Shadow Holmes is a children's book designed around one simple mechanic: readers use small shadow puppets that come with the book to complete images in the mystery story. For example, this image shows how the missing fountain in the city park is completed with the shadow puppet clue:
Objects in the city park have been stolen by the Shadow's nemesis, a pigeon duo named Morty & Arty (obviously inspired by the great nemesis of Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty).
Morty & Arty have hidden the objects somewhere in the park, and it's up to Shadow and the reader to figure out where they are. Along with each shadow clue is a rhyming note (hand scratched by the pigeons) that leaves a blank for the name of the object.
Our collaborative development of this project for over a year has consisted of many iterations on the story, artwork, layout, character development, branding, play mechanics with the shadow puppets, and play testing with kids. We are very excited to share this book with the world, and hope it will be the first in a series of many more Shadow Holmes mysteries!
Here are just a few images showing our first tests of this shadow mechanic and some style development of the book. (Disclaimer: there are no elephants in this story, this image was merely used as one of our shadow puppet tests!)
Where is your money going?
We are prepared to make a bulk order of books and laser-cut shadow puppets that will be included in a small envelope at the front of each book. We also want to spread the word about this book in the year ahead and will allocate some of the funds toward social media marketing and entry to various independent book festivals.
Specs: Our most current version of the finished draft is 35 pages consisting of artwork on every page, and text on nearly every page. Shadow Holmes is presented in classic black and white, each first version of the book will measure 8 by 10 inches. The included shadow puppet "clue pieces" will be laser cut, each about 1.5 inches in height, and color remains TBD.

It is with humble gratitude that we offer heartfelt thanks for your support of this project through contributions or sharing to your networks, especially to parents with young readers, or folks looking to make a meaningful gift purchase! The support will help tremendously as we endeavor to further develop and cultivate Shadow Holmes into the future.
Risks and challenges
We recognize that crowd-funded projects often carry red flags in terms of reliability and promised delivery of rewards. We have taken every effort to polish this project and plan to order every single reward the day after receiving funds from the funded project, with shipping to follow in the days after the books arrive to us. Should any unforeseen consequences arise we will make every effort to be fully transparent in communicating delays, but we are confident that we will be able to deliver on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
