Musician, artist, punk rocker and... acoustic instrumental songwriter? ...yep! - Welcome to the 'Never End the Rocket Century' Kickstarter!
Scott Helland's new CD project is underway. YOU can help get his music out into the world. 'Never End the Rocket Century', is an amalgamation of his eclectic musical influences and personal creative expression. Armed with his trademark Godin Multiac guitar, Helland has created a musical world of his own influenced by punk rock, spanish and celtic guitar styles.
At the age of 12, after being exposed to the punk scene, Scott knew he would be a musician and has since devoted his whole life to music and art. He has released or been a part of over two dozen recordings over the years. He started as a bass player in the punk scene and switched to acoustic guitar in 1995.
The new songs for this project are driven by infectious melodies that weave around his looped rhythms and straight forward dance-style beats. “I envisioned this album to be like a Ramones record, but with a completely different sound. The songs are short, fun, and to the point with acoustic guitar melodies as the sonic focus. For live performances I loop guitar rhythms and a pounding kick drum with scratch guitar sounds. For the album I wanted to have that similar feel so I programmed beats and played acoustic percussion to complement the melodies and recreate that live energy."
This crowd funding platform will fund the new songs into existence. You can pre-order the CD and combine it with other cool rewards (some of which are exclusive to this Kickstarter!) and be the first to get it. The euphoric instrumentals you’ve been hearing over the past year at shows around the US and in Europe will be on this CD!

BACKGROUND: In the eighties and nineties, Helland was a bass playing punk and founding member of the bombastic Western MA hardcore bands Deep Wound, (which included Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis and Lou Barlow,) and Outpatients (with his brother Vis Helland). Both bands released critically acclaimed underground recordings that still sell today to punk record collectors and aficionados of the hardcore music scene here in the U.S, Asia and Europe. Both bands were chronicled in the books 'American Hardcore; A Tribal History', 'Choosing Death; The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grind Core' and 'F***ed Up and Photocopied; Art of the Punk Movement.' Deep Wound is also listed in the 'Encyclopedia of Punk' and their music is in the Drew Stone film, 'All Ages' about the Boston hardcore punk scene.
Throughout his career Helland has recorded and released over 25 records with various bands and projects including the aforementioned Deep Wound and Outpatients, School of Violence, Darkside NYC, Mark Mulcahy, Stephen Rand and Ware River Club. He released 7 solo CDs from 1996 to 2005 and 7 CDs with his current duo project, Frenchy and the Punk. To date Frenchy and the Punk has performed nearly 1000 shows in the U.S. and Europe. He also put out a solo 'best' compilation in 2016 and published, 'Feast', a book of his artwork in 2015.

PROJECT EXPENSES: The $6000 goal will help pay for the majority of the recording, mixing and mastering of the record and production of the CDs, plus the cost of the rewards that go with the campaign, i.e: printing of the shirts, flash drives, art prints, tea towel printing etc, plus all the packing and mailing expenses (postage, envelopes, bubble wrap, tape, it all adds up) so you can get your goodies safe and sound! Also a portion of the kickstarter pledge goes to Kickstarter processing fees. Any overages will help in making a video and promotional costs. Vinyl? That would be great, but that's super expensive so we'll talk about that later!
Here is an approximate cost of this project:
- Recording, Mixing, Mastering - $3900
- CD Production, Digital Distribution - $1400
- Production of Rewards - $500
- Mailing - $400
- Kickstarter Fees - $600
- Promotion - $1000
- Total - $7800
RISK AND CHALLENGES: The record is nearing being finished (and sounding beautiful) so there aren't any challenges in that department. The only problem is if the project doesn't meet the goal, it will never happen and I will be infinitely sad and so will the people who want this music.
***All the Art and Sewing for the rewards is done at the Batfrog Factory Warehome of Scott Helland and Samantha Stephenson!***

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THIS KICKSTARTER! I can't do this without You!
All the thanks, all the love!
Yours, Scott Helland
