About

What is the KICKSTARTER DOCUMENTARY?

(What we want to do)

We want to spend a year travelling the country (globe even?) producing, interviewing, shooting, editing, and promoting a documentary about....you guessed it - KICKSTARTER!

The website IS THE STORY we want to tell! The tale of a truly independent funding platform for indie artists, by indie artists, that so perfectly defines the trending movement and entrepreneurial spirit of the generation.

The Basics...

The film will delve into the world of internet-based "CROWD FUNDING." The pros, the cons, the success stories, and the pitfalls of less than reputable sites. It would be part exposition piece and part road journal about mine and my Award Winning Documentarian co-producer Adam Cadena's journey across the heartland of America.

We want to interview the creators of the website. We want to find out what started it all, firsthand. We would like to speak with the artists / musicians / inventors / and entrepreneurs who have benefitted so greatly from this dot-com of perpetual altruistic, artistic enablement! We want to  capture other Kickstarter's stories, all while living out, and documenting our very own story. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way. This story must be spread! The machine must be fed!

This documentary will feature music by musicians who produced albums with Kickstarter revenue, clips of films produced using Kickstarter, art on location by artists enabled by Kickstarter! And all the backstory to go along with it! Anything and everything Kickstarter related, encapsulated in this introspective, retrospective, prospective, all encompassing Kickstarter Doc! (*Some of you may be considering the logistics here - how do we know that we can pull these guest appearances off? The question to ask is: What Kickstarter patron wouldn't get behind being a part of this and promote the site!? Right?

****Also, just to be clear - We have NO AFFILIATION with Kickstarter aside from being HUGE fans of what the site is engineered to do. We are Kickstarter obsessed!****

How We plan to do it...

The production would take place over approximately 9-10 months. 2 months of pre production, itinerary planning, and scheduling. 4 months of travel, interviews, and follow-ups. 3 months of editing. Hopefully followed by a never ending circuit screenings, festival submissions, DVD release and distribution negotiations, etcetera.

Our collection of high-end HD production gear fits in a few small suitcases suitcases: Laptops, DSLR camera setups, microphones, Hard drives, LED lights...it's all compact. Jump on the plane, train, or automobile, hit the road, meet the Kickstarters, and start rolling footage...

Questions We want to ask: How did Kickstarter begin? How did succssful Kickstarters hear about the site and what inspired them to submit for pledges? What is the origin of "crowd funding?" Was there a moment during the fund raising process where successful Kickstarters they didn't think they'd make their goal? I want to interview those who came very close to their goal, but did not make it as well. Are people skeptical of the site at first? How has their life changed after their projects were succssfully Kickstarted? What came of their Kickstarted creations? Can you download the finished album of music they created online, or purchase their new I-pod watch at the Apple store? So many questions, so many creations, let's get this thing Kickstarted already!

Can you dig it?! It's very meta. A paradox, even. A Kickstarter posts a project on Kickstarter, about Kickstarter, funded by Kickstarters, that wouldn't be possible without Kickstarter. We are creating a positive feedback loop!

What's the Money for?

Gas. Air fare. Food. Water. Lodging. Vehicle wear and tear. Xerox copies. Shooting Permits (if necessary).  Road expenses. Some minor additional Audio Video gear and hard drives to back-up the footage. Festival screeners. Bills. And most importantly, to BUY TIME to make this dream a reality. Time to take off work at the day job. Time to dedicate 100% of efforts and energies to this endeavor for the year. To be straightforward, the money is for many things, but ultimately it's to help Kickstart this year long documentary and these filmmaker's careers!

*DOWN THE ROAD (A Pledge to Pledge): If this project launches, and especially if the financial proceeds go into the black after all is said and done with the distribution arrangements, I PLEDGE TO PLEDGE finances back into other Kickstarter projects. It's simple to me. Pay it forward....feed the machine.
