About this project
I'm Schuyler Towne, a competitive lockpicker. I have been competing for about 5 years, but didn't really get anywhere until I started buying hand made tools from friends around the country and around the world. After getting accustomed to my custom tools, I couldn't find what I like commercially.
To rectify that I have designed my own line of tools meant for mass production. While you'll find different pick types than you can find commercially, more important is the care that went into the design of each of them. I wanted my picks to feel good in your hand, better than the popsicle-stick handles that rule the marketplace today. I wanted them to look good to and have created a more organic shape to the handle that shows off another unique feature of some of my picks, an undercut.
The undercut is a small curve toward the handle of the pick that, when a pin sets, transmits the feeling more dramatically than traditional straight-handles. However! Sometimes you need the firmness of a straight handle, so I have both in the collection.
It's important to note 2 things. 1: Lockpicking isn't illegal. In fact, there is a vibrant Locksport community. We have been covered positively in the Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, All Things Considered, Here and Now and many other places. I even recently consulted for a show on the History Channel and many of our community members consult with law enforcement and advance the security of locks all around the world. There are some states that restrict the use of picks in public, but I'll detail what you need to know and they are the rare exception, not the rule! 2: It IS illegal to send lockpicks through the USPS so I will be using whichever 3rd party shipping service offers the best rates.
I'm running this as a pre-sale to get the company started. The money you provide will net you the first run of these awesome tools and the profits will roll right back into the company allowing it to be self sustaining.
I'm updating the project at least once a week, more often twice a week with progress reports, stories, lockpicking demonstrations and answers to your questions! I'm trying to do the best I can to make these updates a real value-add.
Thanks so much for even checking the project out, and if you choose to pledge? You are wonderful beyond words!
