Update!  Our game won the "Innovative Solution" trophy at the FIRST Lego League VA-DC Regional Championship!  The judges liked how our game answers the question "How do we make learning math more fun for kids?"

Hi, I'm Alex.

I have always liked making up games, because I grew up playing cool games like Settlers of Catan and Carrcassone.  This year's First Lego League topic is World Class Education.  After my team learned about how Learning Styles impact education, I wanted to make a game that would make it easier for kids to learn math by engaging multiple learning styles.

Math! Leave Them Kids Alone! Game (Standard deck will have a nature scene voted on by backers.)
Math! Leave Them Kids Alone! Game (Standard deck will have a nature scene voted on by backers.)

Our game incorporates Learning Styles in the following ways:

  • Social:  The game make math fun because you are playing it with other people.
  • Visual:  While looking at the numbers, and there are visual cues on the cards to remind you about things like even/odd, powers of 2, squares, cubes, primes, and even the Fibonacci series!  There are also dice showing, because the dots help some people make the connection between the abstract number and the quantity that it represents.  Some of the cards even represent Roman numerals.
  • Auditory/Verbal:  To make matches, you need to say an equation that uses the numbers on the board.  You will also be listening to other players make their equations.
  • Logical/Mathematical:  There are strategic elements in the game that make some goal cards more valuable than other goal cards.  This keeps your logical side engaged.

To publish and ship 100 copies of the game, we need to raise at least $1200.  We are going to do that by giving a copy of the game to each person who pledges at least $15.  There are even cooler rewards for people who pledge more.  All games come in the cool tin box like shown in the pictures.

Please go watch our new video and let us explain how to play the game!

Since we won the local Championship, we have printed 30 copies of the game with our Robot on the back.  We used some of these to demonstrate the game at the VA-DC FLL Championship, but there are a few available for backers.  Notice the larger sized dice in the picture, which will go on the standard edition of the game as well.  This is the same edition which was used to win the First Lego League VA-DC project trophy for "Innovative Solution".

Risks and challenges

We will continue to use MakePlayingCards.com, and they have been in the printing business for over 30 years. If we had to switch suppliers, that would probably take longer, and it might cost more. We are comfortable using them because they make lots of playing cards and other game components, and because we really liked the quality of the 32 copies of the game we had them print for playtesting.

We might find a problem with the name of our game "Math! Leave Them Kids Alone!", but if we do, we will just change the name to something else.

We are expecting to send out hundreds of packages of cards to our supporters. If it turns out to be thousands of copies, our schoolwork might get in the way, and we might have to work with a fulfillment center. That would be a lot easier, but getting it all set up might take additional time. We think we have plenty of time built into the schedule, but it could cause a delay.

We have never shipped packages overseas, and we would be figuring out how to do that as we go along. That's why it is so expensive, but it would be really cool to get foreign orders, so please don't let that stop you.

Scott Walker (not the governor!) is the adult helping us to handle details with the funding and printing.
