About this project
We are thrilled to announce that we've reached our funding goal! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for believing in our project—We can't wait to make Fictorum the best it can possibly be!
Fictorum in the Press:
We are stoked to be Greenlit on Steam within 7 days! Thank you for voting!
Fictorum is an action RPG featuring customizable, dynamic spell-casting. You are a powerful wizard of a forbidden magical order, the Fictorum, with the unique ability to shape and master all schools of magic. Stretching the limits of your power, you have survived your own execution at the hands of the Inquisition, a sprawling theocratic empire bent on eradicating all Fictorum. As the last of your kind, you will shatter the Inquisition as vengeance for your exterminated order, as well as anyone else who dares to stand in your path.
Demolish your surroundings with legendary magic: Become the wizard that you’ve always wanted to play—Wield awe-inspiring magic with explosive impacts that will send your enemies flying and shatter structures into rubble with a single, well-placed spell.
Dynamically improve your spells with our spell-shaping system: Shape a spell towards any of the available runes to amplify specific properties of any spell. Mastering this system will allow you to turn a fireball into a high-explosive cluster bomb, or a basic ice blast into a leaping ball of frozen doom! And these customizations aren’t set—you can constantly reconfigure your runesets and spells.
Traverse a world shattered by magic on your mission of vengeance: Progress through our randomly-generated world map, as you search for the Grand Inquisitor, to avenge your massacred order. Conflict is rampant throughout the world, and many locations have difficult choices to make—will you choose to fight your way through a fortified town, potentially finding new equipment, or will you take the path of least resistance, saving your strength for the battles to come? Do you investigate a local execution or use the opportunity to loot valuables in the nearby town? The choice is yours.
Find powerful items and new spells to increase your immense power: Each location has opportunities for encountering new spells and equipment that increase your magical potency and keep you safe. You can also trade magical essence that you find for new equipment, or use it to enchant the armor, spells, or runes that you already possess, further enhancing your capabilities.
Discover the impact that you left on the world: Once your journey is over, your story is retold by the Chronicler Santheocles. Judging from your actions and choices, your exploits are cataloged, and titles are awarded according to your worth and skills. Were you well-known for your prowess in fire magic and duly titled “The Inferno?” Perhaps you took a few too many arrows in your quest, and are appropriately given the moniker “The Pincushion.” Depending on the outcome, obtaining a new title may unlock a new starting title for your next playthrough, granting you access to a new loadout of items and abilities!
Centuries ago, rival magical orders struggled for supremacy and control over the realm. A magician within an order would study most of their life to master just a single school of magic. After decades of combat on the battlefield and in the great courts, a clear power emerged: the Fictorum, born with the talent to master all offensive schools of magic. Threatened by their supremacy, the individual orders banded together to overcome the Fictorum. Battered by overwhelming numbers, the Fictorum dwindled and were nearly defeated until...
The Great Cataclysm: an elite of the Fictorum order used his powers to envelop the world in shadow; a crippling Miasma with the capability to corrupt all it touches. Millions fell. Though his efforts were effective, humanity endured—at the highest points of the world where the choking fog cannot reach. The surviving group of magical orders, now calling themselves the Inquisition, worked together to hunt down the remaining Fictorum to prevent this incredible power from ever being used again. They built magical nexuses in the dormant ley-line network spreading across the land, providing survivors transport between the mountaintops. Using these nexuses, humanity built settlements and eventually, entire civilizations perched on the crown of the world. All the while, the Inquisition remained vigilant for traces of the Fictorum.
You and a handful of others were the last of the surviving line. Without the lust for destruction some of your predecessors possessed, you spent your life up to this point studying with the Fictorum on the deadly outskirts of the ley-line network, where the Inquisition dare not tread. Your studies passed without much incident until recently; storms with surges of the Miasma occurred more and more frequently, bringing with it terrible, twisted creatures that challenge even your own considerable powers. As the frequency of these storms increased, you and the others of your order abandoned your home in search of safety and, after a time, were captured by the Inquisition. Though your elders explained that they meant no harm and pleaded to be taken to the Grand Inquisitor to explain the new threats of the storms, they were executed by the army sent to dispatch you. Helpless, you were forced to watch as your friends, colleagues, and family were slaughtered before you. As the last Fictorum awaiting execution, those that found you thought it a fitting end to force you to walk into the corrupted Miasma that the First had caused.
Stretching the limits of your power, you somehow survived, but your body became warped with corruption. Though previously young, you have aged decades. Your mind flickers with the horrors you saw above and within the depths of the mist.
The Inquisition is responsible for what happened to you and your order. Since they will not listen, they will burn for what they have done.
Plus the great work we receive from our contractors:
Rainfall Films has created our sound effects, music, and user-interface artwork.
Azima Khan is our 3D character modeler and painter.
The Social Stage has been our guiding light in all things Social Media.
We strongly believe in our project, and that's why we have worked hard, putting in many hours and using our own money to finish the core systems of Fictorum so that we can share it with the gaming community. Now, we need to spend the next year polishing and filling our world with content and artwork (environmental, characters, and animations, specifically).
That's why we need you, not only for your backing to help make our dreams a reality, but for the invaluable feedback that you will provide as players. Help us create the world of Fictorum!
Risks and challenges
With all of our core systems complete and working in-game, the biggest risk that Fictorum faces is that it is delayed due to technical or artistic reasons. However, we have made great strides to keep our game focused on its original intent and to fend off feature creep so that we can release on time. We are very committed to seeing Fictorum and it will be finished. With your help we can make Fictorum as great as it can be!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
For now, we are concentrating on a Windows PC release. We would like to make a release for Mac, Linux, and consoles, but we don’t want to make any promises.
Recommended System Requirements:
-Microsoft Windows 7, 8, or 10 64 bit
-Core i5, equivalent or better
-nVidia GTX 760, equivalent or better
-*Fictorum is currently best viewed in a 16×9 resolution.
Whoa there, keep your pants on. We will be sending out alpha copies to appropriate backer tiers very shortly after Kickstarter completion, if not immediately afterwards. Release copies will most likely be sent out via Steam/GoG/IndieGameStand keys.
Yes, from some of our vendors.
Only English at this point in time. Depending on funding/interest from our community, we’d absolutely consider translations.
You bet your robe and wizard hat you can! Information is available here: http://www.fictorum.com/blog/alpha-details/
Unreal Engine 4.
We have no plans to support that currently, but don’t take that as a hard no.
Long Answer: Our focus is making a game about spell-casting that feels ridiculously powerful. We don’t want to be restricted in the design of our game by ruling out spells and abilities that would be overpowered in multiplayer, so for now, we are only focusing on a single-player experience.
While we would friggin’ love to include that, Chip and Greg signed a blood pact to solely focus on completing the game for the time being and develop [read: play] with VR/LeapMotion afterwards.
The key you receive for the alpha copy of the game will become a release-copy version of the game at release. The alpha copy will be updated throughout development of the game.
Here's what we have planned:
-Character name selection
-Character title selection
-Skin/hair color selection
-Wearable components on the character
Completely conditional to funding:
-Additional male/female models (very unlikely)
