Help Save The Historic Armour Theatre!
All the Great New Films, Classic Movies such as Psycho, The Shining, Big Lebowski, Rocky Horror, Gone with the Wind, Comedians like Judah Friedlander and the Whitest Kids U' Know, TV and Video Games on the Big Screen and Trivia Nights... GONE. Without the digital projectors to keep our doors open to all the awesomeness that ARMOUR has to provide.
Hollywood is forcing us to upgrade to new digital projection or go dark. Save The Historic Armour Theatre! People of Kansas City, People of the World... Help us Save Our Beautiful Theatre from going dark and upgrade us into Digital Projection! Movie distributors and studios are forcing all movie theatres to upgrade our projectors to digital by mid 2013 or else they will stop providing us with movies to show! As you might imagine, this is very pricey. For two new projectors with new sound systems, we are going to have to spend $110,000. That's a heck of a lot of cash!
All of the major circuits have made a deal with the movie studios for the studios to pay for about 75% of their costs in converting since the studios benefit the most from the conversion to digital. However, the small independents have been left out of the deal, and many will close. NOT the Armour. Not if we have something to say about it.
We have already taken the initial step in securing a loan for our equipment but this is only covering a portion of all the expenses. We are attempting to raise an initial $20,000.00 to help us cover the gap. Of course, at one point, we will have to retire the loan. While the multi-plexes only have to pay about 25% of their costs, we have to raise our funds in non-traditional ways. It is hard to pay $110,000.00 from day to day operations. We do not have the economy of scale of a large, 16 screen box theatre. We set our goal low but are reaching to pay off the entirety of the loan ($110,000 if possible!)
For those of you who don't know what sets us apart from other theatres... We show new and old films, special events such as comedy shows and trivia, have recliners in the front rows, a robot, 80 different beers and more. For more about the history of the theatre watch the above video.
Why go Digital you ask?
* We will be able to get new movies. First run films seen in a beautiful 1928 theatre, yet from the comfort of stadium seating, digital sound and pictures, recliners, (Red leather-hmmmm…wonder where AMC got that idea???) 3-D when the right film comes along. No digital-no more first run, and in many cases, we are not allowed to show classics either.
*Movies won't be scratched, beat up or imperfect. They will be the glorious versions that the filmmakers intended them to be every single time.
*We will also have the capability of showing 3D films. I know, I know many of you (like us) dislike 3D films. But there are some really cool and interesting films that can be incredible in 3D. (Hugo, Cave of Forgotten Dreams)
*The latest dolby digital sound. This is pretty self explanatory but every single film benefits from solid bass and perfect submersion.
*It keeps an old fashioned theatre around for many others to find and relish for many years to come.
So, what's the plan on getting this new digital you ask? This Kickstarter right here. We need YOUR help. Donate. (It’s more like, get a terrific movie package deal!) Tell a friend. Anything to help keep the classic theatre experience alive! . Now, you might ask yourself... "Self... What do they need all this money for?" .. Here is some of the things YOUR contributions will help us purchase.
* Two digital projectors
* An upgraded audio system to deliver digitally produced sound.
* New lenses to display the movie properly on the screen.
* A server to download and store the digital movie content.
* A backup system to keep the server online in case of power failure.
* A new screen and masking to capture the digital images. * The base for the projection system and server.
* Fees to cover the cost of delivery, installation and alignment of this new equipment. Plus the construction fees to widen the projector window for the lens.
We worked really hard on coming up with unique and fun rewards that help those who are helping us. You can see all of these over to the right. So please, help keep the little guys on the screen and not let us fade away!
Risks and challenges
Once funding is completed we will immediately put all funds towards the upgrade process. Unforeseen challenges may arise with compatibility issues and it may drive up the price of the install so the more we can raise the better to offset any unforeseen issues.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
