What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

ImmerseMe is the ultimate language learning tool for students, holiday and business travellers.

ImmerseMe uses virtual reality (VR) to simulate everyday conversations in foreign languages.

ImmerseMe is the prodigal lovechild between immersive technology (VR) and the ideal way to learn a language: immersion.

We're hoping to smash our goal of NZ$15,000 so that we can invest everything into content and development to build the world's first VR-based language learning tool!

To learn more about the vision behind ImmerseMe, check out this original 360° spoken word poem by founder Scott Cardwell.

We need 3 things from this Kickstarter campaign:

  • #1 - Your financial support. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated, choose a reward level on the right hand side. Pledges of $50 or more will guarantee a lifetime licence to ImmerseMe and will help us complete a successful World Tour to film footage for 10 languages (English, French, Spanish, Dutch, German, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian) over the next 3 months. Every dollar pledged will go towards creating beautiful, authentic content, and development costs. In return, you'll be one of the first in the world to use ImmerseMe when it's launched on 1 April 2017!
  • #2 - Suggestions for places to film - if you know someone who owns a bakery, cafe, bar, restaurant, museum, train station, bus station, supermarket, school or backpacker in London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Berlin, Rome, Athens, Beijing, Tokyo or Bali then please send them our Location Application Form - http://immerseme.co/filming-location-application
  • #3 - A homestay family in each city of the World Tour - if you know a family living in London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Berlin, Rome, Athens, Beijing, Tokyo or Bali with high school-aged children (or child) then please send them our Homestay Application Form - http://immerseme.co/homestay-application

What kind of content are we making?

Languages - English, French, Spanish, Dutch, German, Italian, Greek, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese and Indonesian

Holiday travellers - we'll have dozens of everyday conversations for things like buying a loaf of bread from a bakery, ordering a meal at a restaurant, buying tickets to a museum, greeting a stranger and checking into a hotel etc. It's all practical language that's useful no matter how short your trip to the country is!

Students - in addition to the holiday travel content we'll also film interviews on a 2D cinematic camera with families and business owners to hear their stories. We'll create a range of exercises based on this footage for teachers to use in class, as homework or for assessment. It will be filmed in the target language and cut to look AMAZING. This means ImmerseMe will not only provide a revolutionary way to practice simple conversations but will also extend students' understanding of language and culture for entire lessons. We'll cover topics such as daily life, family, food, entertainment, travel, health, fitness, school, work, religion and ambition.

Business travellers - in addition to the holiday travel content we'll create tailored business scenarios to help learn formal ways of introducing yourself, presenting a business card, receiving a gift politely, how to sense when the mood has changed positively/negatively etc. It can be incredibly important knowing how to 'read the room' when language and culture are very different around the world. With VR, we can simulate a meeting and give business travellers a chance to identify subtle cultural cues. There are ways to make a GREAT impression in the first 30 seconds of a business meeting and, alternatively, there are ways to ruin any previous effort. It might simply come down to a misjudged hug. In some cultures that is a big no-no. How much is 'getting it right' worth to your business?

Can you try a prototype?

YES! By clicking the following link from a laptop or PC in a Google Chrome browser: https://my.immerseme.co/ (not mobile compatible...yet)

Keep in mind this is alpha version 1.0 which isn't mobile compatible or optimised for user experience. It's a rough and ready demonstration that the technology works (360 video combined with vocal recognition) so over time we'll make it prettier, faster and more intuitive.

The plan is to make the product truly immersive, apart from the interface which users will be able to set in their language so they can read buttons and instructions prior to starting a scenario. It means there will be no translations available in the actual language learning content itself, only target language cues and pictorial explanations. This presents a unique content creation challenge which will involve a lot of creativity on our part to produce universally recognised diagrams/pictures to help users understand what question(s) they are being asked.

The benefit of building a truly immersive product makes it globally consumable. So whether you come from Korea or Cambodia, you'll still be able to learn Chinese, for example.

Globally consumable products are also globally scalable so we hope to create content for dozens of languages within the next few years and help everyone in the world learn to communicate with each other.

Compatibility goals

Our goal is to have ImmerseMe compatible with mobiles, tablets and PCs by 1 April 2017. This means it should also work on Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear.

We hope to have ImmerseMe running on hardware like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive by the end of 2017.

As with everything, we would rather under promise and over deliver on these expectations.

Who's on the team?

  • Scott Cardwell - CEO and Founder, New Zealand (scott@immerseme.co)

Scott Cardwell has spent 10 years working in online languages education.

Graduating from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2009, Scott joined the team at Language Perfect full-time in January 2010 after being one of the founding staff in their incubation stage from mid 2007.

Scott was instrumental in establishing Language Perfect (now called Education Perfect) as a global leader for online language learning which had over 250,000 annual subscribers and 1000+ schools using the program when he left in April 2015.

After spending 6 months travelling around Europe and using his language skills in real life, Scott realised there was a better way to learn the practical language skills needed for travelling - VR!

Scott has spent 12 months developing a prototype called ImmerseMe and is now ready to start filming 360° footage around the world.

Join Scott on his journey to educate, innovate and create a sustainable future!

Tim comes to the project with 10 years film industry experience. Tim studied a Bachelor of Arts in Screen and Media at Waikato University with a stint at the University of California.

Tim has been the assistant to American producer Rob Tapert on big budget films including Sparticus and Ash vs Evil Dead.

Tim was nominated for Best Short Film and Best Script at the NZ Film Awards 2015.

Scott would like to add that Tim did not shoot or edit the Kickstarter Campaign video, as he was busy wrapping up other work before joining the ImmerseMe World Tour. Scott used his limited editing skills for the campaign video!

Kate spent a semester abroad in Ferrara, Italy in 2006 and has led student groups in Italy in 2013. More recently, she completed an intensive Japanese course prior to a 2 week stint in Minokamo as a chaperone. Her language learning wishlist includes Polish, Russian and Arabic. Kate is currently on maternity leave and is raising her baby bilingually.

Kate will be managing the accuracy of the ImmerseMe content and is arranging for native speakers to create scripts for each language.

Risks and challenges

Risk of opportunity foregone in getting a product to market. Any money made over and above the NZ$15,000 will be put directly towards the development of content and software to create a great product. Scott has years of experience selling to schools with strong relationships already. His passion for the product and connections to travel agencies is also a big strength.

Risk of competitor response. Speed to market is crucial and being the first to create VR-based content will give us a major head start. Getting distribution partners like travel agencies and schools signed up on 3-5 year exclusive contracts is essential. Scott has experience with these negotiations.
