Hi, my name is Joe. I am the owner of Scout Leather Co. This Kickstarter project is to help fund the production of my first Hard Goods design: The Scout Hook™ Keychain Bottle Opener.
Based in Mountain View, CA, Scout Leather Co. creates essential products designed from necessity and personal experience. Using traditional methods with a modern approach, all Soft Leather Hard Goods™ are proudly Made in USA.
DESIGN & PROCESS
Inspired by the Japanese brass fishhook, the Scout Hook was designed with the inclusion of an inconspicuous bottle opener. It was created as an elegant addition to your everyday carry.
From my original concept sketches to the first few prototypes I hand cut out on the bandsaw, the Scout Hook has gone through a lot of iterations to arrive at what it is today. I have made a few small batches of hooks in order to test and continuously improve the design and production method. With the excellent feedback received, I am now ready to take the Scout Hook to full production with your help.
MATERIALS & FINISHES
The Scout Hook is made from 0.25” thick brass. Brass was chosen for a few reasons: it has a warm gold color that adds to the natural form and beauty of the hook, it has a heavier weight that gives it a solid feel, and it is strong which makes it durable but malleable enough to let dings and nicks add character through use.
The Scout Hook comes in two finishes. The first is a Stonewashed Brass finish and the second is a bright Nickel Plated finish. Expect both finishes to patina and darken with use.
The Scout Hook includes a hand punched and stamped leather fob made from natural horse leather that darkens and ages beautifully over time. It is attached by a custom made brass jump ring which is finished to match the hook.
The real beauty of the Scout Hook is the simplicity in its function. It was created as an unobtrusive and elegant addition to your everyday carry. By eliminating the need to add an extra dedicated bottle opener to your keys, the Scout Hook helps minimize the bulk to just the essentials with its slim form, measuring ~ 2.75” L x 0.67” W x 0.25” H.
The Scout Hook can be used in multiple ways for easy access to your keys so there is no more digging around for them. Hook it on your belt or belt loop for easy on, easy off. Hook it inside your pocket or even inside your bag. I have even hooked it on my gym shorts waistband when there were no pockets.
Now let us talk about the bottle opener function of the Scout Hook. Some of you may ask, “Wait, what bottle opener?” I get a chuckle when that happens and then point out the inconspicuous bottle opener built into the hook. I take pride in the fact that the opener part does not stand out since it was the hardest part to design. It needed to have the right geometry and leverage to easily open bottles while not taking away from the natural flow of the hook. I can honestly say after a few revisions and countless bottles of Cokes, I am very happy with how well it works.

EXCLUSIVE & REWARDS
In addition to the Scout Hook, I am excited to offer another great item to add to your everyday carry. From another Kickstarter project, I have worked with Jason of Prometheus Lights to offer a Scout Leather Co. exclusive Beta-QR Keychain Flashlight. I have been carrying one on my keychain since its release and I can say it does live up to its goal of being “the best keychain flashlight on Earth.”
The Scout Leather Co. exclusive Beta-QR will feature:
- Solid Brass body to match the Scout Hook
- State of the art Nichia 219 High CRI LED
- 3 mode driver (1/15/85 Lumens)
- New improved Brass Quick Release v2
- Uses 1x AAA Battery (Not Included)
The new Quick Release v2 simply pushes to connect and pulls to disconnect. It uses a proprietary "canted coil spring" to provide a "snap together" action.
Please note: The Beta-QR will be manufactured in China to the highest quality and standards of Prometheus Lights.
It may seem confusing with all the different reward tiers to pledge, but simply there are just three types of rewards to choose from:
- Stonewashed Brass Scout Hook
- Nickel Plated Brass Scout Hook
- Brass Beta-QR Flashlight
The different tiers of the same reward reflect the delivery dates, as they are staggered for production reasons. As they say, the early bird gets the worm, so the first 100 backers for each the Stonewashed Brass and Nickel Plated hooks will have first batch delivery and an “Early Bird Special” pricing. The first 150 backers of the “Hook Sets” will also receive the same deal. From there, please see each reward tier for the estimated delivery date. As each subsequent tier fills up, a new one will be added with the next delivery date. For more information on “Production & Delivery,” please see the corresponding section below.

I wish to thank the following people for their contribution to this project; John, for designing the Scout Leather Co. logos; Jo, for vectorizing my original concept sketches; Lucas, for creating the first batch of prototypes; Crystal, for teaching me a new way to think in design; Jason, for imparting his knowledge and guiding me throughout this whole project; Chris, Frances and Jon for making sure my words and thoughts make sense.
Special thanks to everyone that already owns a Scout Hook and to those that have pledged. This project would not be possible without your support. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
I have done my best to schedule production and delivery dates based on my experience with previous batches of Hooks I have made. As with anything in life, unexpected occurrences may delay production or delivery. If that happens, I will update the project with a new schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
