An excerpt of Psychic Temple's opening track here.
In late 2008 I was hearing a new kind of music in my head. I searched for this music in the work of other artists but I couldn't find what I wanted. On January 5th, 2009, I went into the recording studio with drummers Andrew Pompey and Justice Constantine with an idea of this music and the emotional space I wanted it to create. Over the following 19 months, I collaborated with twenty-eight musicians (including four bassists, six vocalists, two horn sections, and one string quartet) to build that space.
I wanted to hear music that possessed the rich textures of folk, jazz, and modern classical music with the rhythmic pulse of microhouse. I wanted something beautiful and easy to listen to. Something that would transport me from the noise and stress of the city to another place entirely. After almost two years and over 1000 hours of work, I present to you, Psychic Temple.
I composed, recorded and produced Psychic Temple in between truck driving, being a plumber's assistant, composing for short films, high school music teaching, and being a husband to my wife, Adriana, and father to my beautiful children, Naima and Elisha. I am deeply grateful to my family and everyone at Asthmatic Kitty for supporting and championing this project, especially in these difficult financial times.
I am humbled to have with some of the best musicians on the planet playing on Psychic Temple. The ensemble includes Mick Rossi of the Philip Glass Ensemble, legendary Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, vocalists Julianna Barwick, Joel St. Julien (of ELLUL), Aaron Roche and DM Stith, trumpeter Kris Tiner, guitarist Danny Miller and drummer Tabor Allen (of Rare Grooves and The Widow Babies), Brian Blade Fellowship pedal steel guitarist Dave Easley, Weird Weeds percussionist Nick Hennies, bassists Steuart Liebig, C.J. Boyd and Anthony Shadduck, and extraordinary brass and reed players Danny T. Levin and David Moyer. Horn and string arrangements were written by Corbin Foster and Seth Shafer.
Poster designer Jason Munn is a long time friend and collaborator. He designed the artwork for my experimental guitar album ideas without numbers and the logo for my record label, Sounds Are Active. He is a graphic artist of impeccable skill and taste. A 192-page coffee table book of his concert posters (Death Cab For Cutie, Sufjan Stevens, Mountain Goats, etc.) was recently published by Chronicle Books.
Cover photographer Ian Souter and I worked for months discussing ideas and scouting locations. We drove down La Cienega into darkness, ate french fries in old diners and took pictures in pitch black darkness. Eventually, we gathered as many of the musicians on Psychic Temple as we could, bought a dove, and shot the album cover on film.
Artist and musician Elis Im brought twig to ink and mouse to pixel in creating the Psychic Temple album design. She has formed a unique whole that incorporates large blooms of colour, liner notes from jazz historian Todd S. Jenkins, Ian's photography, and the adapted icons of Danny Miller. A massive visual project pulled off with grace and true artistry.
