About

Illawarra On Pointe Productions (IOP) seeks to present Scheherazade at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, Nowra in October 2019.

Our vision for this project is to present a unique ballet experience for the community that offers countless opportunities and experiences for individuals and the wider community in a state of the art theatre.

IOP is seeking pledges for ticket purchases that will ensure that the project has enough support and audience members to reach the minimum cost of production. With enough pledges the ballet will be staged at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre on Saturday 12 October 2019 for two performances at 11am and 3pm. If additional funds are raised IOP will consider presenting a third performance.

You can pledge tickets for either performances at 11am or 3pm on Saturday 12 October 2019 at discounted rates. Once the pledge is completed ticket prices will move to $50 per adult, $45 concession plus additional booking fees (roughly $7) and handling fees.

  • Pledging single tickets rewards you with concession prices: $45 per ticket
  • Pledging 5 tickets rewards you with a reduced rate: $43 per ticket
  • Pledging 10 tickets rewards you with a further reduced rate: $40 per ticket
  • You can also pledge $20 for those who wish to support us but are unable to attend or would like to contribute more.

The Ballet

Scheherazade is loosely based on the stories of One Thousand and One Nights. When a young princess is captured by a wicked Sultan she cleverly spins enchanted stories through dance to stave off execution.

Rimsky-Korsakov's magically evocative symphonic score accompanies this unique ballet adaptation. It features the Illawarra's leading dancers, On Pointe's full symphonic orchestra and mentored emerging musicians and production crew. This ballet production will involve roughly one hundred performers, offer countless opportunities for individuals, a special experience for the wider community and help continue the development of the appreciation for symphonic ballet performances and theatrical ventures along the South Coast.

It runs a mentor program for aspiring musicians to play alongside professional musicians and runs regional school tours educating school students about orchestral instruments and the limitless possibilities of music. Recent IOP credits include

  •  Sleeping Beauty: A Choose Your Own Adventure Orchestra Story (Nowra School of Arts 2018)

Why the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre?

The Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre (SEC) boasts a beautifully large theatre. Built in 2008 it is considered one of the most innovative venues in Australia. The proposed ballet would take place in the one thousand seat auditorium that offers dancers a large stage to perform on, an acoustically friendly pit for a symphony orchestra and technical specifics needed to host animated projections and stage lighting.

Risks and challenges

The risk of producing a ballet at the SEC is ensuring that the project has enough support and audience members to reach the minimum cost of production. With a state of the art venue, orchestra payment and additional production costs the ballet runs the risk of running at a loss if not well attended. With IOP's track record of a sold out season of Peter Pan (2018) and well attended The Nutcracker (2016) it's our hope that we can retain these good audience numbers
