Do you ever wish you were a 16th century European nobleman (or noblewoman) able to commission flattering portraits of yourself amongst your riches and prized possessions? Well, we can't help you with the riches, but we can offer you a commissioned portrait in the form of an original oil painting of yourself (or a friend or loved one).
Our goal is twofold: first, to make beautiful yet affordable portraits available to anyone and everyone (not just nobility); and second, to incorporate this collection of paintings into a colorful and diverse collage of faces.
The portraits aren't those factory produced, 100% accurate, photo-like portraits that you can order online. These are small, interpretive, stylistic portraits with personality that would be ideal for wall decorations, gifts, profile pictures, or memorials to loved ones who have passed. They are done on canvas panels of three standard sizes (5x7, 8x10 or 11x14) so that they may be easily and inexpensively framed.
The collage will be used in postcards and online venues as a celebration of human diversity, unity and creativity. The size of the collage will be determined by the total number of paintings commissioned; our project goal is enough to make a collage with at least 9 paintings but it would be wonderful if it were a much more sizable compilation and resulting collage, or possibly even enough to make multiple collages. The end-result will depend entirely on the number, style and colors of the individual portraits, but the layout of the collage will likely be tiled. We've made a very rough draft with the few paintings we have just to show the basic concept.
When choosing a photo for us to work from, keep in mind than an ideal photo for a yearbook or profile picture (i.e. straight on, smiling) may not necessarily be the kind of photo that would translate well to a painting. While headshot-like pictures work, those with slightly more creative poses or interesting backgrounds are encouraged, as long as they are still fairly close-up. Once the project reaches its funding goal, we will contact you and ask you to send a selection of three or more photos, and we’ll choose the one most conducive to an interesting painting.
And of course, if you have any questions whatsoever, don't hesitate to contact us!
P.S. Wendi's father also has a Kickstarter project going (such a creative family), so you should definitely check that out! And if you're considering supporting only one or the other, keep in mind that his is a once-in-a-blue-moon sort of endeavor, whereas we are likely to do another project like this one in the future. So if you have to pick, help out Bob this time!
