What is this book?
Empires of EVE: A History of the Great Wars of EVE Online Volume II is a non-fiction chronicle of the incredible history of EVE Online from the years 2009-2016, and is a standalone sequel to the events of Volume I.
Readers do not need to be EVE players to enjoy the story, and do not need to have read the first book in the series.
Volume II will give readers a full and concise crash course on both the history and gameplay of EVE Online, and is designed from the first page to be fully welcoming to both new and returning readers regardless of their level of knowledge of EVE.
The historical narrative takes place during EVE Online’s most popular and populous era so far. Volume II will chart the rising and falling fortunes of massive and often devious alliances of thousands of players, introduce all-new iconic characters, and investigate the climactic battles that have come to define this era of EVE Online like the Supercap Slaughter at Uemon, the last stand of TEST at 6VDT-H, and the $300,000 Bloodbath at B-R5RB.
Volume II will pick up immediately after the calamitous conclusion of the first book, as the EVE universe was reeling from the sudden collapse of its oldest empire, Band of Brothers. In place of mighty BoB, a power vacuum formed that set in motion the next great era of EVE Online as new alliances were built to shape the future of the game.
Having destroyed their blood rivals, the Goonswarm Federation faced a new challenge: figuring out what to do to stave off boredom now that their great enemy was dead. Tens of thousands of pilots had been rallied to join EVE Online to participate in the destruction of Band of Brothers' empire, and without a goal that could keep those legions united, Goonswarm began to implode.
To make matters worse, its own leader had come to believe Goonswarm was rotting from within and was planning to dissolve the alliance and rob its savings account before heading off to vacation in Mexico.
Meanwhile, the Russians began retreating en masse into the privacy of the Drone Regions where they would begin construction on a secret project to bring New Eden to its knees.
Volume II will follow the implosion and second rise of Goonswarm, the fall of the old Northern Coalition, the evolution of the Russian powerbloc the "Drone Russian Federation," the introduction of new powers like Pandemic Legion and TEST Alliance Please Ignore, and much much more.
It's a story of politics and fascinating global sociology punctuated by climactic space battles and bizarre twists that could only happen in a story that takes place on our own modern internet.
Empires of EVE: Volume I was funded on Kickstarter with more than seven times its original goal, and was successfully delivered to backers in January 2016. It's available on Amazon now if you'd like to check it out before you back Volume II.
Empires of EVE is professionally designed and is thoughtfully laid out to make the reading experience as easy and interesting as possible. That includes full-page oil paintings of famous EVE leaders, as well as real propaganda posters that were used by EVE factions.
The book is printed on high quality art paper, and is constructed to be a beautiful object that you'll be able to return to for many years.
The inside of the cover features an original illustration of the map of EVE Online created by fine artist Andrew Ghrist.
My name is Andrew Groen, and I've been a writer covering video games for over ten years. In the past, I wrote for outlets like WIRED, PC Gamer, and Ars Technica, and my work has been profiled in The Atlantic and The Verge.
In 2014, my first Kickstarter campaign became a runaway success. Twenty months later, Empires of EVE: A History of the Great Wars of EVE Online released to wide backer approval and has gone on to sell more than 15,000 copies worldwide and counting.
My job is to investigate and faithfully re-tell the amazing narrative that has been unfolding within EVE Online so it can be enjoyed by the entire games community.
I have never had any biases or allegiances to any alliance, corporation, or group within EVE. I'm also not affiliated with CCP Games, but I have official permission to publish this book and use the EVE Online IP.
Why am I writing this?
First and foremost I'm writing this because it's an amazing story that deserves to be told in an accessible way. I'm also writing this because this history has never been written down before.
As time moves on, key players and memories of this universe have started to fade, and we risk losing the history of one of gaming's most unique communities who inhabit one of humanity's first true virtual worlds.
As much as I want this to be a great book for people to enjoy today, I also want it to serve as a time capsule for future generations to understand what life was like in one of the first virtual worlds.
I'm writing this because there is simply no way for people to learn the history of Eve, and it's getting more difficult every day. You can spend weeks reading through the Eve wikis, but they are largely incomplete, filled with jargon, and often written by people who are obviously writing a slanted, one-sided version of history.
In EVE, as in the real world, history is written by the winner, and winners make terrible historians.
Risks and challenges
Having already produced one volume of this series through Kickstarter, I have already encountered most of the difficulties and challenges of producing a book like this.
That said, when producing history based on more modern events there is always a risk that the subjects of the story will attempt to manipulate the reporting of the events for their own advantage. I work very hard to limit the effect of this problem by relentlessly cross-referencing source accounts with hard data and by allowing their opponents (as well as neutral sources) the opportunity to dispute everything that is ultimately printed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
