SCORPION DAGGER//James Kerr
No longer just an internet phenomenon, Scorpion Dagger is soon to be coming out with a beautifully bound, hand-crafted Art Book via Anteism Publishing (but only with your support).
These renaissance mashups will be finely printed and bound, with in-depth texts and new Scorpion Dagger artworks. Additional content will be viewable with Augmented Reality media, showing select bizzarro GIF animations.
To read more about Artist James Kerr and this book, please read our interview with Vice's Creators Project here.
Thanks to our augmented reality media partner Metaio, readers will be able to view the added digital content with the use of a tablet, smartphone or wearable device.
Why Back this project on Kickstarter?
As a project backer, you will be kept up to date on the innovative and exciting process of producing this work - you will learn the ins and outs of traditional book making, from printing to binding and more, as well as witness the innovation and creation of new publishing techniques in the burgeoning field of Augmented Reality!
Last, but not least, you are eligible through your support for a host of great rewards including, at certain levels, a finished, first edition copy of the book, which is as much a work of art in and of itself as it is a catalogue of Kerr’s artworks.
What is Anteism?
Anteism is a small Canadian publishing company, established in 2003, which works closely with artists to produce and publish seamless hand-made artist books. To learn more about Anteism please click here.
James Kerr on working with Anteism:
"I've been toying with the idea of putting a book together for a while, but couldn't really think of a fun and interesting way of presenting one. Literally a couple days after downloading some book making app, out of nowhere, I got word that Anteism were interested in making a book with me and that they wanted to do it with some Augmented Reality - - I kinda freaked. They make such nice books, and at about the 10 second mark of our first meeting, I was in."
What is an Augmented Book?
Like the best art books on your shelf, Scorpion Dagger will be a great read with fine reproductions and in-depth texts on the artist's work. Many of the 100+ colour pages will also use an Augmented Reality media to transform the printed image to an animation viewable through a custom app and phone or tablet.
Augmented reality is changing how we use print media!
As a method to fuse the gap between digital artists and the print and publishing industry, augmented print is a true innovation to the changing face of art books, and opens up possibilities we would like to showcase in Scorpion Dagger.
is in its early stages as a media, and supporters are helping
shape the future of the medium by showcasing what can be done.
Thanks to METAIO and our KICKSTARTER backers, we will be able to make this book happen!

Renaissance Paintings Make for Hilarious (Kiiinda Sacrilegious) GIF Mashups , Margaret Rhodes, Wired Magazine, 08.01.14
"In an act of da Vinci-esque brilliance,
Montreal-based illustrator has combined the mastery of early
Renaissance paintings with the comic stylings of a Mike Judge television
show. His site “Scorpion Dagger” features GIFs of beer-chugging
priests, crowd-surfing disciples, and Jesus with a jetpack." -

"A clever way to make fun of the renaissance and to incorporate it in our contemporary world." Lodown Magazine
"Too funny for words, we love these high-larious GIFs by the wicked Scorpion Dagger." Juxtapoz

Risks and challenges
Successful integration of the AR technology at hand is our focus with this book. Properly presenting the work the way we envision requires development new to both artist and publisher, and poses the biggest challenge in terms of meeting our proposed timeline.
Previously, we were faced with extensive costs for development of our augmented reality media; with support from Metaio, we are now able to lower our budget substantially and offer our rewards at more affordable prices.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
