We've climaxed! Help us stretch our goal and stuff our funding with $14,000.
Every cent will help advance a shame-free sex education for everyone.
In America, 49 out of 50 states do not require medically accurate, comprehensive sex education. Introducing A Sexplanation...
A Sexplanation is a feature-length documentary that will strip down human sexuality from the biological to the sociological, starting with the premise that pleasure is a crucial component to well-being. The goals:
- Expose what scientists and educators really know about sex.
- Explain how outdated cultural values and sexual shame get in the way of healthy sex.
- Profile solutions that could make us healthier, happier, and sexier.
- Show the issue of sex education and how we do it in a fun, entertaining, engaging way!
What is sex?
It’s a deceptively simple question, but one that can be hard to answer. Sex is body, and sex is mind. It's physical, emotional, social, political and spiritual. Sex changes the way we think; our consciousness transforms.
Thus, the first step to a comprehensive sex education is trying to define what it means to be a sexual being.
But more than providing any specific answers, the film is about giving people better frameworks to ask better questions. By speaking to educators, biologists, neurologists, sociologists, spiritual thinkers and more, A Sexplanation aims to provide the language and concepts necessary so we can have a more grounded, evidence-based conversation on what constitutes a healthy sexuality.
Telling Our Story
A Sexplanation is Cosmos meets The Joy of Sex. It’s a science film that explores the outer reaches of our inner universe, combing the depths of our bodies and minds in six chapters. It tries to answer the question, “What is sex?” with each section peeling back a deeper understanding of what it means to be a sexual being. While taking the science seriously, the visual and narrative tone will radiate cheer and a little camp. It’s NOVA After Dark.
Through a world of intimate character-based stories, we’ll illuminate the science behind sex and build an evidence-based foundation on which to make informed sexual opinions and choices. We'll see how these pioneers fight through societal obstacles to their work to build a sexual culture that reflects who we actually are as human beings. Story by story, each section will lead to the next, piecing together a broader, deeper, stronger comprehension of sex.
Who is Making It? Meet Alex Liu
Frustrated with sex education, Alex Liu took to YouTube to start doing the job himself. Since 2012, he's created over 30 videos on sexual health related issues for his YouTube channel The Science of Sin. By combining science, sketch comedy, and a little skin, Alex has amassed an audience of over 11,000 followers. Slate recently named Science of Sin as one of its "Brilliant Ideas To Fix Science Education”. Prior to this Alex studied molecular toxicology at UC Berkeley and worked at Genentech, before plunging into journalism school at New York University's Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP). Since then he's reported health and science news at NOVA scienceNOW, CNN Health, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and San Francisco NPR station KQED.

How We Will Spend What We Raise on Kickstarter
A Sexplanation is an ambitious project, produced to a very tight schedule by an exceptionally talented team. Not a penny of our budget will be wasted. There's all kinds of costs required in making this type of documentary. There's the cost of the crew (editorial, production, location and post-production), equipment hire, transport, graphics and animation, archive footage, music licensing and much, much, more. And on top of that there's perk fulfilment, the 5% Kickstarter platform fee and a 3% card processing fee. $7,000 is the absolute minimum we need to continue making A Sexplanation happen. However, we're an ambitious lot. The more money we raise, the more we can invest in producing and promoting the documentary. Beyond our $7,000 target we have produced stretch goals, allotting up to a further $7,000 of Kickstarter contributions. Activities to be funded include: - A greater use of use of graphics, animations and skits to bring issues in the film vividly alive.
Risks and challenges
The good news is that we have completed almost 60% of the principle photography and now only have 6 more shooting days left to get us over the finishing line.
Once we finish we will still have 2 more months of post-production work to complete including the primary edit, scoring, sound design, foley, animation and final mastering. That's certainly a lot to do!
We have used the time in between filming to reach out to our stakeholders, fans and broader network to attract committed and talented people to help us navigate the last part of production.
To date we have established a strong editorial team, recruited artists to assist with the graphics and on screen animation, and commissioned the music composition.
After 2 years of working on and off the production our A Sexplanation family have grown together and know very keenly what common issues and challenges await us. This certainly helps when you have limited time and resources.
As we swing into June 2016, we are excited to take on the forthcoming challenges of completing the film and starting the final path down to having an exceptionally relevant and impactful documentary to share with you all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
