A year in the works, I am excited to finally announce the launch of the Scout Tools line of Hard Goods from Scout Leather Co. In this project, I’d like to introduce the Scout Compact Utility Blade. Designed from personal shop life necessity and developed for those that work and do, the Scout CUB is a minimalistic everyday carry pocket tool with just the essentials. It features a one-handed push button retractable blade using standard utility blades that are easily replaceable without any extra tools.
Not much bigger than the utility blade it uses, the Scout CUB’s compact size easily fits in your coin pocket or attaches with the optional pocket clip for quick access. With the push button retractable blade design, it is ready to use with only one hand. There is no more fumbling in your pockets to find it and it doesn’t require both hands to use.
FORM FOLLOWS FORM
Instead of packing in a bunch of extra features found on other pocket tools, the Scout CUB was designed to be minimal and compact. It was created with just the essentials for shop life and developed for those that work and do.
From opening and breaking down boxes to tightening down screws, or even prying open cans and popping the occasional cold beverage for lunch, the Scout CUB makes a great pocket tool for everyday carry.

REPLACEABLE UTILITY BLADES
The Scout CUB uses “Stanley Classic 1992” style utility blades which are easily replaceable without any extra tools. By fully pressing down on the Push Button while in the forward position, you can remove the blade and switch it with a new one.
- Stanley 11-921A Classic 1992
- Stanley 11-700A FatMax
- Stanley 11-800L Carbide
- LENOX Gold
- IRWIN Bi-Metal
The biggest challenge with the Scout CUB was creating the mechanism for one-handed use. Add to that the compact size dimensions and being able to efficiently machine it, I ended up designing a Push Button and Slide Lock Safety Mechanism.
The Push Button may be the most important part of the Scout CUB design. Not only does it hold the blade in place, it also allows the blade to stay in the open and closed position by using the force applied by the natural spring tension of the Titanium Lockbar Spring.
HEX BIT DRIVER
In developing the Scout CUB, I found myself constantly assembling and disassembling all the prototypes for testing. This led to creating my own tool with the Hex Bit Driver. Fitted with a bronze cage bearing and broached with a magnet, it uses ¼” hex bits to quickly allow you to do your work.
With your support, I hope to turn my original proof of concept into a run of production Scout Compact Utility Blades made here in the USA. Additionally, with your help I would be able to set up a run of Hex Bit Drivers to be machined on the CNC instead of hand turning each one on the lathe.
MADE IN USA
The Scout CUB will be precision CNC machined from Grade 5 (Ti6Al4V) Titanium and will feature a proprietary Blasted & Spinned finish. The Push Button will be machined from Brass for its self-lubricating properties. The optional Pocket Clip will also be made from Titanium.
Manufacturing will take place in Mountain View, California. Normally it would be done in-house at the Prometheus Lights shop but we’ve been busy running another Kickstarter project for the BRNLY SlingPop. Instead, a neighboring machine shop that helped prototype and develop the Scout CUB will be handling machining duties. Afterwards, each one will be finished and assembled by hand back in-house by yours truly.

Risks and challenges
I have done my best to schedule production and delivery dates based on estimates. Unexpected occurrences may delay production or delivery. If that happens, I will update the project with a new schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
