About

Christmas of 2009 saw me driving out to Phoenix, Arizona to visit friends, because plane tickets were simply too expensive to go home. I had lost a job earlier in the year, and was lucky enough to find a new one a few months later, but my financial situation became tighter, so it seemed like a great idea to NOT go home, and instead visit friends that I had not seen for some time.

While I was there, I soaked in the endless natural beauty of the city, and its outlying mountains, and the community my friends lived in. It was a small neighborhood of World War 2 era houses, an area that had, until just recently, been left in disrepair by decades of neglect. The neighborhood was on an upswing, populated by a small, but incredibly dedicated group of working class tenants, until the nation's housing market collapsed. As the crisis continued, and Phoenix ended up being one of the cities hardest hit, my friends (and their friends) saw the loss of hours at work, or flat out lost their jobs completely. Some of them lost their homes and businesses.

For all of this turmoil, though, this little neighborhood of people has pulled together to try and help each other and support the community they've built. I was incredibly inspired by this, and came home with a plan to write a script. The script is finished, and now I'd like to bring the inspirational story of this community, and my friends in particular to life.

My plan is to shoot the film in Phoenix in June. My goal is to capture the magic of the neighborhood that my friends live in, the independent business's that surround and support them, and the struggles that they face as working class Americans going through one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression.
