' is a photographic series that deals with the concept of an audience at an event with music becoming one unified body, not only in a formalist sense, but as a seemingly random collection of people unified by one event: sound, a measurable form of energy. Live music is a powerful force to me, and every concert experience I've had has a sort of ritualistic quality like an ancient tribal practice; there is something primal about dancing, contemporary dance music even has the same bpm (beats per minute) as tribal music from varying cultures and time periods. The release of endorphins and the adrenaline, the crowd swarming as one mass all build up to what I would loosely consider a mob mentality.
is in short about allowing oneself to be enveloped into a group and become a small portion of the
that is the 'crowd'.
I have been invited to stay with a local DJ free of charge for two weeks in New York City from the 9th to the 24th of April. I will be spending my time in the city documenting and discovering varying groups and cultures of people who unite through the experience of dancing. I intend on focusing not only on 'night-life' culture but other possible avenues such as churches, weddings, and dance-teams to name a few. My main need for funding is travel to and from as well as in New York City, chemicals and rental of equipment while I produce the final images in Kansas City, as well as framing of the prints. The exhibition date of these images will be tentatively dependent on securing a gallery, however, the images size will be 11.5" x 6.5", framed they will be 15.5" x 11".
