I felt like I was not being as good of a dad as I could, I felt guilty. Now, I'm doing something about it! Read more

About this project
- Problem: I felt like I was not being as good of a dad as I could, I felt guilty. My work was important and fulfilling, but I was failing as a parent.
- Solution: Mobile technology, an app that lets you read to your kids no matter where you are and no matter where they are.
- In exchange for your early support you will be part of building the solution, gain early access, and most important, help bring a new way to connect to families.
# THE SOLUTION
My Dad Reads to Me is my way of capturing the storytelling magic. We are creating a way to record your voice, synched with the digital book, and stored in the cloud. This is a virtual reading room. Your son and/or daughter will be able to access these recordings (and associated books) wherever they have Internet access.
My Dad Reads to Me is for anyone who has kids in their life who they love and cherish: grandparents who have far away grandchildren, aunts and uncles who live the next state over or in another country, geographically split families who just want to maintain some normalcy.
# The Inspiration
The seed of inspiration for this concept started years ago. Prior to my military deployments, I recorded DVDs of myself reading books for my son.
The last few years have brought about cloud computing, the iPad and mobile platforms and the ability to communicate much more freely than ever before. One roadblock in all of my more recent travels has still been the timezone problem. Bedtime on the East Coast, falls during an important meeting on the West Coast, so you miss bedtime again. Being able to record your voice facilitates interaction on your child's schedule.
We are creating My Dad Reads to Me in order to maintain the connection with our kids even when we can't be there with them. If successful, the result of this project will be a app that allows moms, dads, grandparents and the VIPs of a child’s life to read to him or her every night - no matter the physical distance or time zones.
# JOIN IN
With your support and participation we can bring My Dad Reads to Me to life. You get to be involved in the very early functional prototypes and read from the road. You also get to be instrumental in what features become part of the more mature Reading Room.
I hope you will take the opportunity to support this project. I am working very hard to make sure that you will be happy you did. Imaging the smile and happiness it will bring to your special kid, when they hear YOUR voice reading to them.
# WHO ARE WE?
The team building the virtual reading room is comprised of three people with a common enjoyment of solving problems.
- Scott Warren : I am a husband and father to a 9 year old and a 1 year old. I am an entrepreneur (or at the very least I am trying my best to earn that title). I spent 12 years in US Military Special Operations and had multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was awarded a Purple Heart and a Silver Star. I have an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management. I am the founder of My Dad Reads to Me and the project lead on the Kickstarter campaign, marketing, fundraising, and product design.
# Version 0.5.
Version 0.5 will offer recordable books that are sent with a simple link to family or loved ones. This will be simple to use and record and will get a usable product to your hands as soon as possible. We will use V.0.5 to work out kinks in the system before moving to the more robust V.1.
# Version 1.
Version 1 will be similar to Version 0.5 except it will add user accounts and a child access gate. You will be able to log in an see the available books as well as books you have already recorded. Your designated child will have an access point to get to the books you identify as for that child.
Both V0.5 and V1 are part of the minimum goal for this Kickstarter campaign. This will provide a wonderful user experience on Ipad devices. The focus is on Ipad because it is the most child friendly device to build on.
Stretch Goal 1:+$4000 (above min.goal)
Stretch Goal 1 is to build this application so it will function OFFLINE. What this means is that a user (adult side) will be able to record a book and locally store the voice/book combo until Internet is available. Once Internet is available the device will sync with your account in the cloud.
The child side user will be able to locally download and store the book./voice recording. So your child will have access even WITHOUT Internet.
* Stretch Goal 2:+$6000 (above stretch goal 1)
Super mobile: Stretch goal 2 is to build the application for use on Iphone/Ipod. This requires a lot of additional development, but the advantages are obvious.
Stretch Goal 3:(Lets get past the minimum +1+2 and then we can discuss Android)
Complete Android development. Rebuild everything for Android.
Risks and challenges
Once the project is up and running we will actively seek out relationships with major publishers, so we can deliver the more well known and famous books that so many of us have loved for years. We understand that the longer term success and growth of My Dad Reads to Me hinges on making sure we have the best titles available for all of you to share with your kids and grandkids.
I am adding funds to the campaign request to produce a number of children's books from new and up and coming authors and illustrators. The books will be fresh and available with no digital rights management. I am really enjoying supporting these writers in artists in making their dreams happen too.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
