewed movie theatre in all of KC, we've hit our ceiling. Consistently maxing out our lobby and what we can offer our customers in terms of movie choices, leads us needing to expand so that we can better accommodate and remain competitive.
We hope to keep our screens bright for many more years and appreciate your support!
WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?
What we are asking from you is to help raise a small portion of the projects total budget to offset some costs and in turn give you, our customers much more entertainment. Our rewards are simple, convenient perks for you to enjoy movies, drinks, and food after the project is completed.
WHO ARE WE?
We are two young small business owners of (5+ years) who are passionate about film, food, and beer. We want to create a unique experience in every way possible from our film programming to our menu, nothing goes without considerable thought and attention. We absolutely love this theatre and our community and want to see this theatre thriving and being an integral part for many more years to come.
We truly appreciate your support throughout the last 10 years. It's not easy when you are competing against mega corporations with unlimited funds. This expansion is our solidification that we are here to stay and continue to curate the most eclectic mix of films and events for many more years.
Risks and challenges
The risk of not hitting our goal means we will have to pay 100% out of pocket which tightens our budget and makes it more difficult for us to comfortably move into the future.
Have no fear though, we aren't planning on going anywhere soon! By already being open for business (for 10 years in May!) we believe our risk to be low.
We have the experience of building and opening businesses and know that we can overcome any challenge that is thrown our way. The goal of the kickstarter is to borrow less and in turn keep a healthy bottom line.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
