Growing Up with Scoliosis
Hi, I'm Michelle Spray. I originally wrote and self-published my first book Growing Up with Scoliosis in 2002. It's about my journey growing up with a progressive curvature of the spine called scoliosis (sko-lee-o-sis).
I single-handedly sold 1,000 copies in my first year.
Selling through another 3,000 books on my own, I subsequently lost my grandmother (who I dedicated the book to), got married, had two children, got divorced and unfortunately, my book and my publishing company fell by the wayside.
So why Kickstarter?
A good friend told me about Kickstarter and it has opened up a world of opportunity for me that I didn't think would be possible right now. I CAN revive my scoliosis book (with your help) and continue to help countless scoliosis patients around the world realize they are not alone by reading my story, my journey, my experiences, my emotions.
I owe it to them and to myself.
With your donations, I can:
• purchase a new ISBN number
• print the revised and improved version of the book
• advertise and market
• run the back-end of my publishing company
• research new orthopedic leads
• create an AUDIO version of the book
• create an e-book version for e-readers on the Kindle, Nook and iPad
• help maintain awareness for scoliosis research
• AND most importantly, help scoliosis patients and their families world-wide realize THEY ARE NOT ALONE in this journey.
Risks and challenges
I am 100% confident that I will complete this project once funded in a very short time-frame. I am very motivated to make this book available in print as well as all of the latest formats such as the audio book, and eBook platforms for Kindle, Nook and iPad. This book is a labor of love ... It is my life's story and I’d love to continue to share it with young adults who are faced with the same challenges.
I have carefully considered the amount of time and money it will take to reach my goals, so I know that I will meet them. That is not to say there could be a road bump or two along the way - most projects run into a challenge here and there. A couple of the challenges that I face are:
-Digital eBook conversion: I want to be sure that this book can be enjoyed on all of the popular readers and tablet devices. To ensure this, I will be working close with experts on conversion and will fully test it on all platforms.
-Audio Book conversion: I have the equipment necessary to make this happen, but will need to outsource an editor to put the audio together in one fluid and very professional-sounding audio file.
-Distribution: Ultimately I want to see this book back on the shelves of major book stores as well as online book sellers. I want to get the eBook versions on the popular sites like iBookstore, Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and more. I also want to be sure the audio book version is on iTunes, Audible.com and Google Play.
It is important to me that my supporters know how the project is progressing, so I will have regular updates to show what I have accomplished. My first big challenge is raising the money to really get this project off the ground. I sincerely hope that you will join me!
With Kickstarter it’s all or nothing! If I don't reach my goal, then nothing happens and no money is exchanged. If I do reach my goal, then you can be proud to be a part of something that is sure to change many lives.
Your contribution, however small, will be greatly appreciated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
